Did B17s/B24s and B25s/B26s ever carry or have the capability to carry 1,000lb bombs? (obviously they had the lift capacity..)

Gotta question - and I KNOW some of you have the answer...

So, if I have LBs on an anti ship mission - and in normal range - will they carry the 1,000lbrs?
Can it be set up that way in the DB?

The 1000# bomb load is coded somewhere. It's based on a coded date, and probably an exp rating (altho I'm not sure).
You -could- set something up in the DB, but then it would always be static, and would then be affected by whatever code over-rides have been put into place. For example -
In the DB, you could code B-17s to carry 8x 1000# GP bombs for "normal" range. I think it halves the bombload for extended range (you don't actually enter anything in the DB for extended range), so for extended range, they would attack with 4x 1000# GP bombs. All of your B-17s would always carry that loadout (never 500# GP bombs), for -all- missions, not just anti-shipping.

It depends on who you ask...

But seriously, shipping aside, does one 1000lbr droped on land do more damage than two 500lbrs?[&:]

AFAIK, default loads shown are used only against ships (like 4 x 500 lbs etc.). Against land targets load value is used which is more abstract. I can be mistaken, but I'm sure someone will correct me.

I was also reading that the B-26s at Midway were armed with torps. Certainly not the usual ordinance package for them (and not available in WitP). Not saying they should in WitP by the way. But I think I'll change it in my Midway scenario.

Hmm, if that is correct...then there would be no difference when attacking land targets - just anti-shipping.

So this raises a good question:
1) Are bomb load outs just used for anti shipping, therefore -
2) Is land bombardment handled in a different manner...independant of the size of individual bombs? - In other words, when bombing a land target 10,000lbs of payload has the same effect no matter how it was delivered (40x 250lbrs, 10x 1,000lbrs, 20x 500lbrs)
Enquireing minds would really like to know..[&:]

1) bomb loadouts are used for anti-ship. bomb load values are used against land targets. For both types you only have normal and extended values. The game cannot account for the myriad of loadouts bombers were capable of handling based on mission, distance and ordinance availability at the time.

I learned something new today. Can I go home now?
Nik, how then does it compute the hits on ships in port, if it's using load value? Obviously, it's using the default load to -some- degree, when it attacks in port, because we see the message that indicates a ship was was hit by a specific bomb type, penetration, etc.
Serious question, not giving you a hard time (this time [;)]).
