TCP/IP FAQ

Post by Erik Rutins »

Hi everyone,

This thread is intended as a TCP/IP play FAQ for those having problems figuring out how to set it up in CoG. This is based on CoG v1.0 and should generally apply to later releases as well.

1. If you do not know how to configure your router or firewall for online play, the best way to start is to read the documentation that came with your router. Usually the best way to get around this is to make sure your Windows Firewall (for Windows XP users) is enabled and then put your computer's internal IP address in the router's DMZ. If your router supports this, the documentation should explain how to do it. Then use the exceptions in Windows Firewall to allow the Crown of Glory executable file to have access through the firewall. The help on Windows Firewall explains how to do this. If you have a different setup, the basic idea is the same - the DMZ takes the router's configuration out of the equation as a problem and allowing the CoG.exe permission to get through the software firewall removes any software firewall issues. Some people have more complicated setups or are on ISPs that simply won't allow games to effectively connect with your computer. In this case, a call to your ISP may help.

2. To get started as the host or the client, launch Crown of Glory and click on "Remote Game". You'll see the pop-up dialog below appear.

4a. If you are the Host. Type your external IP address into the box that appears once you have selected from the pull-down. If it starts in 192.168.0.* or 10.10.10.*, it's not your external IP address and won't be seen by computers on the internet.

You can find out your external IP by going to http://www.mywanip.com/

4b. If you are one of the clients, type the address given to you by the host into the box that appears once you have selected from the pull-down menu.

5. Change your player name to whatever you would like it to be. By default, it chooses your computer's name.

6. To host a game, click on Host.

7. To join a game, click on the name of the game and click Join.

7. You will be brought to the main remote game setup screen. As the host, until players have joined you can't assign nations. Once at least one other player has joined, the host can change the game settings and both the host and clients can click on the flag of the nation they want to play, then click on the row next to their name to move that nation to their control. You can control multiple nations if you like.

Once all players are in, the scenario settings are defined and nations are assigned, click on Ok to start the game.

It will take a while for the game to load initially and there will also be a delay between turns (which should not be as long as the initial loading time. Be patient during the initial loading time. Once the game starts, if you submit your orders before others, you will be brought to an "in between turns" screen that allows you to chat and shows you which nations still have to submit orders.
