Historical PBEM - Japanese Commander's(SeaWolF K) Daily Brief
Thayne and I agreed to play a PBEM with a historical feel to it and write dual AARs without reading each other’s. This is a game of firsts for me, first PBEM and first time playing Japan.
Scen 15 – Historical First Turn, Surprise on, Extremely variable reinforcements, both Sub Docs on, Fixed start.
Here are the restrictions that I am using:
1) No IJA and IJN land forces in the same attack (I can’t find a reference where they ever fought alongside each other)
2) No Invasions with IJA units that are less than 50% prepared (This is to simulate the great reluctance of the IJA to commit troops to support Naval invasions)\
3) No attacks (except northern Borneo) in the DEI until Singapore is bottled up (all bases except Singapore captured). This represents that those forces that would be committed to DEI acting as a reserve for the Malay Campaign.
4) There will be a 600 point reserve assigned to the Philippines until the Allies are pushed into one hex on Luzon.
5) No IJN units (air or land) inland in China. This is to represent the Army nature of that conflict
6) No second day strike on Pearl Harbor, The Japanese were historically concerned about other American Forces in the area, KB will also sprint away at Full speed on the 8.
7) No advance into Burma above Tavoy before Singapore is isolated
8) No “Hail Mary” invasions all invasions will be supported by LBA or Carriers.
Thayne doesn’t know most of these. The format of my AAR will be that of a Daily Briefing that would be provided to the commander (who I am assuming will be a naval officer), with the results of major actions and planning for future moves. At the end of each post will be the commanders direction back to his staff.
I am playing this game with the expectation that I will lose. However, I will consider myself successful if I can last till 45 and sink more ships than historical.

Daily Brief - 0630 8 Dec 1941
Sir,
Yesterday as per the Emperor’s Direction, our forces launched a surprise attack on the forces of the USA, Britain, and the Philippines. Attached is a summary of the results of yesterday’s action and future plans
CENTRAL PACFIC
- KB launched an air raid on Pearl Harbor catching the Americans initially by surprise. Unfortunately, they rallied quickly and inflicted approx 10% losses on the attacking force. Post strike photo analysis of the raid indicates 1 New Orleans Class CA and 1 PT boat sunk. 6 BB’s (2 may be TCL) and 1 DM (May by TCL) heavily damaged, 2 BB’s, 1 CA, 1 CL, 1 DD, 1 SS, and 1 DM damaged.
- Wake Island was invaded and land combat continues
- SS I-1 reports being hit by a bomb from an aircraft and is retiring for repairs
PHILIPPINES
- Air Raids from Formosa hit Clark Field inflicting heavy losses on the American Aircraft
- 65th brigade landed in good shape at Vigan
- 48 Div is almost completely ashore at Aparri
- 4 Div is boarding transports in Japan for Aparri
- 56th Brigade is heading for Davo
- Minimal losses suffered and operation is on track
- Various support forces are boarding ships at Pescadores with orders to land at Aparri when secured
MALAY
- 18TH Div landed a Khota Bhora with acceptable losses, the division commander reports that he hopes to have the area secured within 72 hours
- Singapore was hit by land based naval air, however bad weather hindered accuracy and minimal losses were inflicted. 3 bombers did not return.
- The destroyer Asahio was hit by a 500 lb bomb and is headed for Saigon for repairs
- The 56th division is preparing to offload at Songkhla.
- Army commanders resist any suggestion of attacking the DEI until the commonwealth forces in Malay are reduced.
Losses today : 33 A/C, 1 DD, 1 SS damaged
Intelligence estimates allied losses as 250 A/C, 1 CA and 1 PT boat.
Very well,
Issue orders to the 4th Fleet to prepare a second invasion force for Wake and order KB to support the invasion on its way back to Japan
2nd division is to prepare for operations on Sumatra.
Have Southern area army prepare 3 brigades for action on Java and one for Northern Borneo.
Prepare plans for operations to secure New Guinea and the Solomon Islands

9 Dec Brief
Daily Brief - 0630 9 Dec 1941
Sir,
Attached is today report of the results of yesterday’s action and future plans
CENTRAL PACFIC
- I-9 reports encountering a YORKTOWN class CV west of Pearl headed west. She reports an unsuccessful attack on the Carrier. Intelligence’s best estimate is that she is heading to relieve Wake Island.
- Nagumo reports he is proceeding SW in an attempt to intercept the CV south of Midway
- The defenders of Wake Island inflicted severe damage on the transports offshore, but our forces compelled the imperialists to surrender. 12 F4F wildcats were reported captured
- SS I-3 missed her required report east of Pearl Harbor and is believed lost
PHILIPPINES
- 65th brigade captured in good shape Vigan
- 48 Div captured Aparri
- 4 Div is boarding transports in Japan for Aparri
- TF 48 is awaiting escort to land at Davao
- SS I-124 reports two torpedo hits on a AS class ship, and received a depth charge hit in return
- Sighting reports of numerous individual vessels steaming in all directions are reported. Kates from the CVL Ryujo report 4 bomb hits on a large American troop transport. Commanders on Formosa report no targets large enough were detected to justify a strike.
- Various support forces left Pescadores today with orders to land at Aparri. Air Operations are expected to commence NET 12 Dec 1941
MALAY
- 18TH Div was repulsed at Khota Bhora, the division commander reports that he cannot launch further offensive operations for at least 24 hours
- Force Z was attacked at Singapore. One minor hit was reported on the Prince of Wales. 6 bombers and 2 fighters did not return.
- The 56th division is offloading at Songkhla.
- Army commanders continue to resist any suggestion of attacking the DEI until the commonwealth forces in Malay are reduced.
Losses today : 11 A/C, 1 SS
Intelligence estimates allied losses as 19 A/C, 1 MSW.
Very well,
Issue orders to the 4th Fleet to divert the second invasion force for Wake to the Gilbert Islands and order Nagumo return to the Marshals after investigating the reported American CV headed west. I personally feel that she will turn around and steam back to Pearl Harbor now that Wake has fallen. (In reality, I think the sub got the course wrong but I am going to react to the data given like a real commander would).
I want a full briefing on production in the next 72 hours. Inputs from all experts seeing these orders are to be solicited. See to it that this request receives widest disimination.
Remind the commanders on Formosa that every ship they let escape will be back with more Americans. If they continue to show a lack of devotion to duty, they will be replaced.
I still want to see plans for operations to secure New Guinea and the Solomon Islands
And let the zero pilots in Saigon know that they need to train in protecting themselves and their bombers from the RAF. Current A/A loss totals over Singapore 11 Japanese (4 zeros) to seven buffalos

Experts
During the course of this AAR, I plan to ask for the advice of experts at times. The experts are anyone reading this thread, and as recognized experts you are always welcome to make suggestions for future activities. And as all commanders tend to do, the advice may be heeded or ignored.
RE: Experts
If you haven't already seen it there are some good hints about production n here:
http://mathubert.free.fr/witp_faq.htm
Also, take the north coast of Borneo as soon as you can. Both Miri and Brunei have tons of oil. The sooner you start shipping it back to japan the more you'll stockpile.... Kuching can be a tougher nut to crack.
If you want to seal off the Phillipines thinka about an assault on Cagayan, it makes a fine airbase for sinking allied shipping from.
Also think about getting aviation support troops into Bangkok, some sneaky allied players like to bombard your advance along the coast there, some Betty's and Nells with fighter escorts will either discourage or embaress them. Try to use the inland railway running parallel, that way you can trap and destroy the troops along there.
Bomb allied troops and keep bombing them. Their AA is not initally very good and every time you kill some you also disrupt their units this making them less effective and slower on the move. As a bonus your fly-boys gain experience.

Good luck! I am very pleased this game is happening
I particularly like the rule you have made about not mixing IJA and IJN troops on invasions. Are you going to apply it to support forces too? I try to do this but find it extremely difficult not to mix up IJA and IJN base forces & aviation units/regts for example. Not to mention Air HQs ...
Don't allow yourself to get worried because you are not progressing at the frenetic pace seen in some other AARs. You have plenty of time to achieve your goals, especially as Thayne is not going to be a gamey-ass.

Production
- The oil in the Home Islands doesn't completely run out until July/August time.
- Manchuria is self-sufficient in oil so you will always have a small heavy industry capacity whatever happens.
- You definitely need to expand your armament factories a bit.
- Whether to expand any other factories is less certain. Far more important than any physical equipment is the lack of trained pilots. Without touching aircraft production you will still produce far more planes than you have pilots for. This even applies to the IJA though it takes far longer for the problem to manifest there.
- You can safely halt Nate, Sally & Nell production as you have vast pools of these available. The same goes for the not hugely useful Hickory and Ida (both located at Tokyo).
- Without greatly expanding your Naval Shipyards you have no chance of completing all scheduled warships on time. The big consumers of effort here are the Yamato, Musashi, Shinano & Taiho. It may be worth cancelling all or some of these in order to get all the lesser CVs/CVLs and the DDs out of the door on time.
- I would set at least 5 ARs and 5 MLEs to build. These ships will be absolutely vital later on. Your Merchant Shipyards should be able to cope if you halt all AP and AK production for a while (look for ships less than 250 days out in the availability list). Japan starts with absolutely loads of these types of ships. Unless you are reckless I can't see why you would need to replace any until the Allied sub effort starts to kick in seriously c.1943. Tankers are a different matter, continue to build all of these.

Sir,
Attached is today report of the results of yesterday’s action and future plans
CENTRAL PACFIC
- Nagumo reports he was unsuccessful in his attempt to intercept the CV south of Midway and is returning to the Marshals for fuel and then planning of sailing for the SRA to support multiple planned landings after Singapore falls
- The Wake Island invasion force is returning to the Marshalls to pick up a base force and open the airfield at Wake
- SS patrol lines report no contacts and American shipping seams to be scarce.
- The occupation of the Giliberts and Baker Island is expected to begin today.
PHILIPPINES
- The invasion forces planned by our Army friends did not believe that they would have to bring supplies with them for operations, TF 91 has set sail to deliver the required supplies. A three day hold on operations will be necessary because of this oversight
- 4 Div is boarding transports in Japan for Aparri
- TF 48 has sailed to land at Davao
-- Sighting reports of numerous individual vessels steaming in all directions are reported. Kates from the CVL Ryujo report 1 bomb hit on a large American Sub Tender. Commanders on Formosa report no targets large enough were detected to justify a strike.
- Various support forces left Pescadores today with orders to land at Aparri. Air Operations are expected to commence NET 12 Dec 1941
MALAY
- 18TH Div at Khota Bhora, the division commander reports that has “encouraged” the leader of the previous attack to lead a charge today. He reports that this will have one of two outcomes, either he will take Khota Bhora, or an ineffective officer will be allowed the glory of dieing for the Emperor. Naval beach parties report that he is secretly hoping that these are not exclusive events.
- The Army has corrected dispatches stating that the 5th division not the 56th division is offloading at Songkhla.
- The Army has agreed to launch operations against northern Borneo, under the condition that there are simultaneous landings at Kuching, Miri, and Burnei. They are willing to commit the 35th brigade to Kuching, but expect the navy to provide the troops for Mir, and Burnei.
- The Army flew CAP over Khota Bhora today and shot down 12 aircraft for the loss of one Oscar. The commander of 64th fighter sentai does not see why the navy seems to have such problems shooting down these Buffalos. He states that he will see to it that some Oscars are made available to the Navy to replace their zeros but not until they figure out how to fly them in combat.
Losses today : 3 A/C
Intelligence estimates allied losses as 20 A/C, 1 AS.
Very well,
First of all, THERE WILL BE NO MORE ARMY LOADMASTERS IN CHARGE OF LOADING INVASION FORCES. I know they believe in the spirit of the imperial soldier, but the troops STILL NEED AMMO!!!!! See if the commander of the 18th division, LtGen Mutaguchi has room for some loadmasters, tell him it is my opinion that they have the necessary leadership qualities to lead his next charge.
I want the briefing on production with recommendations in the morning. I hear the several esteemed advisors to the Emperor have provided inputs, make sure their suggestions are given full weight.
Please inform the commanding officer of the 64th fighter sentai, that the navy is quite capable of flying planes in combat. Inform LCDR Sunahara if he cannot get his pilots to perform well in combat that LtGen Mutaguchi has offered him a job as a favor to me.
WHERE ARE MY PLANS FOR THE SOLOMONS AND NEW GEINEA!!!!!
And let the zero pilots in Saigon know that they need to train in protecting themselves and their bombers from the RAF. Current A/A loss totals over Singapore 11 Japanese (4 zeros) to seven buffalos

11 Dec Brief
Daily Brief - 0630 11 Dec 1941
Sir,
Attached is today report of the results of yesterday’s action, future plans, and selected items of request
PRODUCTION
- Sir, at your request we’ve consulted the industrial experts of the empire and we are especially grateful to Sprior and Captain Cruft for their suggestions
- The main recommendation is to increase the production of A6M2, B5N, and D3A. To accomplish this increase in production it is recommended that the following type of A/C be discontinued or curtailed Ki-27, A5M4, Ki-27, Ki-51, and G3M.
- It is also suggested that armament production be increased by 50%, and 100 points of shipyard production be diverted from merchant ship production to naval production.
- Five AK’s are recommended to be converted to AR, and an additional three converted to MLE.
- Further review of production is recommended on 1 Jan
CENTRAL PACFIC
- No American activity to report
- SS patrol lines report no contacts and American shipping seams to be scarce.
- The occupation of the Gilberts begin today with the occupation of Makin island, resistance was estimated at 4 native police officers.
PHILIPPINES
- Operations remain on hold due to a lack of supplies
- 4 Div has left Japan for Aparri
- TF 48 has sailed to land at Davao
-Sighting reports of numerous individual vessels steaming in all directions are reported. Kates from the CVL Ryujo report successful torpedo attacks on 1 TK and 1 PG.
- Our commanders in Formosa continue to refuse to launch strikes on the Americans, the excuse today was weather. Replacements have been identified if transfers to Lt Gen Mutaguchi become necessary.
- Various support forces will land at Aparri tonight. Air Operations are expected to commence NET 12 Dec 1941. These forces are carrying sufficient supplies to resume offensive operations.
MALAY
- Lt Gen Mutaguchi reports the 18TH Division’s attack of Khota Bhora work splendidly, with the base being captured. The disgraced officer died leading the attack reclaiming his honor. The 18th is in pursuit of the retreating Commonwealth forces. Naval beach parties report that the base is in bad shape and repairs will take four weeks.
- The Imperial Guards and 5th divisions are marching on Alor Star ETA on the 5th is 24 hours, the Guards will require at least three more days.
- The operations against northern Borneo set sail from Camranh Bay, with TF 120 carrying the 35th brigade to Kuching, TF 122 carrying the 9th base force and 91 Naval Garrison to Burnei, and TF 84 sailed 48 hours ago carrying the Sasebo 3 SNLF for Miri.
- The Army flew CAP over Khota Bhora today with no action. Reports indicate that 6 Hudson bombers were destroyed on the ground when the base was captured.
- The Air forces in Saigon refuse to launch strikes again. Replacements have not yet been identified.
- The RAF stopped launching strikes on our forces today leading intelligence to believe that they have been sufficiently reduced to be a non-factor in upcoming operations.
NEW GUINEA AND SOLOMONS
- Sir the plans are being formulated as we speak. Four landing forces, four base forces, and two engineering units have sailed for Truk. Once they arrive they will prepare for operations, but the operations must wait until progress in the DEI and Philippines have progressed to the point to free up surface escorts.
- Detailed plans will be forwarded for your review upon completion
Losses today : 6 A/C
Intelligence estimates allied losses as 6 A/C, 1 PG.
Very well,
The production recommendations from the experts sound reasonable and will be executed today.
Send a fact finding team to see why our Naval LBA has come out of the war to date looking like a bunch of High School students. This does not bode well, when considering that the training of our pilots is only getting shorter.
Send my congratulations to Lt Gen Mutaguchi on a well planned and successful attack. I want an airbase in Malay ASAP.
I want operations to begin with the objective of taking Rabaul NLT 7 Jan 42.

Adm Seawolf's personal Journal
From time to time I will post excerpts from both Capt Kora and Adm Seawolf's personal journals. This will be in addition to the daily brief.
Personal Journal 11 Dec 1941
After five days of conflict, I have been shocked and appalled by the general incompetence that seems to be pervasive in the Naval ranks. I am concerned that if we cannot stand up to the Americans now, we are doomed to failure in this test of arms. I personally gave my word to the emperor that we would be successful for at least a period of six months, I now fear that this may not be possible. If this comes to pass, I will do what honor demands and lead a strike on the nearest American Base without the intention of returning.
On the brighter side, Capt Kora seems to be turning into a fine chief of staff. He is efficient and concise with his reports, and is always able to direct my anger and frustration toward a useful end. I will have to make sure that he stays assigned to my staff as efficient staff officers are hard to find.
Although I understand the lack of resources to advance in the south pacific, I am eager to do so at the first opportunity. I wonder if the 1st carrier strike force should raid the Coral Sea in the February timeframe, in time to catch the first convoys that my San Francisco spies have reported the Americans intend to send to Australia in the event of war. Something for my staff to begin planning an operational plan for. It will have to wait until Java has been reduced however, as the carriers are needed there first.
I will have to detail the relationship with the Army at a later date. If this document were to be compromised, I would not want my current feelings stated. However, they must realize that at some point we must stop expending more energy fighting each other than the Americans.

RE: 12 Dec Brief
Heres where I stand currently, I loaded a second invasion force for Wake when it did not fall on day one. I am trying to decide if I should use KB and it to invade one of Baker, Canton, or Palmyra Atolls. I am trying to decide based on two factors, one would a historical Japanese commander consider this effort in the first two weeks of the war, and two which target makes the most sense. (I have follow up forces en route that could take Baker if I go for Canton or Palmyra. Any comments, I am torn on this one

Sir,
Attached is today report of the results of yesterday’s action, future plans, and selected items of request. Today was a quiet day as our forces continue to reposition themselves.
CENTRAL PACFIC
- Sir the American Carriers have been located by a glen at Pearl Harbor. Along with what is reported to be multiple transports. It may be an attempt to respond to our operations in the Gilbert Island area.
- The occupation of the Gilberts continues with the forces headed to Tarawa and Apamama.
- Sir, the staff has developed three alternatives of ADM Shimizu suggestion. All require at least two carrier divisions to support. First is an occupation of Baker island. The risk of this operation is considered to be low and may not require carrier support. The second is attacking Canton Island, at least two if not four carriers will be required to support this operation. The final and most risky operation is an attempt to occupy Palmyra Island, this would require at least four carriers and holds the largest risk at it is only 600 miles from Pearl Harbor. Nagumo has to refuel in the Marshals and so we have 48 hours before we need to commit to a plan of action. The submarine scouting force has orders to continue to shadow the American carriers and provide the necessary updates to their position. All these contingencies would use the troops that were embarked to relieve Wake Island.
PHILIPPINES
- Supplies have finally arrived
- Our commanders in Formosa have finally decided to launch an attack on Manilia, suffering the loss of one zero in exchange for 3 P-40E.

Zeros from Saigon have been ordered to fly cover over these forces for the run in.
- The Air forces in Saigon launched strikes today claiming that weather has prevented them from flying for the past week, however they all managed to miss their targets! Replacements have been identified.
- The RAF was quiet again today leading intelligence to believe that they have been sufficiently reduced to be a non-factor in upcoming operations.

You can (in fact you must) pursue more than one thrust at a time at this point in the war. The Malaya campaign is mostly land-based. You will need to bring follow-on forces (armour and engineers mostly) from Taan and require some escorts for them. Some allied players like to send the RN to the south of Borneo to try and surprise you there (no, I haven't read the alllied thread so don't know if it's planned), and others like to bombard the coast by Tavoy. Get base forces up into Bangkok abd get Betties/Nells/Zeroes up there to deter the RN.
Palmyra is probably untennable. You will be able to take it but won't be able to hold it for long, Allied LBA operating from Pearl will prevent proper re-inforcement very painful.
Baker is do-able and is not initially garrisoned. You may want to use kb as a covering force.
Don't forget mini-kb too, you have 3 (?) CVE/Ls in Japan and loads of carrier capable planes to land on them. You can use these to cover landings in the SRA and launch raids into Tjilitap and Palembang - if the allies want to plunder the resource reserves make them pay...

This is really answering the question on the other thread about invading Canton Island.
These would be my criteria for doing this in what I would consider a non-gamey fashion:-
1) All Gilberts occupied, including Baker Island & Nauru.
2) Having at least a Patrol air presence in the Gilberts.
3) Covering the invasion force with some carriers and cruiser-led surface forces.
4) For the actual landing, only using a LCU assigned to 4th Fleet.
5) Allowing the chosen LCU to build up at least 25 preparation points.
If you were to follow all that you'd probably be looking at January timescale. Which would still be fine in terms of Allied weakness. I think it would be legimitate to blockade the island from December onwards to prevent ground re-inforcement.
FWIW I have successfully invaded Canton Island in one of my two PBEMs. It does not stop B-17s flying to Australia but it does prevent P-40s and shorter-legged bombers from moving beyond Palymra other than by ship.
From reading AARs and stuff I think the main way to avoid being gamey as the Japanese is to only use units in the area that they are assigned to. Stop yourself using LCUs and airgroups without paying PPs to change their HQ first.
I split up the map amongst the command HQs as follows:-
1) Kwantung Area Army = Manchuria & Korea. Sits on its ass until 1945.
2) China Expeditionary Army = China, including Hong Kong, Pakhoi & Nanning.
3) Burma Area Army = Burma i.e. everything north of Victoria Point and west of the brown border line.
4) 4th Fleet = Bonin/Iwo Jima, Marianas, Marshalls, Gilberts and all points east.
5) Southeast Fleet = Palau, Yap, Ulithi, Truk, New Britain, New Ireland, Solomons, New Guinea etc.
6) Southern Area Army = everywhere else except Kwantung.
The Palau-Truk axis is a bit ambiguous, I think it's OK (nay unavoidable) to mix and match 4th/Southeast Fleet units on those islands. It's also OK for Southern Area Army units to "pass through" or "rest temporarily" at Palau.
