Unable to claim Bearn

Post by jjdenver »

Somehow USA is unable to take Bearn even though the pre-reqs are met. Paris is held by France. No options chosen yet this turn. Here is screenshot & file. Can anyone suggest a fix or workaround?

I think this is due to the fact that the name of the ship is B arn. The name of the ship has been changed.
The only way to correct this is to go back to a phase where France could use units, change the name back to the right spelling and see what happens next.

If that is the problem, once could also edit a save file to get the name correct.

Does Bearn have a funny "e" character? I searched in an old file from another game and don't find "Bearn" - what should it be changed to? Maybe someone edited the game file earlier in the game and had an editor that didn't preserve special characters?

If that is the reason, that the name is written with "stress mark": "Béarn" , and maybe your computer does not understand the "é" character or some edition has autocorrected it. If your keyboard doesnt have prosodic accent, you can copy the name from this post, to edit the file.

In my computer i can see it with it's complete name, not "B arn", which BTW sounds rather detrimental, LOL.

(1) I use Notepad ++ to edit and select ANSI (under the Encoding tab).
(2) This preserves the accent over the e.

(3) As opposed to the default (UTF-8).

(4) If you did rename the Bearn I might suggest that you copy the "name" from an old game file (any game file) in which it wasn't renamed and the copy the name over the one in your current game file. IMPORTANT - with ANSI encoding select for both files.

Thank you Jose & Ronnie for the informative answers. I think this is the problem. Someone edited the file with an editor that doesn't preserve the e.

I took a look at one of my save files, and discovered that at some point my editor had eaten Bearn's e. I have been using Windows Notepad. Fortunately the US had already claimed the Bearn that point.

I suspect I will switch to Notepad++.

You want the most vanilla text editor possible. I would use Notepad. Maybe you meant Windows Wordpad. That and Notepad++ are not vanilla enough.

Windows Notepad is the only editor I have been using. It is the editor that ate Bearn's 'e'.

I checked a number of files that I've edited with Notepad and they did not destroy the name of the Bearn, inclusive of the accent. Maybe this is what happened:

Besides all that, the hypothesis that the problem here is related to the name of the ship is, IMO, a quest for wild aquatic fowl.

MWiF allows the user to change the name of the units. It is in the unit menu under "Rename". What programmer worth his salt is going to implement code that is based on a variable that the user can modify?

Instead the unit number 27904 would have been used (although that too could be changed in Notepad, no doubt at the risk of even greater peril).

Just proved the hypothesis true. It was the name.

Doesn't satisfy the prerequisites of US entry option 4.

Does satisfy.

The only difference is that the unit name EXACTLY matches the name under the Prerequisites.
