Big scenarios?

Post by Davekhps »

I will definitely be buying the game soon, so no need to sell me on it, but from reading the forum the past few days, I'm curious: how does the game handle large/long scenarios?

IIRC I saw something about the scenario list that suggested most scenarios lasted only hours. Like many, Harpoon is my benchmark, and there were multi-day scenarios in that game, with multiple CVBGs and plenty of airfields.

Is this kind of scenario too taxing on the game, or does it "scale up" to big fleet actions well? (I've got some ideas for some nasty Taiwan/US/China scenarios that would get huge in a hurry...)

I was just discussing this on another forum. This game is amazing. My disappointment lies only with the scenarios. What is missing are the big NATO v Soviet fleet battles or a US carrier Battle group attacked by Soviet land based craft... Or a China v US fleet battle over Taiwan. There are too many small and limited scenarios. The only US v China scenario is limited on the US side to 2 littoral patrol craft and a destroyer that has no ASMs. The scenarios that come with it seem to be well made, there jus lt aren't a lot of big conventional fights. There is a India v China one that seems decent.

I was hoping for US 6th fleet takes on Russian Black Sea fleet for control of the eastern med...something like that.
I also expected a ton if user made scenarios by now but have seen none except the community pack I got on day 1

I wrote Operation Brass Drum to push the limits of the game on my PC. I'm writing another, even larger scenario now. The thing is, as I see it, that during development many processing efficiencies hadn't been implemented until other core features had been worked out. This made creating and testing VERY LARGE scenarios quite difficult as they crawled along in the test builds at a slow pace. I think the door is now open to building big scenarios now and look forward to seeing the community start to create them.

I am a child of the cold war and to be honest, i was slightly underwhelmed at the 1.0 scenario selection. I hold out hope that as more and more of the community gets on board with this game, we will start seeing the "good ol days" where we had more scenarios than we could play" i know for a fact that with Harpoon Commanders Edition i had a scenario folder with over 300 scenarios gathered from different sources over the years.

And as soon as i get more comfortable with the scenario editor and as Command matures into the great sim it rightfully should be, i hope to make many contributions for scenarios. And one of my favorite time periods to work with is the mid 1980's.

As a small to mid-scale scenario writer, I have to say that I'm still discovering the various tricks of the trade - this ain't Harpoon. And that's a good thing. [:D] I have a lot more flexibility to make things happen, but it takes time to game out and script-write a quality scenario, play test it, figure out what's broken and how to make it work. And along the way, you get more ideas. There are a couple of post 1.0 changes that I'm waiting to see happen, particularly enabling the Conditions aspect of the Event Engine, but that's not stopping me from moving my stuff over from HCE/HU.

Very true! This aint Harpoon, not by a long shot! I have yet to wrap my head around the event engine and i would like to see an advanced mission planner, which i understand is in the pipeline of things to do.

Am also a Cold War guy - got the game on day one and have spent more time with the editor than the game - its good. Will be building a Cold War series when I find the time and the first scenario is probably 1/3 done - its slow because I want to test stuff step by step to gain familiarity with the game. The North Cape of Norway is the setting and the unit count is ~1200.

Brass Drum is fantastic. It is large enough. Imagine a similar number of units/bases but with NATO attacking Soviet positions (or the other way around).
They don't have to be huge. Maybe a US carrier with a cruisers, 3-4 destroyers and a SSN or two vs a similar sized Soviet fleet.

Thats about the size of scenario id like to get going. Not to mention throwing the brits into it. The cold war Royal Navy always fascinated me. Maybe because i remember seeing the 1982 Falklands war in real time on the news.

Who will design the first realistic WW3 scenario ?

- US and France bomb Syria
- Russia arms Syria
- Hezbollah Attacks Israel
- Lebanon is involved
- Israeli provocation at Iran's border
- Iran sends a missile to Israel
- Other Nato countries join US and France against Syria and Iran
- Russia enters the mess
- China joins Russia
- Venezuela joins the coalition and sends missiles to Florida
- Pakistan attacks India
- Terrorism develops everywhere
- Civil wars all around in Africa
Sounds realistic ?

This total mess can be called WW3

This is the scenario I'd like to experiment. On a massive scale.
Any geek to develop it ?

Don't worry, I'm working on it, as are a lot of other people, I'm sure. [:D]
