Eastern Front 1941-1945 V8.1 for TOAWIV 12/2023
Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
Improved Soviet colors. Based on uniforms and vehicles.
10 instead of 5 co-operative base (main) ID colors would be huge. The Soviet air is color ID 21 and I re-colored to the blue of their plane undercarriage, but it is also then the Stavka HQ color, which is okay... but it also then becomes the Leningrad and Bryansk Front colors. Scenario designers end up with some odd color ID sharing. After I recolored Russo German War, the German Navy also ended up colored Panzer rose... Ahoy indeed.- Attachments

and for the ign..reluctant modders like me ..where should the alt file go?
Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
To download and use; (not to be didactic because the how-tos are all over the forum, and you already know...);
- it needs to be uploaded and unzipped and renamed exactly like the scenario sce. file
- and put in a folder named exactly like the .sce file
- and that folder is set/put up in the folder that the .sce file is in
- And the folder holding the .sce and the new EF folder should be in your Documents folder - which may not be the drive you installed the game... (and I don't know how this is done if you run it on Steam)
- and in this case the folder and the .col file both get named; Eastern Front 1941-1945.v6

Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
What a well-thought-out scenario! Really enjoying it. The disbanding Reserve units and the attrition sink pieces are really innovative solutions.
I'm always tired of Leningrad falling so fast, so I shifted the Bryansk Front to muster north of the Kalinin Front, and the Kalinin Front covers the Vitebsk-Smolensk land bridge.
And it would seem Guderian sensed the opening between the Western Front and the Southwest Front still holding in at Kiev because here comes the reinforced 2nd PzGruppe right where the Bryansk Front would be... I finally got around to re-coloring the Finns and tinkered a bit with the existing. I'll post the update soon

Governato, what is the difference between the Reserve Armies and the Levys/Reinforcement units? I am disbanding the Levys/Reinforcement units when they arrive, but wasn't sure about the Reserve Armies - they actually have movement and an HQ - and I'm treating them, and the Sapper Armies, like an on-screen Assigned holding tank but not sure when to disband them. The Sapper Armies go around fixing bridges and digging trenches but I'm not sure what role the Reserve Armies fill.
I understand the Reinforcement unit purpose - and if you created that idea, it's brilliant. Maybe I'm just missing the subtle difference between the two types.
Adding this a bit later - what do you do with the cadre units? I thought when you disband an Early Army it returns later as the Late Army?

If you're STILL making Panzer IIs after seeing your first T-34... you're probably going to lose.

- Reserve and Sapper Armies were actually fielded formations that were mostly used for digging and training. They are somewhat useful in the defence if you are hard pressed, as they were before being disbanded or turned in combat capable units. I usually use them to dig around the Volga/Stalingrad area disband them gradually in Summer 1942. They contain a LOT of construction squads which you eventually want assigned to frontline units.
- the Levy/Reinforcement units did NOT correspond to actual units, just reinforcements coming from the East regions or Lend Lease ports. They need to be disbanded. In 1944 an later some appear in Moscow or Ukrainie, meaning that the Red Army needs to control those location to access the manpower. These disbandments complement
the more regular/smooth reinforcement/replacement system and add a strong historical seasonality to the campaign and the arrival of various weapons.
Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
I took Berlin on turn 100. Awesome game. I've played deep into Russo German War and this has a similar feel but is time manageable. Well done, Governato. I understand the purpose of the seasonal levy units - very creative solution.
See notes below - Notes I made at the end
- Still confused by Reserve Armies and Cadre rolls. The appearing cadre units had something to do with bullet point 4?
- Near the end of the scenario I moved HQs in a pack to speed up moving the rail line forward (you can see in the screenshot next to the supply unit). That made the final push over the Oder doable.
- Had a Slovak unit and a Security battalion in the German Attritional losses box at the end.
- bug? A 3-divided Army would not return the eliminated Corp (The 50th Army and one other) and the formation report did not list the remaining two's deployment
- The Black Sea Fleet unit was in a naval dual with the Romanian 3rd Army HQ off the mouth of the Danube (?!)
I "cheated" - the first turn - Human+2 Weak, then turn 2-5 Human+1 Moderate, then None & Strong thereafter - I am not losing WW2 in my first go-round....
I saved the turn 100 SAL if that would help about the non-returning Corps issue.

First things first: Glad you enjoyed the game and and tx compliments and the useful questions! Please send me a sal file to the email in the scenario description!
here is some answers.
- Still confused by Reserve Armies and Cadre rolls. The appearing cadre units had something to do with bullet point 4?
Cadre units contain irregular squads and low calibre artillery, they represents the many low quality divisional level units left decimated after the Summer battles which *regrouped at the front* . They allow the Red Army to form a continous (if fragile) frontline. Use them in defense and hope for the best. They should only appear when they parent army has been completely destroyed...
- Near the end of the scenario I moved HQs in a pack to speed up moving the rail line forward (you can see in the screenshot next to the supply unit). That made the final push over the Oder doable.
Umm a little gamey but then you lost the HQ supply bonuses so maybe things evened out. It'd not work in HvH were large breakthroughs vs a competent opponent only happen later in the game. So I think it's fine within the limitations of TOAWS logistics.
- Had a Slovak unit and a Security battalion in the German Attritional losses box at the end. Will check with your save file but likely the designated hex for the units to return was enemy occupied. So that works to the same effect .
- bug? A 3-divided Army would not return the eliminated Corp (The 50th Army and one other) and the formation report did not list the remaining two's deployment Will check, was it a unit that does reconstitute? was the return hex enemy occupied? Maybe not enough squads? I noticed the "not showing deployment" myself..I think it's a separate TOAW bug.
- The Black Sea Fleet unit was in a naval dual with the Romanian 3rd Army HQ off the mouth of the Danube (?!)
You mean the HQ was embarked? Crazy AI...Need to see the sal file!
I "cheated" - the first turn - Human+2 Weak, then turn 2-5 Human+1 Moderate, then None & Strong thereafter - I am not losing WW2 in my first go-round....
and you still finished ONLY by turn 100? Poor AI did better than I thought possible. Try a human next time .
Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
SAL sent.
Only one rail repair slows down an overall advance... First it went south to supply the Bucharest advance - then to catch up to the advance into Poland and Germany; that railhead was still waaay back. Hence my use of the three HQs to speed it up.
I'm not sure I'm good at maximizing my resources/capabilities as a player- and that's why I enjoy TOAW - much to learn.
Thanks.

Eastern Front 1941-1945 V7 is in the works
Putting the finishing touches to Version 7.
If you have any end of turn for any side (human or vs Po, please send/PM them to me. They are very useful to estimate the balance of replacements, especially for Logistics related squads (horses, trucks, Ferry Bridging teams, construction squads etc etc).
Will post an update with planned changes soon and V7 probably within 3 weeks.

Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
If I recall correctly the equipment file is now saved with the scenario and it's no longer necessary to have it in the Graphics Override folder.

This is not correct for the current version, if it ever was [it was discussed, but probably never implemented].

So if I download someone's scenario that was made with TOAWIV and it has modified equipment I have to download the equipment file also and put it in the Graphics Override folder just like I used to with TOAWIII?

Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
Yes, but the scenario designer should include the modified or used database file in the graphics override folder for that scenario.
As far as I know with TOAW IV (the current released version) its always been like this. If the scenario designer does not include the database file the scenario will use the wrong intended database file and the scenario will not function as designed. The database is saved separately from the scenario file and must be distributed with the scenario file.
This goes back to ACOW.

Re: RE: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V5 for TOAWIV
We clarified this issue when V6 came out. As Curtis had confirmed in the above post it is not necessary to include a non standard eqp file with a scenario (with the exception of when a scenario is first saved by the developer)Curtis Lemay wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 1:07 pmI include them, but they are no longer necessary to include. The game saves them in the scenario file.ORIGINAL: Zovs
For reference look at FITE2 or one of Lemays (aka Bob) Civil War scenarios. They have custom equipment files attached in their Graphic Override folders.
I am not sure about the experience other developers had, but that has certainly correct for EF since I ported it to TAOW4
You are welcome to test this downloading version 6 and soon version 7.
If anybody has some end of file turns with V6, please PM as they are useful to evaluate the long term balance of the scenario.

Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
It has been my understanding that you do not need to include the modified equipment file with a scenario because it is saved with the scenario now. If you want to extract the modified equipment file you press F11 while having the scenario in the editor. But now with people saying no that isn't the case and othes saying yeah that's how it works it's become a confusing mess.

Re: Eastern Front 1941-1945 V6 for TOAWIV 9/2021
EF for TOAWIV does not need to include a separate eqp file since version 4, which came out in 2018? Honestly I forgot. Instead the equipment database specific for EF 41-45 is embedded in the scenario file. Not really sure why people are suddenly confused about it.
If one has doubts I encourage them to download the scenario and try it. It's fun, promise. One should find the included pdf or the notes at the top of this thread useful.
I will let this discussion quiet down and post some notes on the changes for version 7 in a few days.
If people has general questions on the use of equipment files please PM me or post it on a separate thread.
Btw, here is how the the Axis inventory page looks like in EF.
