Going back to my original issue with the use of units stashed in other OOBs.. They pick up that countries characteristics.

The mix and match that you all say "can do" ignores this little fact!

Good point. I don't have to deal with that fact most of the time as I tend to play just Italians and they suck all the time. [;)]

As for Matrix making the OOBs bigger, to be honest they are a business. and if people don't make the appropiate noises in the past then they, MG, would not spend time on doing it.

But they've pretty much said that they are finished developing the product so I wouldn't hold your breath. Mike Wood's mech.exe changes were made out of the goodness of his heart, I believe, so we were fortunate to get that.

As for dealing with the "odd" units that are curently in the OOBs, I would have thought the first big move would have been to standaise them a bit with respect to their atributes, armour, weapons crew, etc. Not to mention the various ranges that exist for the same weapon in different OOBs. and other similar oddities.

That is pretty much what has been going on with the OOB project over at the Depot. Why Matrix didn't correct the inconsistencies in previous releases is beyond me. I've heard, although I've never verified it personally, that the Sherman is a good example of dissimilar attributes between OOBs, which is unfortunate given it was such a key piece of equipment.

Yes there are some vehicles that did not get going. But the war did not go on to 1949 either.

The OOB teams of the 8.0 series engaged in a lot of teeth-gnashing over the lack of slots, but this would require a MAJOR code reworking, and also could play havoc with pre-existing scenarios/campaigns.

Even under the present restrictions, a comprehensive reworking of the OOB database is a long-term project, as the Depot membership has come to realize.

I spent the majority of my time working on just the USMC OOB, but I am STILL making periodic tweaks to it, as more complete information is made available.

If I had my "druthers", we would have two German OOBs--one for the 1939-42 period, and the other for 1943-45. Unfortunately, I don't ever see this happening.

IB...have you looked at Mau Foxes Italian OOB mod??
Im sure the Italians are much more realistic in it.
I know it is included in the Depot Multi Mod...Not sure if he posted it as a single oob mod or not.

You make some interesting point on this

True any changes to the OOB size might have an effect on the existing scenarios/campaigns, espicially if extra units were added.

The fact that there is a rework on existing OOBs by the Depot can also have the same efffect if that rework is to be for general play, ie person vs AI. PEBM playy may not have the same problems. This comes back to teh issue of dropping the "odd/not rerally off the drawing board" type unit, naval guns, certain air support etc.

You comments re a rehack of the OOB is true, it will take a long time and needs some very careful planning.

Your comment s of split OOBs probably makes more sence than it sounds. ther will be problems with some things but for long campaigns that span the jump there may be some problems here.

It is a concept that should have more thought applie to it.

Hey Alby.

Funny you should mention the Italian OOB project over at the Depot. Mau spearheaded that project, but Elibolas and myself were the other main contributors to the Italian OOB. We spent a *lot* of time reviewing, revising, and cross-checking the information of one another. And yes, the Italians are much more historically accurate as part of that OOB revision than they were with the Matrix release. It currently is by no means perfect, but it is better and more realistic (and the Italians are worse off now in game terms because of it, I believe). However, in our ambitiousness to get things right, I think we went farther than Flash intended us to with this OOB revision. In particular, the SMV M41 90/53 discussion generated some controversy far beyond just the Italian OOB.

I have downloaded both your multimod and Mau's single OOB on my different machines. I must admit your multimod was easier to install. I'd encourage anyone who hasn't downloaded it to give it a try. It is easy to uninstall if you don't like it.
