Level Bombers

Gotta question - and I KNOW some of you have the answer...

Did B17s/B24s and B25s/B26s ever carry or have the capability to carry 1,000lb bombs? (obviously they had the lift capacity..)

Yes.

I think there's a random chance that they carry 1000# GP after July '42. Not sure of the date tho.

I was also reading that the B-26s at Midway were armed with torps. Certainly not the usual ordinance package for them (and not available in WitP). Not saying they should in WitP by the way. But I think I'll change it in my Midway scenario.

IRL..., Hell Yes. They also carried 2,000 lb bombs. In the game, who knows? I'm told they do on occasion, but I haven't seen it yet.

Yes they carry even 2000 lb GP bombs after a certain date (43?). First they carried 2000lb AP bombs [X(][X(] but that was changed into 2000 lb GP bombs. Don´t know what they penetrate though. Don´t know if exp. is a factor too but I think so.

So, if I have LBs on an anti ship mission - and in normal range - will they carry the 1,000lbrs?
Can it be set up that way in the DB?

I see it all the time against the AI. Just when you think that all your 500 lb.'rs are gonna bounce off of the jap cruisers and then WHAM a couple of 1000 lb. bombs really brighten up your day.[8D] I especially like the sound effect when the smaller bombs bounce off. Definately lets you know how your doing.

The 1000# bomb load is coded somewhere. It's based on a coded date, and probably an exp rating (altho I'm not sure).

You -could- set something up in the DB, but then it would always be static, and would then be affected by whatever code over-rides have been put into place. For example -

In the DB, you could code B-17s to carry 8x 1000# GP bombs for "normal" range. I think it halves the bombload for extended range (you don't actually enter anything in the DB for extended range), so for extended range, they would attack with 4x 1000# GP bombs. All of your B-17s would always carry that loadout (never 500# GP bombs), for -all- missions, not just anti-shipping.

I'm thinking - would that be a 'Bad' thing?

But seriously, shipping aside, does one 1000lbr droped on land do more damage than two 500lbrs?[&:]

AFAIK, default loads shown are used only against ships (like 4 x 500 lbs etc.). Against land targets load value is used which is more abstract. I can be mistaken, but I'm sure someone will correct me.

Hmm, if that is correct...then there would be no difference when attacking land targets - just anti-shipping.

B-26A could carry torpedoes (and did so at Midway), 139 build, but they did not work well in that role.

So this raises a good question:
1) Are bomb load outs just used for anti shipping, therefore -
2) Is land bombardment handled in a different manner...independant of the size of individual bombs? - In other words, when bombing a land target 10,000lbs of payload has the same effect no matter how it was delivered (40x 250lbrs, 10x 1,000lbrs, 20x 500lbrs)

Enquireing minds would really like to know..[&:]

B-17's could carry a bewildering variety of ordinance types and numbers....from bomblets all the way up to 2000lb GP bombs. (and before that old argument gets started....i found one.....and ONE only wartime mission where 17's attacked with 2000lb bombs (and it wasn't midway....as Chiting once claimed long ago))

1) bomb loadouts are used for anti-ship. bomb load values are used against land targets. For both types you only have normal and extended values. The game cannot account for the myriad of loadouts bombers were capable of handling based on mission, distance and ordinance availability at the time.

I learned something new today. Can I go home now?

Nik, how then does it compute the hits on ships in port, if it's using load value? Obviously, it's using the default load to -some- degree, when it attacks in port, because we see the message that indicates a ship was was hit by a specific bomb type, penetration, etc.

Serious question, not giving you a hard time (this time [;)]).

Hmm, this stirs the soul...

After all this time fearing torpedo carrying Sallys and Bettys - now the IJN would also have to beware B-25s and B-26s carrying 1000lbrs...tit for tat.

Could give the game a whole new dimension...

yeah sure.....you know i only read captions, and here you ask me complicated questions.....[:D]

I'm not sure to be honest as I don't have the code to look at (and even if i did.....i'd be going "Darrrrrrr.......math?") I think and maybe Frag can confirm this or not, that when the routine goes into the warship attack subroutine during a port mission that it may indeed use the loadout as this is "anti-ship" which also activates the hardcoded anti-ship ordinances such as device 209 (800kg) and the torpedo loadouts. Port and airfield facilities though use the bomb load value . In my mod for example, i halved the bomb loadouts of the heavies and did notice the difference at sea in terms of hits scored....however the heavies are just as effective when attacking a base in terms of average hits. (left the bomb load value alone)

really a Mike Wood question....

Check out the Mosquito B.XXVI (155)[X(] It's got only one device as load but it's a 4000 lb GP bomb.

Has anyone seen it hit anything (like a ship)?
