Attention:

1st player had quit but a another came to the rescue (Mmoore62).

I named this fools edition because the CEO and also some of his commanders seem prone to foolish actions. The Allied player is a guy from Hessen in fact a neighbouring region. I am mostly a fool in nav/air actions it seems while the land combat is ok.

Maybe this helps me to manage my stuff better. I played 2 AI campaigns before and "won" both easily - I quit the Japanese game in the mid of 43 because it seemed the AI was kind of broken at this point (not to mention it lost too many major ships), the Allied game is over 3 years ago I quit this one in mid 44 (landed in North Japan, Hokaido etc. only problem seemed to be Kamikazes at this stage to the Allied war effort).

HR´s are quite usual ones, sweeps are 20k in 42, 25 in 43 etc., no nav bombing by 4e under 10k, pay PPs for restricted units, no 1 ship bait fleets of AKLs...

CH: When I asked the Allied why I see not much movement at this front he told me, one can not do much there this early anyway. So it seems he mostly put quite a lot of troops in the bigger cities and also just left ones in better terrain as speed bumps. But did not do the recommended tactic in pulling back and build a line in the good terrain. Wenchow was quite a problem to take, but it fell 2 weeks ago. Chinese surrendered. We besiege Kweiyang and Changsa right now, have moved north, took Sian and then west as you can see on the pic. Other areas will be shown later as well some info regarding the foolish nav/air battles.

This is a "historical" first turn game btw. So the PH stike and most landing at the beginning follow the normal timeline. So called "Intel" said 3 BBs and 1 CL sunk at PH, I guess I am lucky if one of the BBs sank at all. California was just reported as "still in action" - after almost 5 months So no fancy, bold alternative strikes to report here like most other games seem to have

Phils: Pretty much historical except that we were a bit faster, so no need to post a pic of the area. The Allies sent out all their subs and PTs to hunt down our invasion fleets but I was prepared (for once) and had severall smaller ASW fleets on patrol. Otherwise all bigger shipping and most of the planes were evacuated by the Allies. I only remember CA Houston and a couple small DDs sunk in this area and time, ecxept 20 or so smaller ships, aux and cargos. So nothing that really did hurt the Allies there. However when we landed in the area of Manadao and Ternate pretty quick and were once able to surpriise the Allied who lost ca. the half of the evacuated fighters from the Phils there - overrun on the ground. Ca. 25-30 planes or so reported lost "on the ground". This seemed the only bigger blow we were able to deal out there (except the CA and one bigger TK). But part of the reason was ofc that the Allied brought a lot of his ships and planes to safety.

Oil fields: Most oilfields in the vicinity (Miri etc.) were also occupied pretty fast, except Tarakan which held out longer (we had to send a bigger unit there).

Sumatra, Malaya: Except that we landed directly at Palembang (in the AI game I landed at Osthafen and walked to Palembang) and at Mersing (later than the so called Mersing gap described in the forum) no change big change to history. Palembang was only marginaly re-inforced by the Allies so we got that pretty fast. Some Allies were cut off from Singapore due to landing at Mersing, so this worked also pretty good. Then the usual assembling of forces at Johore and re-combining of fragments, shock attack to Singer and siege and bomb it. Our fighters were still good vs. the early British and Dutch, but already later ran in more serious opposition in form of RAF Hurries and the AVG and then it already showed that the IJA airforce is not really that good. The oil was only a bit damaged and is now at 100% the refineries suffered more, but they are not as important.

Both big boys from Force Z were sunk also as per reality:

So no real surprises on this pics:

Burma,India: So we send guys (mostly the vaunted Thai army) north and west to Burma and turned out the Allies were much stronger there - they made a forward defense around Rangoon, Pegu... so more stuff had to got there. This is scen 2 so the IJA gets some more troops incl. 2 or 3 "guards" divisions, 1 para brigade, 1 amphib brig and a tank brig. And even now I got a tank div (!). However the divs are quite "meh" they have only 50 exp and 50 mor!. And it seems the morale does not get higher for a reason so far. So also these troops were not enough, after I send a good "normal" div to Pegu however we got better results and lowered the forts. Pegu is clear terrain so even the huge enemy force there now had probs to hold and also a supply malus. He has 3-4 Indian and also 3 Auusie BRIGADES there along with some art and the leftovers from the Malaya campaign he could salvage (as you know mostly only battalions etc.).

Pegu given up by Allies and they make Rangoon a stronghold: So when our assaults got a bit better results and lowered the fort, he send all his stuff back to Rangoon andf we took Pegu without a fight. It would have been better if we were able to damage that troops a bit more before they get in the better terrain and forts of Rangoon. After some resting days we followed and are besieging Rangoon to this very day (I judge his troops there still too strong, we have 2 weak scen2 divs, 1 soso regiment and only 1 good regular IJA div there and now fill in some more stuff eg. a div from China was bought out, as well the scen2 tank brig will try to get better force ratio there. The rest are Thais and only 2 arty units not enough I guess.....Meanwhile the IJA airforce gets bloodied by the AVG and RAF.

Oscars savaged by RAF,AVG Sure we need also to bomb and supress Rangoon from the air, so we first tried fighter sweeps. Very bad, RAF,AVG is much better and we lost up to 50 planes. The worst was I forgot to change order for 2 units of old Oscar1b and the 2nd day brought down 20 or so more of them. While the first wave at least got some of the enemy shot down and later shown in ops report we got perhaps even a 3-1 in their favour for lost planes as the Oscar weapons were to weak to outright shoot them down, but at least damaged a lot it seems.

So we needed a blockade and the navy - they bombarded Rangoon with DDs and CAs and finally it looked like the CAP and airfields were weakened enough so we could send in bombers. Only at higher alt, some good AA. So a long process. Right now he is trying to fly supplies in there. We intercepted some of these flights. This is still ongoing, we also send infiltrators north to take Magwe etc. Also a weak CVL fleet or ours sunk a lot of cargo ships trying to bring more stuff and supply to Rangoon. Not to mention our surface forces which were on the way north to protect our landings also caught a lot of shipping. Only a Brits DD caused serious trouble who was very tough to sink but he also hit with a torp on our CL (made it to port).

Invasion India For the trouble in Burma ofc the what do you do you can bang your head or try to outflank right ? Which worked we landed at Coxs Bazar. Akyab below is also defended still by the Allies, 1 Indian div and smaller stuff, here also only a siege was possible for only 1 soso div of ours there, we now send a 2nd one. Perhaps that will do the trick. Otherwise the operation worked fine - as I said it seems I am better at ground combat - just check the pic. Chittgong was ofc the trouble spot, if we were stopped there this would delay the breakout to the better terrain, but turned out our 2 GOOD div plus much arty and tanks got the place with a 3-1 ratio - we then tried to hunt down some Allied survivors from this fight and managed to catch 1 Indian brigade and destroy it. But then we needed to turn to main objective Calcutta. We also let our tanks run wild and cut rail lines as you can see here:

Java, Timor, North Australia, Horn Is.: The Java conquest went ok, and it is now completly in our hands with Soerabaya now being a main base P7 and A6 already, We lost some good ships to some lucky Dutch bombing and dumb errors of mine regarding minefields, eg. a very good AMC was sunk along with 2 TBs (those are weak at the beginning but make good escorts later, so a pity to lose these!) Timor also went good, we did not bother with Ambon as most will land there I saw in the forum. But it seems now isolated and perhaps we later go there, small detachements also took the 2 small oil bases there, but their ports or too small to be of much value. Finally Wyndham, Broome, Derby. As the Allied had combined ALL or MOST fleets of any nation with the US in the south not much shipping there. We only sunk some aux and minesweepers, at Dawin was some bomber presence butonly Hudson 1 and Wirraway. And we got Koepnang to AF4 and a HQ there, so in theory Netties should be able to interdict any shipping there with torps provided they are detected and no CV CAP. But they did not detect anything big trying to interfere with our landings there. We send some Nells and a weak carrier group to Darwin, but as I said not much to get there. I believe Darwin was also out of supplies because no plane would sortie from there I am aware of, Hudsons could do some damage, but they did not fly. Our troops are 1 GOOD div, 1 TK reg and 3-4 smaller SNLF, guards etc. turned out the div was overkill. Katherine fell easily and Daly Water taken by Para jump. Darwin taken 2 days ago.

But HORN was another matter he even flew in re-inforecements of one AUS brigade there, we had to pull back the initial landing forces they were savaged (HORN is an atoll I realized) and a SNLF totally wiped out, later come back with a complete div and even this had trouble due to many disabled squads and NOT HEALING (!). This was not worth it for a small island however the Allies can easily sneak supply and planes there and be a dangerous nuisance, not to mention the troops there are worth to destroy to weaken the Aussie army. The enemy even counter attacked our div and got a 1:1, it took land bombing and bombardements to take this tiny island - never again :) This leads to most active and dangerous combat zone where the IJN lost quite a bit, the south pacific and guadalcanal and the area around PM - Cooktown. Later more about the disasters

No pic needed of North Aus I guess but here is the combat report from Darwin (2 days ago), as you can see supply minus:

South:Ok, Wake Is. invasion was called off, as our unit landing there was annihilated. We wanted to come back later with more, but the nav, air catastrophes in the area and the battles of PM and Horn Is. prevented this. From the AI games I know PM is quite important so we went there, but brought not enough stuff. We had to bring a complete div to take the place, the enemy would also feed more stuff per air to the place. Finally we got it and the remains of the Allies wandered to Terapo - 1 hex before they could reach it we landed there too to deny the stranded troops a resting place. They now still sit near Terapo but could not take it.. I will not describe in detail what I have where also no pics of the area - the Allied player was found in this forum and perhaps he still reads here and maybe also this AAR. He would bomb PM from Townsville with 4e and we were not able quickly to build it up and repair, but finally also with LR CAP from Buna, we managed to get enough losses on his bombers (mostly to ops) so that he rebased them to Luganville and Ndeni, there they trashed my base at Lunga (was not fully build) and our fighters had huge trouble there, in short the total destruction of Lunga could not be prevented. He also used B26s and now B25s. Before that we were going south a bit to Ndeni but only with weaker forces (even in scen 2 we do not have enough ofc to cover a wider area) - also I judged PM more important. He had so much stuff already at Luganville and in March already took Ndeni with our weak lft over forces destroyed there. You just can not stop massive Allied bomber raids on a small isolated base like this.

The Allies are already quick to build bases so his bombers would fly from there to Lunga (we still have Tassafaronga and Tulagi) other wise a good base at Shortland and a smaller one at Munda. We could also not prevent the bombarding runs of the Allied fleets (remember he has there the Brits, Aussies and Kiwis too). Our subs are useless sometimes they will shoot but only on a DD and then in turn plastered (esp. the RN ships are dangerous with their better exp). Mines did not work too. Only option would be bigger surface fleet and CVs to catch the bombardement fleets - we tried this and it worked ok with the surface fleets (but we lost cruisers) and the 2 CVLs we posted near Tassafaronga were surprised by 3-4 Allied CVs and sunk. 1 would have made it but a weak raid from dive bombers got 4-5 of them through and hit the already crippled ship, ammo explosion and gone. I can admit these 2 losses here as they were reported already. Also we lost a CVE at Shortlands harbour due to surprise 4e raid. CAP was only 1 weaker unit as the base was still building up. Most of my other ships and CVs and the region were also damaged and/or sunk.

Refer to these 2 threads - there you find also combat reports of my surface fleet bombed and the borked CV battle before (had to retire even if 1 CV was only hit by 1 bomb the damage was bad):

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4141121&mpage=1&key=
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4148281&mpage=1&key=

Later another borked battle, with 4 CVs and 2 CVLs in seperate fleets. The CVL one was following the CV one, but then only the CVs reacted to the enemy but the CVLs DID NOT and also did not follow. So they were now seperated by a hex. And worse the main CAP Zero (36!) unit was on one of the CVLs at range 0. So no CAP from the CVLs for the CVs. Both TFs were on react ZERO, but the CV commander seemed to have overidden this order... he was responsible that the 2 fleets seperated and left the CV one with a weak CAP not to mention the Kates on the CVLs would fly seperatly ofc. We managed to hit their ships pretty good anyway, but from all these battles and our huge losses only 1 British and 1 US CV are confirmed sunk. We had another 2 in sunk reports but one was quitely removed - the other is false too I guess. The Allied could strike our 2 CVLs near Tassafaronga with 3-4 CVs so it seems even the damage was not as bad as thought (I was thinking he could use max 2 CVs for a while, but did not take into account how fast the Allies can repair and the other British one that was - is? - there)...but the best is yet to come. In the afternoon our planes sortied again, BUT NOT AGAINST THE ENEMY CV fleet but against TANKERS in Townsville harbour.

Will post some combat reports later, but in short the Allies now sit at a good base at Lunga, already repaired most of the field and 80 fighters reported there. Also he seems to have 3 - 4 CVs ready for action - Hornet however was hit by some bombs from Kates on low alt flying from Tulagi. Guess not much damage, just as an earlier torp hit by Betties on another CV in the PM, Cooktown area. He sortied to interfere with our landings at Horn, but luckily only got a 4 ship amphib fleet sunk. Then our Netties would finally sortie against the CVs as PM had reached AF4 and more air support and fighters there. Over 50 or so with some escort. Most were shot down (30 or so), for only 1 single torp hit, and this hit seemed to have caused not much damage. They enemy also has maxed out bases at Ndeni and Luganville. As said before I can not tell the actual true ship losses here because I hope that the Allies get also some false reports :)

His campaign to Lunga started with massive 4e raids and bombardements - however some of these would go wrong. Eg. it seems the old BBs were too slow to get fast enough out of our plane range after the bombardement (we still had functioning fields at Lunga and Tulagi also an air HQ with torps!).

Still April, next day our sub misses AMs near Lunga....

Then we see a small force what is this.........PTs where did they come from they should not have the range! Nicks try strafing but are not really trained and hit with 1 MG shell

Morning Air attack on TF, near Lunga at 114,138

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 20 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Allied Ships
PT-61, Shell hits 1

..they try again but this time no hit....
..SS Drum misses our PBs
..we fail to dislogde isolated Chinese near Sian and lose a lot of disabled ? Will they ever heal, many units in Burma and China have so many disabled squads. Also most troops at Lunga are not able to fight anymore...
..we also fail at Kweiyang with up to 200 disabled...
..otherwise a quiet day for a change...

Next day... for a change a clever sub capt:

ASW attack near Ndeni at 118,142

Japanese Ships
SS I-19

Allied Ships
AM Rail
AM Kingfisher
AM Warrnambool
xAKL Iowan
AM Turkey

Captain of SS I-19 elects not to launch torpedoes at this target

..but these AMs clear some mines we left in a shallow hex near Lunga. Our mines so far hit NOTHING total failure Japanese mines...(except an old DD, which was reported as sunk, but it was NOT )
.. Dutch sub dispatches a minelayer of ours...
..another bombing of Rangoon by CAs as the Hurries were flying there...to soso effect...
..bombing of Akyab to bad effect of Nagato, CLs and some DDs (we managed to bring 2 AKEs in the area so we can reload BB guns now but only slooooow). Otherwise they needed to reload at Singers everytime which is too far away, not to mention the fuel that these BBs burn....
..Jakes hit one of the above AMs with 2x 60 kg...
..next Jake raid hits another AM with 3...

..then Jakes hit PTs that are out of FUEL I guess (dead in the water!):

fternoon Air attack on TF, near Kirakira at 118,140

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 3 NM, estimated altitude 2,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 1 minutes

PT-60 dead in the water ..

.. next failure against isolated Chinese.. in good terrain they can hold for years it seems...

..next day... Nells sortie in the south but hit only a tiny AKL ...but enemy CV CAP is gone, guess all the attacks and the small bomb hits made them uncomfortable...mabye we caused also some more serious damage on 1 or 2 CVs (none sunk and none found by subs as usual)
..we now daily hit Rangoon if weather allows....

Another total fail at Kweiyang, it seems they are not isolated and have supply: 330 disabled squads OMG, we then divided these divs and put some on reserve to get some combat power back, this will be a longer affair, just like Changsa is and Wenchow was....

Ground combat at Kweiyang (74,49)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 33880 troops, 343 guns, 92 vehicles, Assault Value = 933

..all the time we siege Changsa too and bomb it ofc. The Chinese are still strong, meanwhile we took Sian and swing west to the Chinese plains..see pic in 1st post.
..and our tanks made sightseeing in India.. during which they also take Darjeeling and drank a tea there...(in Jamshedpur they got coffee, much better!)
..next DA at Lunga, we are finished only hold on a thread still...

Next day, another Allied cruiser force near Lunga, they damaged 2 subs from us and we hit nothing this day or week or month (re. warships I mean)

... Another ASW 2xDD force of ours hits O19 3 times ..not much.. but it seems meanwhile the subs are thinned out there guess most or all send back and not sunk

Predictably the cruiser force hits Lunga AGAIN LOL.......but ....NOT YET KAMERADEN: Over 40 Bettys with light cloud should have been able to hit some more..but ok this CA is a quite good one so better than nothing, right`?

..afternoon 16 Betties fly again and HIT.......nothing......and then 6 Nells the same (all with torps)

..only the Jakes hit again, seems the best weapon we have at all: CA Indianapolis, Bomb hits 1
.. I was wrong some more Betties (28!!) sortie again - it seems they are relieved the enemy fighters are gone and are eager to fly..they say they hit 2 small CLs with 1 torp..wonder if they are honest
.. mistake from my side with 2 units shock at Kweiyang....2 divs out of action for a while...
..and finally the US with NZ help take LUNGA

.. and 3x hit at SS Drum by a PB...and 6x hit at O23 by a PB

..next day I6 is hit badly near Palmyra (this must be the first time after weeks that we find a convoy on the sea lanes , granted I had lots of subs near Guadalcanal ofc but also at the typical supply lines I would use as Allies to send stuff to OZ, Fiji, Luganville etc. either the Allies are ultra sneaky or our subs are failures...

Whow 60 (!!) Sallies sortie together with ok results but from high alt (17k): But I believe their should be some escorts (or I set LR CAP - to also interdict supply transports flying to Rangoon?) I belive the LR CAP does not show in the CR if no enemy fighters are there....

Oscars savaged by RAF,AVG

As the Allies against the AI it was the opposite for me in the same area.

Ive been doing Night bombing of the airfields where the enemy fighters are, will really help the fighter sweeps.

I was trying to limit any night bombing in this game by only allowing historical night bombers (like eg. Wellington and later B24s, Lancasters, Mosquitos etc.) and I avoid it up to now in this PBM. Even of the Allies had send B17 at night to PM (at 2 days) but the attacks were totally uneffective. So I did not bring it up that B17s normally after the rule were not allowed at night...after that he left the night bombing alone, so this is ok (it also adds more micromanagement this early, I agree from mid 43 on or so night bombing should be more common). Guess your Oscar pilots were elite and the others not the best then :) Also 4Es do not need night bombing the early IJ planes are not much danger to them.

The 1st of May42 . some small units action around Guadalcanal, incl. his PTs attack an ASW force, and our SC scores a hit with 8 cm on PT:)

... but is then sunk by a bombardement force (which destroys 2 fighers and damages 10 or so more at Tassa):

Day Time Surface Combat, near Tassafaronga at 113,137, Range 20,000 Yards

Allied Ships

CL Dragon
CL Durban
CL Colombo
CLAA Van Heemskerck

DD Vendetta

DD Norman

..as usual 2 of our subs fail again to hit anything from this TF, but plaster an xAKL with shells at Lunga
...can they not hit something worthy Not saying these small ships are totally worthless...but 4 torps for an AKL or AM is really over the top. Also there were 2 events earlier in the war, when 2 of our subs missed US CVs - one of them was a 6 torp spread all missed !!)

..bad sweep of ours at Lunga - we lose as much as them!!) and the 2nd unit did not fly I set the 1st one the 15k and the 2nd to 20k - only the 15k flew. Not good results - first they did ok, then it seemed more F4 and P39s arrived and many Zeros shot down.... no chance to counter their base building and airpower there it seems. Also with over 80 fighters at Lunga our Netties can not fly long range mission anymore. What if they sortie to attack some small ships there and get slaughtered. Any hint perhaps what to do?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on Lunga , at 114,138

..trying to push out this huge Chinese army in zero defense hex fails ( I planned to damage them enough and are no danger to our bases, rail lines and roads and then send these troops north to the CH plains, also the art units were already bought out these should go to India or an crisis spot later)

Any advise how to deal with the south, Lunga will be 100% repaired the next turn, over 80 fighters there and US has giant bases at Ndeni, Luganville, Noumea...we have no CVs left (sunk, in repair, upgrader next month) and only a few surface ships not sunk or in repair there. We now send some from Singer and Soerabaya (because there was zero naval action in the area). Also our subs ALSO do find and/or hit anything around India, Ceylon. I wonder if I should set subs to computer use, as my micromanagment for them is for almost zero effect....But ships can not do much (except at night if the others have so much air cover, we sunk also lots of their combat ships there, but they just keep coming!). Thanks...

.. Allies are cowards do not want to fight, but lay mines (1 sub sunk )

TF 251 encounters mine field at Lunga (114,138)

Japanese Ships
SS I-123, Mine hits 1, heavy damage

This is strange another sub claims a hit, but only on a Brith CV andno damage shown:

Sub attack near Kirakira at 115,139

Japanese Ships
SS I-25, hits 3

Allied Ships
CV Formidable, Torpedo hits 1
CL Durban
DD Stronghold
DD Van Ghent
DD Witte de With
DD Banckert
DD Perkins
DD Paladin
DD Norman
DD Nizam
DD Encounter

So I checked this sub and expected to find a super captn (if the hit was real), but this is one of the worst we have (so why bother changing commander if the good ones do not hit, but the bad ones?). The only thing I could find on this sub is that night exp is better than usual for subs (so exp most important?)...

Otherwise in China only bombardements from air and troops. But Allied cruiser fleet sinks another 2 PBs from us at Tassa, it remained there till day and ca. 8-9 Nells (other planes from same base DO NOT FLY?) attack, first with only bombs (why?) and same unit in afternoon this time with torps (why not 1st also torps?) but they hit nothing. But our CAP, escort at Tassa does quite good for a change we only lose 1 Nell + 1 Zero for 6 - 7 enemy fighters downed. He upgraded one of his CV groups to F4F4 - this is good so he ran out of F3s (these are actually better than F4 - 4 HMG are enough vs. Japanese planes)...

Our 2nd regular good div arrived at Akyab and the DA went superb (as I said our arty and the upper 1/3 of divs can be counted on, I hope Brits, Indians and Aussies have enough losses so they can not upgrade so fast to better squads, while the US has almost lost nothing on the ground so far)...

Ground combat at Akyab (54,45)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 28460 troops, 267 guns, 71 vehicles, Assault Value = 934

Defending force 13630 troops, 168 guns, 216 vehicles, Assault Value = 313

Japanese adjusted assault: 770

Allied adjusted defense: 107

Japanese assault odds: 7 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Akyab !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Hudson IIIa: 2 destroyed
Blenheim IV: 4 destroyed

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), fatigue(-), experience(-)
supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
630 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 62 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled

Allied ground losses:
4000 casualties reported
Squads: 108 destroyed, 15 disabled
Non Combat: 442 destroyed, 24 disabled
Engineers: 93 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 97 (97 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 168 (168 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 15
Units destroyed 1

Btw: I send some LR subs to the region around Perth and Karachi, they find nothing. As well the lone sub in the Aleutians does not. How can I improve this ? I read other AARs were IJN subs sink lots of TKs etc.

3 days of May 42: (now is the 7th)

...we ran a FULL SPEED fleet to Tassa because there was a small fleet which sank some PBs of ours (there are quite alot of PB sunk meanwhile, but I read here that they are not fuel efficient anyway. But they are useful enough to guard ports etc. maybe not so much as escort because they only have low exp and bad DCs - only the weak type 95). Out fleet cought the enemy but broke the battle off - I saw one of the DDs ran out of fuel this was probably the reason they did not press the attack more. Still good result older CA sunk for zero own losses:

FTER ACTION REPORTS FOR May 05, 42

... in China and India not much... we close to the CH plains and a concentric movement towards Calcutta, cleared 2 more CH corps on the way to Kienko (entrance to plains)
.... seems the Allied has figured out we are too strong and evacuated troops from Calcutta to Howrah, one of our TK regiments was quite trashed there at Howrah. But strong force now crossing the river to Calcutta...

... we clear some more Dutch islands and move stonger fleet assets south to assist there (from Singapore, Soerabaya...there is no enemy fleet presence, except now ca. a dozen subs came in - we only managed to damage 2 or so by air so far).

... an RO sub torpedoes an xAP in the south and is hit in turn once..

... Allied bomber offensive restarted after some quiet days now of course hitting Tassa, we can not stop them, only 4 enemy losses reported, only 1 4e But no planes destroyed on ground but ca. 30% damage to fields

...Allies have stronger fleets now at Lunga, seems even 2-3 CVs, recon says now up to 120 fighters there, must be overstacked - the Lunga field is still 3. Allies will soon have that build up tho... US,NZ troops march to Tassa....

... a bombardement fleet with some DDs and 2 CLs bombards Townsville but was sighted before and all planes were moved away just that turn, only minor damage caused. But also no hits on our fleet...

...Jakes bomb and hit xAPs in the south, but only with 60kg

...in the afternoon enemy fighters seem to be low enough and catch the Jakes and also Kates that sortied to hit this fleet, no hit but we lose over a dozen planes shot down by US fighters...(no escort everyone is on CAP there vs. bomber raids). Jake and Kate units now totally depleted and send to the hinterland...

... Allies send lots of fragmented raids to Tassa and Tulagi, but this time it seems to be sweeps and LR CAP as well old divebombers. One DB raid is caught without escort, we shoot down 4-5, the fighter combats are quite even out - not much Zero losses but Nicks take a beating. Only 2 Oscars from our LR CAP showed up and 1 is shot down form them... the weather was thunderstorm so I guess this was the reason of the many small sorties by the Allies (and/or overstacked airfield at Lunga?) and our LR planes having trouble to participate.

Anyway I need to figure out what to do down there, must take off a day to think about it - we also have now 3 bigger warships back from repairs there. I evacuated some troops from Tassa which seemed not to heal anyway (these retreated from Lunga), but the rest there is quite a big number still. Would suck to lose them all, these are only few real combat troops so if the US arrives in strength there....

We reached the 16th May 42 my PBM partner is very reliable even if we both could only make 1 turn in 2 days. I also had some conversation about the game, as he said he had bad luck with another torp hit on one of his CVs. I told him I was surprised to see the Allies going on the offense already in April 42. Also that I honestly think the forward defense of Burma (at Pegu, Rangoon, Akyab...) might turn out not in the Allies favor. But he told me in the south I can not to much anymore, as he has (now had) a massive fleet there, I needed to re-inforce India and therefore draw troops away from the south. In fact I do not need to as I have troops from the Phillipines now there at Rabaul and PM (and now also at Tassa)..

Also he thinks that Rangoon is a "Stachel in meinem Fleisch". Perhaps translated as "a sting in my flesh". Yes, I still besiege Rangoon and the Allies there hold, but I brought over meanwhile more tropps also 2 of the scen2 divisions and the tank brigade. As well some arty from China and Korea bought out...but I still could take the offense in India, so I doubt the the sting in flesh analogy he uses is true from my view. It will be shown in the next 2-3 turns when the first DA will take place (his troops should have supply problems there too).

Otherwise these days were much carnage in the sotuh seas around Guadalcanal, guess the waters there can be called ironbottom sounds also in this game... here is a video about some ships that sunk there in reality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJytlYgg-Dw

I will first report the CBI theater shortly and tomorrow the southern one:

- We took in China: Kienko, Tujun and yesterday even Changsa (most Chinese troops could retreat only a few surrendered)
- We still lay siege to Rangoon and bring in more troops, we took Lashio and Kalemjo in Burma
- We shortly lost Howrah shortly in India a tank reg was destroyed of ours, but we took Calcutta and yesterday also Diamond harbour and retook Howrah...

Not much going on there in the air or sea so far, but we lost a sub minelayer at Bombay which wanted to lay some mines there.... We also patrol now with 3-4 subs these areas in the distance but so far found no prey at all....

Rest of the month:

So our subs redeemed themselves with 1 hit on a CVs and 2 on a CLs all in the south. One US CV more seems to be confirmed sunk in the area now, which means at least 3 US CVs and 1 Brit CV "Indomitable" should be sunk...

The below pic in this post belongs to above battle!

...we hit a damaged DD and a minelayer ("Bungaree") near Ndeni with 1 sub torp each

...and sank/damage some smaller ships near Portland roads which I have no idea what their intention was with Nells from PM and Jeans from a CVE fleet that was moving from Singers to the southern theater..(perhaps they wanted to supply or safe the stranded troops from Terapo??).

..we also tried to hit Lunga again with the double aim to bombard and meet the ships from above battle. I figured they were damaged enough and/or out of ammo. At Lunga they should not be able to re-load heavy weapons (damaged port3). But they combined with some other ships as well the 3rd British R-class BB. And were quite formidable (not short enough of ammo to make an impact): 2 BBs , 1 CA and DD or ours sunk. 1 US BB of theirs confirmed sunk, another British one suspected sunk.

BTW: We also REEINFORCED TASSA, I decided there are too many units to let them be destroyed and as we seem to get sea supority again we brought in a veteran division from the Phillipines campaign (exp 84). They should be able to defend the place together with the left overs from Lunga and the others that were already there (but only aux untis and nav guards so nothing that could provide a capture by stronger US forces, but this division should do the trick). Most of the naval forces engaged in above battles were actually there before to protect the landings and troop convoi at Tassa. Which worked, as soon the convoi left I could use them overwise.

The Allied 4e bombers did not fly in the area for a while, so we reached also fort level 3 at Tassa.

Some massive surface battles. Recreating Ironbottom Sound there, eh? =)

I'm not sure if the mixed SCTF practice is a good one. A lot of players here seem to think BB/CA/CL seem to work better when in separate TFs.

Some of these TFs were too large it seems. Severall collisions on both sides, we have a DD and CL more damaged to the collision than to enemy action. But combat report said also Allied ships collided - but not known for which degree of damage. The Allied playerlikes to concentrate his stuff this is clear, we were also able to recon both Ndeni and Luganville, both together have over ca. 400-500 planes, as well up to 200-250 ships.

Re. my post 20, crippled sub - this one made it back to harbour, I will repair all damage than can be repaired.

Re another also crippled DD I tried to send back first to Munda (which worked) but then the damage increased while en route to Rabaul. This DD is now stuck at Shortland with ca. 80 float damage - most major.

After the bombardements of Lunga I thought the enemy fighters are now weakened and send 2 Zero units to sweep, but again no good result, our losses are 2x as high as the Allies. Seems Zero M2 is just too slow as a sweep plane.

Both sides laid mines in the Lunga area, we also laid a new field at Tassa and 3 enemy subs are reported hit there. We lost a sub at Lunga again (I know it is stupid to send them to harbour hexes, but I tried to catch one of the damaged British BBs - 1 or 2 plus a CA are reported at harbour of Lunga. Port 3 should not be able to repair them. Pity we have no air superiority there, otherwise we could try to bomb them). We also laid a field in an ocean hex - the entry one from the south to Lunga - but it faded without hit.

We had landed some forces at Cooktown as it was empty and took this town, but no air support to send there... The Allies now started to bomb the place with Hudsons, the Aussies also took back Normanton, which a small airborne unit (landed by an AK which sank running aground at a reef there btw) took 2 weeks ago. I could not follow up these landings with air or more units this was more or less distraction...

British DDs in the south hit 2 more subs of ours both need to go back, we hit a sub of theirs in exchange near Tassa.

Only smaller fleet units now left in the CBI area, but they bombard Rangoon every 2-3 days or so:

Night Naval bombardment of Rangoon at 54,53

Japanese Ships
CL Kinu
CL Isuzu
DD Tsuga
DD Kuretake
DD Akikaze
DD Hatakaze
DD Harukaze
DD Kamikaze

Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Resources hits 1
Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 22
Port hits 7

We were able to get finally enough supplies to re-inforce our 2E bombers there and all of them now hit Rangoon (switching to ground from airfield attack more and more). There are some stranded Allies near Akyab left that retreated in the jungle when we took the town. But they should not get supply. The same for others at Lashio. Only Rangoon and Mytkina (sp?)is now left in Allied hands there.

We chase around left over Aussies with tanks and snlf:

Ground combat at 75,128 (near Katherine)

Allied subs now often try to hit our cargo/TK fleets (guess the better radar makes a difference)... luckily the torps mostly miss or are duds. Will report any significant hit. Our subs miss a big AP near the Indian west coast. But hit later on an even bigger target:

Sub attack near Funafuti at 144,146

Japanese Ships
SS I-4, hits 2

Allied Ships
CV Saratoga, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
CA Chicago
CL Dragon
CL Emerald
CL Hobart
DD Perkins
DD Benham
DD Maury
DD Sims
DD Paladin
DD Nizam
DD Edsall
DD Farragut

Sub attack near Funafuti at 143,147

Japanese Ships
SS I-4

Allied Ships
CV Saratoga, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Paladin

Our fleets hit Lunga and Kirakira, the first one were only CLs and did not do much damage but the latter one was better:

Night Naval bombardment of Kirakira at 116,140

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 65 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 25 destroyed on ground

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima
BB Haruna
CA Kako
CA Kumano
CL Kiso

Allied ground losses:
231 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 31 disabled
Engineers: 20 destroyed, 22 disabled
Guns lost 6 (2 destroyed, 4 disabled)

Airbase hits 19
Airbase supply hits 21
Runway hits 89
Port hits 3
Port supply hits 1

....we sweep Chunking with a weak Oscar unit but take down 4 better Chinese fighters (Lancer) for no own losses...

... we took Chengtu at the Chinese plains and move to Neikiang from 2 direction. The Chinese SORTY out of Chungking with lots of units (mistake?) and also start 2 offensives in direction Sian and Changteh, we have not so much in these areas and build forts, as well move units from Changsah in direction Changteh (ei. north)..we hit them with air but not much damage done...

..the Australiens take back Normanton and destroy the weak airborne unit there...also they finally show up in direction Tennant Creek, we fail to take the town (only 1 weaker airborne unit). 1 TK and 1 more SNLF on the way to there, but no report how strong the units are the Allies send to re-inforce the area and or take back bases there...if these turn out to be strong ones we must retreat back in dir Katherine, we do not plan to base strong units there...

Allies try to bombard TASSA again with a weaker CL fleet, which was lucky our strong surface fleet there left to bombard and then goes back to Shortlands were fuel and a AKE are located which can re-load up to 40cm guns....but they hit a mine on the way back and did not much damage to base or troops. But they sink 4 good bigger PBs on a fast transport mission to Tassa....

TF 135 encounters mine field at 115,138

Allied Ships
DMS Zane
DMS Hopkins
DMS Hovey
DD Stronghold
DD Witte de With
DD Van Nes
DD Aylwin
CL Helena, Mine hits 1

21 mines cleared

Bombers hit TASSA again severall times, but this time we have a lot of fighters, of course most bombers get through but the damage is now only moderate. Here an example:

Morning Air attack on Tassafaronga , at 113,137

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 34 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 10 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 29
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 20

Allied aircraft
B-25C Mitchell x 3
B-17D Fortress x 3
B-17E Fortress x 15
B-26B Marauder x 4

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 9 damaged
A6M2 Zero: 3 destroyed on ground
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 18 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 3 destroyed on ground

Allied aircraft losses
B-17D Fortress: 2 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 11 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 1 destroyed by flak

Airbase hits 13
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 16

We lose 3 fighters in the air to B17 gunners, and a dozen on the ground during the last attacks. But we also get fragmented US 2E bomber raids and shoot down 7-8 B25s/B26s (incl. OP losses, B17 OP losses reported as 4-5 and 2-3 to A to A)

No attacks the last turn, seems Allied bombers are hurt a bit....

Allied ground troops have reached the TASSA hex but are surprised to find a re-inforced IJ position with a complete div there, they do not dare to attack.

Another PB and small AK lost to at least a dozen US - subs in the south (only the ones that are visible - so it is possible ca. 20 USN SS operate there, luckily it seems the Dutch subs have gone back to base or even sunk!)

... we take Rangoon with bad losses for the Allies:

Ground combat at Rangoon (54,53)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 69130 troops, 870 guns, 605 vehicles, Assault Value = 1816

Defending force 42354 troops, 447 guns, 663 vehicles, Assault Value = 914

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Japanese adjusted assault: 1533

Allied adjusted defense: 429

Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Rangoon !!!

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIb Trop: 9 destroyed
