help on fuel usage

Post by Joel Billings »

We're working on a project now that requires us to come up with a formula for how much fuel is used at varying speeds by different ships. We'd like to use the basic database in WitP, and than perhaps by ship class, devise some simple formula (or formulas) to determine fuel used per hour for cruising at different speeds. We may have had such a formula in WitP, but Gary's forgotten it. If anyone from the WitP AE team can point us to such a formula that would be great. In the absence of that, if there's someone here that knows enough about this subject to be able to help us out, please contact us at 2by3@2by3games.com or PM me. Thanks.

Not sure you can capture all the variables - like the ship's length to width ratio, or its draught (and its change depending on cargo weight), or the effect of boilers overdue for a cleaning, or plowing though "severe storms".
I am content with the current abstraction (less need to monitor fuel states every turn). But if you forge ahead on the idea I wish you fair winds and friendly seas!

Since WITP only has few speeds it use (cruise, full power and probably something in between) I doubt there is a full formula for the fuel consumption on different speeds. Just a couple coefficients

Formulas are kind of hyperbolic:

There is a good article about this topic by Jon Parshall on his Combined Fleet homepage:

Just curiosity.

If the formulas are in WitP code, why not to look into it.

Are you (2by3), not the owner of the code anymore?

While Gary still theoretically has the WitP code, it's not easy for Gary to get it up and running and then find the right code in all the thousands of lines of code since he's not looked at it in 15 years. Not even clear if Gary has stored and/or migrated the source code through his last 4-5 computers that he's owned during that time.

That is one of those very practical issues that I do not think about. The amount of code he has been responsible for over the years has got to be immense.
