Crash on Startup

Post by LogicalMeans »

Hello Matrix Forums,

I recently purchased Forge of Freedom after scouring the lands for an immersive Civil War experience.
It seemed like a winner!

Until I started it.
The intro videos play, the initial loading screen comes on, but then, just as the front loading completes, the game closes. Nothing explosive, it just vanishes.
I have attempted every reasonable option to fix this, including:

Updating Flash Player
Reinstalling/Repatching
Changing Compatibility settings
Changing Desktop Resolution
Trying all the 'Sound' to 'NoSound' folder tricks.

Still nothing.
I am running Windows Vista with 3 GB of RAM and one of those atrocious Intel Graphics Cards.

Can anyone help me put an end to this war of Function Aggression?

Not sure why your post was missed. Did you ever get this working?
Michael Jordan plays ball. Charles Manson kills people. I torment eager potential customers by not sharing screenshots of "Brother Against Brother." Everyone has a talent.

I had the same problem today - game crashed after the blue loading bar reached 100%,
the detailed message was "flash.ocx missing".

This is what i did to fix it:
- started internet explorer, browsed to Adobe and downloaded/installed Flash player 11
(make sure to uncheck "McAfee Security Scan Plus" :)
- started explorer and navigated to c.\windows\system32\macromed\flash
- found the ocx-file, mine was named "Flash64_11_3_300_265.ocx"
- made a copy of the file and renamed it to "flash.ocx"
- started FoF and all was ok ...

Hello,

I have a few questions about loading the game.

The first question I have is about loading the game. I bought a laptop last summer & the installing the game seemed to go well. But I have trouble loading the game & eventually the game crashes. Any advice in this area would be helpful.

Also is there a way I can instal this game on Linux?

How about on a mac?

Hope I can get some help.

Thanks,

Nathan

I'm having the same problem as Floyd and LogicalMeans with missing file 'flash.ocx'. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit, so the suggested fix doesn't apply exactly.

1. Main issue is when I download and install the standard Flash11 from Adobe I don't see any .ocx file to rename.
2. I'm looking in the windows\sysWOW64\Macromed\Flash, which is where Adobe installs Flash for 64 bit systems.
3. The Tutorial runs fine, and looks like it's running Macromedia Flash 8. Is there an embedded Flash that comes with the game, or is it not really running Flash?
4. The Readme claims that setting NOFLASH=1 in ForgeOfFreedom.ini will disable the splash screen, which I'm guessing will work around this Flash problem. However, setting NOFLASH=1 or NOFLASH=0 has no effect either way.
5. This is the CD version of the game, not the download.

So it seems like Forge of Freedom does not work with 64 bit Windows. Can you advise? Looks like a fine game.

Are you sure you've installed the plugin for internet explorer?
The 'ocx' file is an ActiveX element. IIRC i've downloaded it with
Internet Explorer to get the correct download (ActiveX version).

Edit: i have downloaded the actual flash player plugin in Internet explorer
and see a 32- and 64-bit version. I've made the copy in the 32-bit folder and renamed
that to 'flash.ocx'. No problem to start the game.
Path is:
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\Flash64_11_7_700_169.ocx
copied and renamed to
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\flash.ocx

Thanks! Using Internet Explorer to download the ActiveX version of Flash, then doing the copy/rename trick described above, fixed the problem.
