The Chateau at Lion-sur-Mer

Post by lollipops »

Once again, this one went right down to the wire and had me on the edge of my seat. This seems to be becoming a habit.

This is the initial plan.

It started quite well. I managed to find a way to skirt around the very bottom of the map with only one(or maybe two) hex(es) within view and range of the enemy. I lost a full squad I think if I remember correctly and I think I had one reduced to a half-squad too, but given the amount of movement I initiated it was relatively successful I think. I ended up pretty much in the position I wanted to be in by now.

You'll notice the smoke I hope! This is the very first time I've had smoke available to me in all the scenarios I've played I think. This game really does remind me of 'Squad Leader' in a lot of ways, but I'd like to see more smoke available in these scenarios. Most of them seem to have the attacker having to navigate open ground at some point and smoke really is the missing element in a lot of cases. Anyway, I enjoyed the smoke here.

At this point I realised I'd made a mistake with my MG unit in that even though I'd counted the hexes to the enemy, I hadn't taken enough notice of hindrances. I'm assuming the reason I wasn't able to fire is due to that. I know if there are more than two hinderances then it's classed as blocked? Is that right? Or am I thinking of a different game?

Anyway, here's what I'm referring to.

Whatever the reason, I couldn't fire upon those units there which just added to my worries about whether or not I was going to be able to bring enough firepower to bear upon them. Of course, there was no guarantee they would have done any damage anyway, but still, it was an extra worry at the time that stopped me dead in my tracks and had me wondering if I could/needed to re-plan things.

I'll end this post here due to the 4 screenshot limit and post the final part of the battle in a separate post.

We're on turn 4 of 5 now and things are on a knife edge. The enemy has something like 14 Firepower in that last Objective and I only just have the edge on them and that's if I can move in without being shot to hell. My heart is racing at this point. I honestly thought it could go either way.

Suffice to say, it worked out for me, but might just as easily not have done.

As you can see from that final screenshot, the Assault worked, but only at a 1:1 ratio. I rolled low-ish. Something like a 5 I think. Anyway, whatever it was I prevailed and my countrymen proved themselves to be the top-notch troops we all new them to be.

But my word.... This is doing nothing for my poor nerves!

Edit: Forgot to mention the smoke. There was smoke 'again'. Please give us more smoke. We like smoke...

... And I've just noticed that MG's line of sight looks to be just tipping that forest hex. Don't know why I didn't see it before. That explains that then :D
