CHS v1.06 Change list....DD's posted

Post by treespider »

Still more little bugs are showing themselves to the world...

CHS v1.06 Change list

1. Target Planning Objectives have been corrected for the Chinese LCU’s

2. Auckland – 15 point Ship Repair yard added

3. Deleted Ships 5427 and 5428. PT Q114 and PT Q115.
Phillipine Off Shore Patrol PT Boats
-Only THREE of these boats were completed:

• Q 111 and Q 112 were slightly different prototypes built in Britain - 8 additional boats ordered were taken over by the British when war began in 1939.
• Q 113 was then ordered as a prototype in the Philippines (to the same design as Q 112) and completed in October, 1941 Following the completion of Q 113, ten additional boats were ordered with expected completion in March, 1942. Plans were made for a follow-on order of 14 more. None of these vessels were ever completed.

4. Adjusted US Seabee units.
Previous Composition: Device 332:US Naval CB Squad -15; Device 251:Engineers – 15
New Composition: Device 332:US Naval CB Squad -5; Device 251:Engineers – 25

As to the SeaBees being combat capable - they were but that was not their primary mission. The Navy created the SeaBees for construction in forward areas. They were an extension of an old idea that was originally part of the "Advanced Base Force" from War Plan Orange. Early war experiences with civilian construction personel getting caught (or almost getting caught) in combat expedited the creation of the SeaBees. These were not specifically combat units but the personal were combat trained and well armed - similar to troops in the army General Service Engineering Regiments. SeaBees experienced some combat at Guadalcanal and some light engagements while constructing airfields, etc on some newly captured (and not quite secured) islands.

5. Removed Escalante R (ship 8565): It was is in fact a 110 Foot coastal craft of 95 GRT. It is listed as a Small AK in Scenario 15 and in CHS. It’s too small to mess and with should be removed.

6. Reclassified Kanlaon II (Ship 8573) is in fact a 181 Foot coastal craft of 477 GRT. It is listed as a Small AK in Scenario 15 and CHS. It should be reclassed as a coaster (class 451).

7. Reclassified Manatawny (ship 8123) is incorrectly classed as a Hog Island Type Freighter in CHS. It is classed as a large tanker in Scenario 15. Originally changed this ship to a freighter based on the appearance of it’s name in the list of Hog Island Freighters and reports that it’s cargo in the Philippines was dynamite. This was an error and is now correctly re-classed to a small tanker (class 391) as it was only 5030 tons.

8. Reclassified Ethel Edwards (ship 8426) is classed as a small AK in CHS and in Scenario 15. With a GRT of only 395 this ship should be reclassed as a coaster (class 451).

9. Reclassified Governor Wright (ship 8430) is classed as a small AK in CHS and in Scenario 15. It was only 496 GRT and also should be a coaster (451).

10. Reduced 25th Gurkha Rifles and 1st Assam Rifles to 36 Infantry, 3 Ind Engineer Squads, 4 3in. Mortars and 44 support.

25th Gurkha Rifles and 1st Assam Rifles:

These formations are brigade-sized formations in CHS (108 infantry squads etc.). Actually they were just battalions and should be reduced in strength accordingly.

1st Assam Rifles was the 1st Battalion of the Assam Regiment and 25th Gurkha Rifles the 25th (garrison) regiment of the "Brigade of Gurkhas" (not part of one of the Gurkha regiments because the "Brigade of Gurkhas" was somewhat special because it did belong neither to the British Army nor to the Indian Army then; in most Indian regiments "25th" battalions were formed as garrison battalions for these regiments. 25th Gurkha Rifles and 1st Assam Rifles (IFIRK called "Assam Regiment" and not "Assam Rifles" then) acted as Army/Corps troops in Burma (25th Gurkha Rifles after
returning from service at the NW frontier).

11. Reposition Following Japanese units: 13th Div- to hex 47, 34
39th Div – 48, 34
18th Bde – 48,34
3rd Div – 49,34

40th Div – 48,36

14th Bde – 48,37

23. Updated us Airgroups at Pearl Harbor. Set all fighters and bombers to Training Level 10 with the exception of the 47th fighter Squadron which was set at Escort cap 20.
The 47th Pursuit Squadron was temporarily based at Haleiwa Field although the pilots took their rest and recreation at Wheeler Field. On 7 December they had to return quickly in order to get airborne. The 47th provided the only really effective airborne resistance to the Japanese that day. Training level 10 was selected as 0 defaulted to 60.

Patrol Groups were set at Naval Search 10 percent. Kingfishers were also set at ASW 10.

25th Gurkha Rifles and 1st Assam Rifles (IFIRK called "Assam Regiment" and not "Assam Rifles" then) acted as Army/Corps troops in Burma (25th Gurkha Rifles after returning from service at the NW frontier).

The change is easy enough. Not to question your knowledge ...but before I make the change...can you provide any documentation to support this? Just would like to have support for when people ask why a certain change was implemented. thanks.

One of the most confusing aspects of British OB is their use of the word "regiment" ... for example .. in the Falkland Islands campaign we can read about the "2nd Parachute Regiment" fighting at Goose Green ... the full name of the unit is the "2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment" .. but Brits like to be confusing ( ha ha ) so they have been using a short-hand nomenclature for centuries ... in the old days .. like Napoleonic times ... a regiment had a depot and a field Battalion ... on occasion a 2nd field Battalion was rasied ... in this case ... the "Cold Stream Guards" ... would have to become the "1st Cold Stream Guards" and the "2nd Cold Stream Guards" ... but they were just 2 Battalions of the CSG .... same thing for the RTR ( Royal Tank Regiment ) this is just one regiment but this one had Dozens of Bns ... all called like 1st RTR ... 2nd RTR ... etc. all were Bns ..though we might think they were called regiments ...

And also, some Gurkha Bns were Brigaded with the Indian Army during WWII .... the complete separation did not happen until after WWII ...

Main source (about Indian formations) is "Loyalty and Honour" by Chris Kempton.

About the British (and Indian) regimental system jwilkerson provided some sources and gave some explanations. As he said, British regiments functioned different from US, German or Japanese regiments. In peacetime, British regiments mostly had two battalions, one stationed overseas and the other at its depot location in the UK. In wartime these regiments raised more battalions. Thus, for example, the Highland Light Infantry (regiment) had numbered its battalions 1st Highland Light Infantry, 2nd HLI and so on. Regiments did not fight together like US regiments, instead three (sometimes more) battalions were grouped into Brigades. Mostly these battalions came from different regiments. For example, 14th Infantry Brigade of 70th British Division had 1st Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, 2nd York and Lancaster and 2nd Blackwatch as its battalions. The term "brigade" as used by the British is somewhat misleading because British brigades had about the same strength as regiments of other nations. But the battalions were not "organic" to the brigades, most battalions were attached to many different brigades during the course of the war.

This worked similar with Indian and other "Commonwealth" units (but Australia and NZ abolished this system to some degree during the war).

To make things even more confusing, the term "brigade" was sometimes used in another context. For example, all Gurkha regiments together formed the "Gurkha Brigade" and all Foot Guards regiments formed the "Brigade of Guards". But this does not mean that they were grouped together into one brigade as a combat formation, the term "brigade" was used due to the somewhat special nature of the Gurkha and Guards regiments compared to other (Indian and British) regiments because both Guards and Gurkha regiments recruited people from various regions (in case of the Gurkhas basically mercenaries) while other regiments were formed from people recruited from a specific geographic region (or in the case of India sometimes ethnic group).

(As a sidenote: There were some brigades that carried the designation Guards Brigade because they were composed solely (or at least mostly) of battalions from Guards regiments; but this had nothing to do with the term "Brigade of Guards")

Forgot one important point about Indian regiments[8D]

Most Indian regiments carried a number before their regimental designation:

1st Punjab, 2nd Punjab, 3rd Madras, 4th Bombay Grenadiers (as regimental names), and so on. Thus battalions of the regiments were then named (for example) 1/1st Punjab Regiment, 3/4th Bombay Grenadiers...

Treespider,

I don't know if you can do this. I'm certainly not one who would know what the results would be.

But, it's always bothered me that one or more of the Dutch CL's don't have upgrades later in the war. I'm pretty sure Java is one. There are probably other's, but I don't know for sure.

Anyway, I wish there was an AA upgrade for Java. Just because she was sunk in early 42 doesn't mean she wouldn't get an AA upgrade later in the war if she were to survive that long.

If you want, I could try to come up with something that I think would be logical. Or maybe one of the Dutch experts could do so as well. (There was a guy who had a lot of stuff on the Dutch, but I don't remember his name. He came up with the PG Soerabaja stats)

Maybe it's not worth it, or maybe there are no more slots for upgrades. Maybe there's a political reason for no upgrade. I don't know. It's just a suggestion.

I don't know if this is intentional or not, but there are still a lot of LCU's and bases with either New Zealand or Australia HQ's. I think any unit with these HQ's should be changed to ANZAC HQ. If a unit has Australia as it's HQ, it is no longer considered restricted. You can load it up just fine. And, bases are cheaper to change if it's Australia or New Zealand, instead of ANZAC.

There is a reson why some bases are Australia Command instead of ANZAC Command. Australian air units that are assigned to ANZAC Command can only rebase to bases that are also part of ANZAC command (which was formerly Australia Command), so to retain these restrictions the bases in the South pacific that were removed from South Pacific Command, such as those in New Caledonia, were added to a "new" Australia Command, instead of ANZAC Command. In this way, it it still not possible for air units assigned to ANZAC Command to fly to these bases without HQ assignment change, with subsequent PP cost.

The change of Australia Command to ANZAC Command was done to free up a restricted HQ (New Zealand Command, renamed to India Command) for use in India.
