SRA

The USAAF counterattacks our invading forces on Luzon with escorted B-17 strikes and fighter sweeps. Zeros on CAP destroy 5 B-17D bombers and 4 of their escorting Warhawks but lose six of their number to a P-39D sweep. Interesting to see Encircled bring these aircraft into action here.

Japanese forces capture Batavia on Java. The Allied Far East Command (ABDA) headquarters is destroyed in the process.

Japanese transports dash in towards Koepang and disembark the 2nd and 8th Tank Regiments to reinforce the 146th Infantry Regiment already there. The covering force of Imperial heavy cruisers shield the transports from DD Vendetta and send her to the bottom.

Burma

Port Blair is secured and the Allied garrison destroyed as the weather clears up and allows Japanese bombers to fly in support of the paratroopers.

China

Japanese troops secure the hex across the river to the west of Ankang. Imperial forces are also only one hex away from Sian after successfully conducting a shock attack river crossing and driving back 9 previously battered Chinese units into the city.

South Pacific

Light cruiser Naka and an escorting destroyer inconclusively tangle with a force of Allied cruisers east of New Zealand. Japanese forces on Fiji have been ordered to stand down and recover fatigue/disruption before continuing their efforts to reduce the pesky Kiwi garrison.

Disaster!

CVL Ryujo takes a torpedo from SS KXVIII southeast of Kendari. The light carrier is heavily damaged, on fire, and with the engine compartment partially flooded and will in all likelihood soon sink. Not a good day for the IJN...

The IJN strikes back! I-25 hits CV Yorktown with two torpedoes out of a salvo of six when it sights the flattop to the west of Los Angeles. That's the second American aircraft carrier my submarines have hit since the start of the war less than 30 days ago.

South Pacific

A force of two IJN light cruisers and two destroyers continue to skirmish with a force of Allied heavy and light cruisers east of New Zealand. Unfortunately, none of the long lances strike home and one of the IJN destroyers is heavily damaged. The Japanese also lose a supporting AV ship and its complement of 8 floatplanes when a force of Allied destroyers stumble upon it.

SRA

CVL Ryujo puts out its fires and evades circling Allied submarines! I am trying to contain my optimism but it looks like there is now a real chance that Ryujo might survive. The ship is far from out of the danger zone however....

In Luzon, the USAAF launches fighter sweeps to pave the way for fighter bomber attacks against Japanese transports. The fighter sweeps are roughly handled, with the Americans losing 11 Warhawks/Aerocobras for two Zeros. They did their job however as 7 P-35A fighters slide past the Japanese CAP and sink a valuable Yusen N cargo ship.

Burma

The Japanese drive back the Commonwealth forces once more, this time pushing them across the river into Pegu. It looks like Encircled has ordered the abandonment of Rangoon - the Burma road is about to be cut.

North Pacific

Japanese troops land on Amchitka Island. The Aleutians is being cleared up all the way to Cold Bay.

Central Pacific

Responding to some SIGINT traffic, I positioned I-174 to the south of Christmas Island. The submarine first encounters a patrolling KV Chilliwack but handles the situation well by sending the warship to the bottom.

South Pacific

The KB is fully refuelled, rearmed, and takes its full complement of replacement aircraft at New Caledonia.

A fast transport mission seizes Norfolk Island. Closer to Rabaul, light cruiser Adelaide is sighted by RO-60 and takes a torpedo.

SRA

CVL Ryujo makes it to Ambon! It disembarks its aircraft and begins pier side repair as I rush in Naval Support and repair ships. The big danger now is B-17 raids, as these bombers can reach Ambon from Makassar and Darwin, both of which are in Allied hands. I am particularly worried about Darwin, where the Allies have reinforced with both fighters for CAP and have bombers on the field. Needless to say, I am trying to set up my own dense Zero CAP but B-17Es in particular have a strong chance of punching through.

On Java Merak and Buitenzorg are captured. Oosthaven (Southern Sumatra) and Semarang (Java) are taken by paratroopers.

Five Dutch destroyers race in and bombard Batavia, but cause relatively little damage.

A Japanese Base Force disembarks on and seizes Jolo in order to set up close air support for further invasions in the area.

Burma

I sent several recon missions to Lashio over the past couple of days and figured that Encircled was likely to put up a good CAP there to counter a paratrooper attack. Sure enough, 36 enemy fighters arrived and were up in the air just as I send in my first Oscar sweep. 16 Buffalos are confirmed destroyed for the loss of 3 Oscars (including two to ops). 1 Japanese pilot is KIA.

China

A significant land and air battle rages on one hex to the north of Ankang, where some of my armor has raced ahead across the river to meet a strong Chinese blocking position with plenty of artillery (including the two AT gun regiments). The Japanese armor attacks with significant IJAAF air support to soften up the defenses while waiting for the infantry divisions to catch up, but the Allies respond with their own bombing raids to support the defense. I brought in some Zeros for some long range CAP and on the 5th they shoot down 10 Blenheim IV bombers.

Ground combat at 81,41 (near Ankang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 6364 troops, 0 guns, 965 vehicles, Assault Value = 510

Defending force 23938 troops, 388 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 546

Japanese adjusted assault: 248

Allied adjusted defense: 175

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
Vehicles lost 73 (5 destroyed, 68 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1592 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 81 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 49 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Guns lost 98 (66 destroyed, 32 disabled)

Meanwhile, the Chinese appear to be largely abandoning Sian as Japanese troops surge past its flank. Further significant Japanese offensives in China are about to kick off.

The overall score is now 10332 points for Japan to 10275 points for the Allies. It has taken the Japanese one month to surpass the Allies in victory points.

South Pacific

The Kiwi garrison at Suva finally surrenders and Fiji is conquered by the Empire.

SRA

Vindicator dive bombers stage out of Miri to attack some Japanese heavy cruisers off Kuching. The Vindicators score no hits and lose 4 of their number to flak.

Japanese forces having recovered from their initial shock attack attempt a second attack against the Singapore garrison. Much better result with low casualties sustained and fortifications dropping to 2. The Imperial Guards Division finally arrived at Johore Bahru and is unpacking in order to march into Singapore and join the assault.

China

In China I have kicked off a major offensive to seize the Changsha basin. The objective is to take Changsha and its nearby supply producing bases before the end of the month. As a first step Japanese forces force three Chinese Corps out of Pingsiang and occupy the resource producing base.

I am now spending all my PPs to buy out as much heavy artillery from Manchuria as I can. I will need these units first in China and then eventually elsewhere.

Central Pacific

Japanese forces land on and take Tabiteuea

SRA

All Commonwealth forces in Malaya (not counting Singapore) are neutralized with the surrender of the last remnants at Alor Star. The Japanese forces that were tasked with mopping up operations are ordered towards Singapore to bolster the siege of the fortress.

Djokjakarta is taken, approximately half of Java is now under Japanese control.

China

Once again my paratrooper raid, this time on Paoshan, is foiled when weather grounds my strike aircraft. A 2 to 1 result was insufficient to take the base due to fortification level 1. Sigh, it would have been a big victory to secure this base this early.

North of Ankang, the Japanese roughly handle the Chinese blocking position but a remnant of an artillery regiment is left behind. Once that is dealt with, the Imperial forces will push further northwards.

SRA

On Java, Japanese forces conquer Soerakarta.

China

Kanhsien is taken by the Empire.

A bit of a disaster befell the Japanese today. I had ordered both bombers and fighter sweeps to support the paratroopers at Paoshan. At the same time, I had ordered transport squadrons to fly supply drops there. Unfortunately, weather once again intervened to ground both sweeps and bomber strikes, but the game on the other hand does not prevent transport aircraft or CAP from flying during bad weather  . This unfortunately meant that my transport aircraft flew right into a hornets nest of Allied fighters unsupported. 31 (!) transport aircraft were lost as a result, seriously diminishing the Empire's air transport capability at this early stage of the war.

North Pacific

Contact, enemy sighted!

A Japanese heavy covering force centred on two Ise class battleships that was escorting a reinforcement convoy to Cold Bay stumbled onto a large Allied battlefleet, lead by HMS Warspite, in the middle of the night. I am not entirely sure, but I suspect this Allied fleet may have been heading in for a bombardment of Cold Bay. Both the Japanese and the Allied fleets were unspotted by either side's search the turn before.

In any case, the Japanese found themselves heavily outnumbered but performed admirably as they made best use of their excellent night fighting skills in the dismal weather conditions. Visibility was essentially at 2,000 yards, making this battle a very close in one. Hyuga and Ise riddled Warspite with 36cm shells and delivered powerful punches to CA Minneapolis and CL Honolulu. All three of these warships were to sink today (confirmed by lost floatplanes). The battle lasted for a very long time, and at one moment Hyuga was charging in and riddling the enemy with 25mm gunfire. I was wondering why it wasn't using its bigger guns only to realize after the combat replay that it had already fired off all of its 36cm and 14cm shells!

I have included the CR of the battle below in full.

Yes they are both the initial captains. PPs are still very short so I am not yet able to optimize the captains to exactly my liking but most of them are pretty good to begin with.

Ise's captain is 64 Naval and 72 Aggression and Hyuga's captain is 65 Naval and 68 Aggression.

North Pacific

I lose an empty Aden class cargo ship to torpedo armed PBY floatplanes. I really need air cover here so I am working hard to develop airstrips in the Aleutians.

South Pacific

CV Akagi takes a working torpedo hit from SS Tuna while supporting the final approach of an invasion force of Port Moresby. We've certainly had plenty of submarines torpedoing carriers this game! Luckily the damage is not too bad at 22 system and 12 floatation. Akagi is a tough girl and can still make 4 hexes per phase.

SRA

The 91st Naval Guard Unit uses landing barges from Georgetown to cross over to Sumatra and capture Langsa.

China

Lead elements of a Japanese army have crossed the river and captured Henyang. Other Japanese forces have arrived to directly attack Changsha and yet others still are looking to stage a dangerous crossing into Changteh. Chinese forces are moving all over the place attempting to respond to my multiple offensives, with Encircled prioritizing his attempt to stop me from breaking into the Chunking plain above all else.

The multipronged Japanese onslaught in China is paying plenty of dividends. For instance, by repeatedly pushing back successive Chinese armies north on the Ankang road, a large albeit battered Chinese army now finds itself overstacked at the key 81,40 hex and is being dreadfully affected by airstrikes. For instance this strike knocks out a huge number of enemy troops despite thunderstorms and the mountainous terrain.

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 69
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 69

1387 casualties reported
Squads: 30 destroyed, 61 disabled
Non Combat: 40 destroyed, 73 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 10 (1 destroyed, 9 disabled)

The Japanese also attack Changsha for the first time and reduce forts to 3 at relatively little cost. I am confident I will be able to take the Changsha basin before the end of the month.

The Japanese 13th Division crosses into Changteh and suffers severe disablements but only 4 squads destroyed. I knew this was going to be brutal but that's ok, the key thing is that the crossing has been made.

In my previous games as Japan I have always been able to break into the Chunking plain by February of 1942. I think I have a decent shot of doing the same in this one.

South Pacific

The 65th Brigade captures Port Moresby, driving the Australian survivors into the Owen Stanley mountains.

SRA

Singapore is conquered! Unfortunately, the entire base is completely destroyed. This is the third time I play as the Japanese and the third time that has happened. Aside from the initial shock attack across the causeway, all subsequent attacks are deliberate attacks, so I don't think there is anything else I can do to reduce the risks of industry annihilation.

Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 66174 troops, 661 guns, 403 vehicles, Assault Value = 2272

Defending force 28779 troops, 378 guns, 261 vehicles, Assault Value = 351

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Japanese adjusted assault: 2417

Allied adjusted defense: 695

Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Singapore !!!

A major fight develops in the air over Soerabaja as Japanese fighters encounter a stiff Allied CAP over the city. In this fight, 44 enemy fighters are shot down for the loss of 6 Zeros.

Burma

Encircled has assembled the 17th Division in Burma and today he uses it to drive back some of my forward elements at Toungoo.

China

Changsha and Liuchow are both conquered by Japanese forces.

Singapore mines are all cleared up and Japanese engineers are making very rapid progress repairing airfield and port damage. Transport ships are on their way to pick up the conquerors of Singapore for their next missions.

Japanese troops capture Tjilatjap on Java. Approximately 75% of the island is already taken by the Empire.

The Dutch sortie with three of their destroyers to intercept Japanese shipping converging on Singapore. The Dutch valiantly tangle with numerous Japanese patrolling warships and actually do good damage to a bunch of superior Imperial destroyers. They were too few in number however and one Dutch destroyer was sunk by Japanese ships and the other two succumbed to Betty torpedo bombers during the air phase.

Japanese paratroopers capture Padang in Sumatra.

SouthWest Pacific

I land the 144th Infantry Regiment on Horn Island and I think I took Encircled by surprise as 7 PBY-5 patrol aircraft are found and destroyed on the ground upon the capitulation of the Australian garrison. Elsewhere in the area Japanese troops are accelerating their landing operations now that Port Moresby has been captured, landing on Milne Bay today for instance amongst others.

China

Imperial troops seize Siangtan. Japanese troops are advancing across the theatre, determined to keep the Chinese off balance.

Singapore's airfield/port damage is repaired and a number of islands around it have been captured. The Dutch are using the numerous islands and bases around the area to host their seaplanes for naval search purposes and I am working to reduce their visibility.

Burma

Prome is captured by Imperial troops.

China

Japanese forces capture Shaoyang as they continue pursuing retreating Chinese forces to the west of Changsha.

Encircled sent in Hurricane IIb, H-81, and P-40E fighter squadrons to disrupt my bomber attack on the Chinese blocking positions to the east of Kienko. The Allies shoot down more Japanese fighters than they lose but the Sallies are untouched and drive their attacks home. I am hoping to take hex 80,40 very soon which would then leave only hex 79,41 in my way before I reach Kienko and thus break into the Chunking plain. It looks like the Chinese blocking position at 79,41 will be tough to push through though.

I-15 sights CL Sumatra fleeing away from Java and puts a torpedo into her. The Dutch light cruiser is heavily damaged but still afloat as it retreats southwards towards Australia.

Two Japanese infantry divisions and other auxiliary forces land at Palembang. Escorting warships do a good job of keeping the enemy CD guns supressed. Further to the north, a Japanese infantry regiment and a tank regiment land at Tandjoengbalai with the mission to advance on and seize Medan. The Imperial offensive on Sumatra has thus kicked off into high gear.

Malang on Java is captured.

Six Japanese battleships bombard Cagayan to which US/Filipino forces in Mindanao had retreated to. The bombardment proves very effective and allows the Japanese forces that had just arrived to take the base in their first attack.

Ground combat at Cagayan (79,89)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 8165 troops, 51 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 322

Defending force 8080 troops, 56 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 312

Japanese forces succeeded in throwing back the Chinese from their position at 80,40 near Kienko. They start marching forward to face the last Chinese position that needs to be overcome before reaching the Chungking plain.

A big turn!

Northern Australia

Encircled is up to something in northern Australia. He has been moving up forces towards Darwin and has been attempting to resupply by sea while my forces are still busy elsewhere. I believe he is looking to make a significant stand here. I sent a few destroyers to investigate and they met two task forces of six PT boats each. They completely destroy the first task force but the fight with the other task force results in no losses.

SRA

The Allied carriers strike!

Having landed Japanese troops the previous turn at Tandjoengbalai, I had intended to pull the Japanese ships back from the base towards Singapore today but it was unfortunately one of the things that I overlooked while rushing to complete the turn. The Japanese ships were thus still hanging around the area dropping off supply when the Allied carriers surged forward into position. The resulting strikes caused some notable damage, sinking the heavy cruiser Kumano and damaging two others. A Kagero class destroyer is also sunk.

This obviously sucks, but I think I actually got lucky here. Weather was not great in the morning phase when the attack happened, and there was no afternoon strike at all. I deserve to be punished for forgetting to pull the ships back but thankfully the punishment is less than it could have been. Also interesting to see that Encircled is willing to put his carriers in harms way within range of my torpedo bombers. That is good information to note.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Tandjoengbalai at 47,78

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Allied aircraft
Albacore I x 13
F2A-3 Buffalo x 27
SBD-2 Dauntless x 68
SBD-3 Dauntless x 17

Allied aircraft losses
SBD-2 Dauntless: 4 damaged
SBD-2 Dauntless: 1 destroyed by flak
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed by flak

Japanese Ships
CA Kumano, Bomb hits 8, heavy fires, heavy damage
CA Mikuma, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires
CA Suzuya, Bomb hits 3, on fire
DD Maikaze, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Yukikaze
DD Tokitsukaze, Bomb hits 1, on fire

The good news is Palembang was attacked and seized with very little damage to the oil! Always a massive relief when that happens, especially given the rotten luck I have had with shattered industry when capturing bases during this game.

An infantry regiment is landed on Makassar. 10 Dutch CW-22 light bombers sortie to strike the convoy but are all shot down by Zeros on LRCAP.

China

Kukong is captured and Sian will be attacked in two turns. I think I have a good chance of taking Sian in one or two attacks. Either way it should be in Japanese hands before the end of the month.
