Realistic star names!

Post by Baleur »

A huge file of realistic / space-sounding names i've used in many 4x games :)
Its just a text file, but because of the ammount of names i decided to upload it to filefront rather than copy and paste a walloftext here [:D]

Place it in "Distant Worlds\Customization\Yournameofchoice" and activate that "theme" ingame, DONT overwrite the original file in the root folder.
http://www.filefront.com/15935653/systems.txt

Examples: "Delta Cassiopeia", "Zeta Reticulii", "Rigel", "Tau Ceti", "Procyon", "Epsilon Serpentis" and some hundred others [:'(]

Now if only someone would be kind to update the ship list to The Empire's, from Star Wars.

They only have so many ports... maybe 20 or so, and they handle a lot of other downloads... so if you get that message it just means that all the ports are being used... so just try again later.

If the file is not huge, it should also be possible to zip it and upload it right here to the forum just FYI.

Hi there,
I put the txt file into the Distant Worlds\Customization\ folder but there is no other theme showing up in the menu, only the default button is available. Something I did wrong?

You need to put it in a folder in the customization folder. I put mine in ../customization/Real Star Names

Not even 900 names...

If you pick a larger galaxy, what would happen? It uses some of the names from the default list? If so I think it might defeat the purpose.

Great list though. I think I'll use it for smaller maps [:)]

Systems without colonizable planets dont get a fancy name anyway, so you wont need 1000 unique names for a 1000 star galaxy :P

There's another download link in post #9, jrhindo. Terl has uploaded it to the matrix server.

Filefront hosts so much stuff, I guess every now and then something goes missing.

FerretStyle:

Don't let the number bother you. You're free to add as many names as you wish (using Notepad or another editor - it's a simple text file).

There are 24 Greek letters and 88 stellar constellations, 2112 combinations in total. Plus proper names like "Sirius" (for "Alpha Canis Majoris" - by the way, that star is also called "Aschere" or "Canigula" by other peoples).

If that's not enough, you can use the Hipparcos catalogue, which contains the positions of more than 118,000 stars (sequentially numbered, no fancy names, I admit, but they do represent real stars!). :-)

Hell yes, astronomy is the stuff of dreams....having them on a map is the second best thing.
