New Scenario - First Crossing for testing

Post by vettim89 »

This is a Scenario based on the first crossing of the Atlantic by USS Pharris escorting a small convoy in Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising. The scenario is playable from either side but is probably more fun as the Soviet Player. Comments welcomed and expected.

BTW: it is a VERY long scenario. If you play as the Sovs, pay attention to your diesel subs' battery state

Very good scenario. As good as the book.

I enjoyed the details of the units and the difficulty presented.

Thanks. It took a lot of research to find actually names of active Merchants to use. Did you play Nato or USSR side? Its a tough row to hoe for the Sovs. I played it several times and got wiped once and did well once. One thing I was considering was lowering the points for the Soviet subs. It would make a victory by the USSR a little easier.

Hello vettim

I like playing with NATO side.

I played once and made it to Brest. But one very smart commie submarine entered in the middle of the convoy and caused a mess without end. The red sub scored four merchants before being killed.

Then I played again and took a course below the island of Azores. I cheated, I know. But I made it intact to France.

It is a good scenario. I liked it. I try the Red side now. I want to see how badass I can be with the red asses.

Ah, the Kobiashi Maru solution. Initially I had the scenario time set short enough that you could not do that. The problem I ran into is that when playing the USSR side the AI had a problem if a NATO ship was damaged and the whole convoy slowed down enough so that the arrival time was impossible to meet. Have to work on this problem a bit

Fun so far....

*spoiler*
Romeo showed up close in and my helo was down and the nearest helo was down to 20min fuel...P-3 was on the way...

I was creeping and just off a sprint....so I waited a few min and he started to fade..he was direct path with the hull sonar above the layer so I BOL'd an ASROC to spook him....

ASROC hit and began circling and a few seconds later he kicks it..he is between me an the ASROC...the second 'ROC dropped on his head..... scratch one sub..

Now turned back to heading 079...and waiting....

Ok..easier from the NATO side that's for sure...

Tried the Russian side and was not having any luck trying to get in close...helos and P3s had it well covered.

Finally tried it another way and made a "wolfpack" Russian subs near the mid-atlantic.. with the Echos N and S and Charlies in the middle with the other boats out in a picket line.
RORSAT showed just a VictorII got passive contacts..and launched as many torps as she could....ended up killing ~9 merchies and all the escorts but one FFG...but the P3s still ate me alive.

I crippled the convoy LEAD and after the first torp attack the convoy reformed on her at a whopping 1 knot.... not sure if there is a way for the AI to kick out cripples...

Also another thought...maybe allow the USSR to have a Backfire strike (one) of 9-12 aircraft with AS-4s ..that could help thin the escorts back..
