RE: Computers
If you live in the UK and want a pre built system then buy from Evesham or Mesh dont bother with anyone else.
OR build your own so you know whats inside.

Its easier than you think.
I made several mistakes with the computer I am using at this very moment (the first one I ever tried to build myself) and these caused delays of up to a month in actualy getting to use the system. Even after all that I am still extremly happy with my system and wouldnt have done it any differently. Plus it cost around 40% less than what I would have paid someone like Alienware or Dell.
Personaly the most difficult part of it for me was hooking up the endless amount of wires pouring from the power supply. But a few hours with the case and mobo manual and you are golden.
RE: Computers
All you need are your hands and a small screwdriver.
It is very very easy. Far easier than you could imagine. The hardest part is installing all the drivers.

RE: Computers
marky, it depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to play the latest and upcoming FPS games (Far Cry, Painkiller, Half-Life 2, Doom 3 etc.) then you need the best components you can afford. However, if you're more into wargames and RTS then this is less of an issue. For what it's worth this is the spec I'm upgrading to:-
ASUS A7NDX nForce2 motherboard with 512mb of Crucial RAM
MSI GeForce FX5900XT graphics card
AMD Athlon XP3200 'Barton' cpu with 400mb fsb
160 Gig Hard Drive
Creative Audigy Platinum sound card
LG 8x DVD Dual R/RW/RAM
Toshiba DVD ROM
Logitech MX500 optical mouse
Logitech Z-640 5.1 speaker system
LG Flatron 1720B TFT monitor
Windows XP Pro
This should see me through the next generation of FPS games at any rate.

RE: Computers
First reality of computers, if you purchased a pre built, you won't suffer in prison for being cute looking, as you already like being taken and abused
Second reality, nothing you buy will be worth more than half it's worth tomorrow. Might as well just get over that.
Basically, your best weapon in buying a "good" purchase, is to locate the nearest 17 year old, and ask him to make you a kicking computer. Explain to him how much money you have, and tell him EXACTLY what the computer must do.
The rest is easy. He builds it you pay the store, you go home and enjoy your new computer.
For those that know a youngun that can never stop upgrading, you imply he might sell you some parts he might have had for all of 3 months for a good deal. You tell him him now is a good time to upgrade, because it will be easy to get the new part he wants if he sells you what he thought three months ago was the best thing under the sun (3 months later it won't be, but that's not your problem).
And let's face it, just about every teen will have a computer that was built for the most graphically intense gaming possible. High power video cards, cool sound cards, latest ram tech, best possible processors.
They won't be using systems to write homework on eh. Their dad's computer is fine for that hehe.
One of my young friends (he's 19) actually heats his room with computers hehe. No he doesn't need 4 computers, they are just "old" computers. Or rather he upgrades so often, he has that many parts sitting around.
His roommate has "boxes" full of parts. After all, you don't throw out the parts, they are just no longer "worth anything".
I have a 500 intell sitting next to me. My friend loaned it to me. It is "junk" to them. Not even good enough to warrant plug in privilege. I use it to play dos games now. Thing is likely to a used store about 200 in parts. But to a teen, just a waste of desk space.
So remember when buying, make sure you have the only thing that counts with you, an opinionated teen that already knows what's cool in your area.

I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

RE: Computers
www.newegg.com
www.zipzoomfly.com
are two excellent sites for parts
The second works better for me because they do not charge me tax
If you really know what your doing and dont care to buy from less than reputable sites
www.pricewatch.com can really save you a ton of money

RE: Computers
No need to build it yourself, but certainly get someone (which can be anyone from a "big" retailer to the guy at your ocal computer store) to build it from specified components. Pay particular attention to your motherboard... that's what the like of Dell tend to skimp on, but a GOOD one can make a very noticable difference (more than the premium than you would pay for the just-released latest-and-greatest processor) in speed and reliability.
Make sure you get the full size case (with fan to match) too. Your machine will stay cooler, and sooner or later you'll want those expansion slots.

RE: Computers
I just bought an alienware and LOVE it. But of course, I've been saving for quite some time. My last computer was an HP and served me right for 4 years of hard use. I went with alienware because, a) I had the money, b) I've always wanted a top of the line machine (that lasted I believe until the day they shipped it, but hey it's still good for another year or two without upgrading since I don't play too many FPSers), and c) I know they leave plenty of room for upgrading and I plan on using this one to learn more about doing it myself so I can build my next one. With my old computer I upgraded the RAM myself. I know many of you are laughing, but even that is scary when you haven't done anything before. It was very simple and gave me a lot of confidence, and was a lot of fun, ie. it gave me a satisfaction doing it myself that I wouldn't get from paying for it. So, in a year or so I plan on upgrading my baby myself and learning how to do it right.
Bottom line, go with what you want. Store bought/boutique built computers are fine, just realize you'll pay more. Also, make sure you have room for upgrading. I can't tell you how much $70 in RAM improved my computer. I'm sure it's the same with video cards, etc. when you do them.
