Pre-Damage?

Post by Juramentado »

Folks,

Is there a way to pre-damage a unit in the SE? I am interested in creating an "escort a cripple" type of scenario.

Thanks!

Sorry, something like that is just not possible.  The only way that might happen is to edit a database and create a 'damaged unit' for inclusion that is missing sensors and has a reduced number of damage points, speed, etc.

No worries.  Just FYI, but this kind of thing can be tried in H3/ANW.  You would set up your scenario, run it a bit, attack the ship with something to inflict damage, then re-set everything with the Scenario Editor before publishing it for others to try.

This is a dicey and imprecise procedure.  You cannot control exactly what weapon systems are hit, how much damage is done, fire, flotation damage, etc.  It can also cause other problems in the long run.  I suspect that is the primary reason why it hasn't been done much in H3/ANW, either.  Just too many potentially bad side-effects.

Could you start with the ship grounded?
You'd have the added fun (?) of getting it refloated.

If there were enough call for it, I'd be willing to create an entry in the HCE database that simulated a damaged or crippled ship, but it would of course only be a generic representation.

Don's suggestion could work decently well, though one would have to be careful not to 'ground' the ship too badly. The effort to refloat can be frustrating and would impinge on game time.

Interesting and novel idea!

You would have to leave a note in the orders requiring the player to not play with the "Ignore land" setting. Also, does grounding damage weapons and sensors? I think it might be a bit to unpredictable and imprecise in that you could not specify 20% damage or max speed of 10kts

Hi Brad!

That would be perfect. I know I'm already invoking scope creep, but would it be possible to give us two generic representations? One would have Large radar profile and the other Small?

Okay, make your request and further thoughts known in the appropriate thread over at HarpGamer, and we'll flesh it out.
