build units

I am currently reading the instruction book.
I am new to ageod and am in learning mode.
I am currently reading on how to build units.
I am having a hard time with that.
I can't figure out how to build the units. I click on alt f1( I can't figure out how to get the 3 soldier icon in the upper right hand corner), get the colored areas but am not getting access to building unite.
Could someone please help me on this?
