Any life here?

Post by Nimrod 9th »

Wow, talk about a dead forum. Anyone still playing this game? I'm interested in a strategic Pacific WWII game.
W in the P Adm Add is too deep and complex for my taste. Anyone able to give this a "good to go" or "look elsewhere"?
If not this game then what? I have Pacific War Plan and enjoy it but want something a little deeper but not as deep as
W in the P Adm Add. Oh, I noted a possible Win 8 and Win 10 issue. I'm still running Win 7. Thanks people!!

98% will work with windows 10 without a issue as long as a few things are done before hand, if you follow any of my guides and maybe just alter it to suit a given game, then they will work, not always in full screen but windowed sometimes and maybe compatibility mode used, but works all the same, with only a few simple things needed and added, the main one as always in the pre requisites than always need installing, then always run the install as admin, from a admin account, and do the same with the game updates, and alter the shortcut as shown in any of my posts, then 9 out of 10 times it works, for some a odd extra bit is needed i've found, but always shown in the guides, as yet i've only had one that really wouldn't or didn't like windows 10, and i've done more than a few now

I play it on occasion. I'd like to play PBEM if anyone is up for it. I would want to use my 'mini air and naval mod,' see the mod sub-forum here.

I'll give it one more try. Only two responses and both had nothing to do with the original question. So, I going to take the silence to mean this isn't much of a game and I should look elsewhere.

Sorry my response was not direct to the point. Yes, the game is good to go. I've played it since playtesting time and have been involved in some modding. Look in the mod and AAR threads, going back several years for other info.

Same game engine as Time of Fury, which in my opinion is the best European Theater game available. Also same game engine as Strategic War in Europe.

Thanks gwgardner ... I'm familiar with SWiE. Despite its issues I still play it. Like the engine and size. Unfortunately the developer gave up on it a patch or two early. Still has some rough edges. ToF is a little too large and the AI doesn't seem as good as SWiE. Anyway, still have some time to think on Storm Over the Pacific before the sale ends. The silence in the forum does have me a little concerned. There are so few games out there on this subject and level. If this was one of the better ones shouldn't there still be some traffic here?

You hit the nail on the head - Wastelands has had a bad pattern of dropping long-term support. It has soured many players over time, knowing that bug fixes or improvements will not be forthcoming. There was a problem with CTDs for some players in SoP.

SoP is bigger overall than ToF, so maybe indeed it is not what you are looking for. ToF is perfect for me in size and scope.

Interesting. I'm a recent purchaser of Time of Fury (I've just discovered I already own Time of Wrath [:)] - who knew. Never played it but there it was)
I've been playing ToF and thinking this would make a good port to the Pacific. Like the OP WITP seems too much like a lifetime's commitment and SoP seemed like a good fit.

Wastelands also appears to have a habit of producing a "brand-new" game with a new name that's a bit of rinse-and-repeat of the previous iteration - albeit with enanced features.

The tutorial for ToF, for example, still starts off with "Welcome to the Strategic War in Europe..."

Now, I don't have a problem with paying for new versions of an existing game engine; I'm still playing TOAW III and I'll be buying TOAW IV. Owning Highway to the Reich didn't stop me buying Command Ops.

All of these SWiE games seems to have had issues - in particular CTDs that remain unresolved to this day. If they're the same game engine, they are likely the same problem.

Matrix/Slitherine aren't painting themselves in glory here. They're still selling these games which are totally unsupported by the original Devs who have renamed the game and moved on.

Edit: What concerns me most about the last point is that there is no "caveat emptor". That is, you can buy this but please be aware of the following issues. I did a lot of forum research before I bought ToF so I already knew what I was getting myself into.
