windows11 update doing strange things to some matrix games?

Post by Agathosdaimon »

Hi, i am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
After a recent windows11 update, now when i try to run a few of the matrix titles such as John Tillers Civil War Battlegrounds, and Napoleonic Wars, and Combat Command - they refuse to start and have an error message that the serial number could not be validated

if i though reinstall the games i think that resolves teh issue, but why would an update cause this issue in the first place - also its not the case that one needs to be connected to the internet to use a serial key do they ? that is, one can install matrix games titles offline still yes?

I have had weird stuff with Win11 updates and Matrix games before. Also WIn11 updates screw with audio and recording software settings a lot times.

I have 6 computers with two that are Win11 installed.
I kept my main gaming machine with Win10 and rarely have issues with my games on that machine.

Only solution I have found to eliminate these aggravations is not 'so-called' upgrading my gaming machine to 11. 😈

i unfortunately had no choice - i cant afford 6 different computers and my existing one died, and of course buying a new gaming laptop means they all have windows11 on them now.

So far though i havent had too serious of issues getting old games running, - however now due to changes by microsoft, nvidia and intel, slowly eliminating support for anything older than directx9 (and even directx9 is being withdrawn) the real workhorses now for older games are virtual OS's , and also directx/glide wrappers - in particular Dgvoodoo, Dxwnd, and Ddrawcompat. With these three wrappers i have gotten almost every old game i had running in windows10 also workingi n windows11.
The old Janes simulations though like F/a-18 and Longbow2 continue to present problems. yet older ones like F/A-18 Korea surprisingly still runs

Myself I have no issues with windows 11 and updates, then again it's a clean install and not a upgrade.
I don't use the junk that comes on the motherboard as extras, so no overlay software or extra drivers installed, in fact I let windows do it all and manage that.
All games are installed and run as admin, I use the default firewall and antivirus that comes pre installed.
I use a nivida card, but only ever do clean installs of updated drivers for card, but don't use the preinstalled sound drivers from nivida or extra junk they wish me to use as that has caused me issue in the past also, hope this all helps

i am not sure what overlay software is - my windows 11 is just want came on the new laptop so i dont think its an upgrade.
I do notice that when an upgrade happens some things in my settings get changed, like the keyboard switches to UK instead of the US style i use.
unfortunately there are just simply too many different setups for different computers/laptops etc and some updates i guess may cause quirks that others dont encounter

ah okay - fortunatel;y i am not using S- Mode - what a horrible awful concept. I hope Microsoft nevers tries to lockdown windows like that in a way that you cant escape from, though with the way the world is going i imagine it will eventually happen

All of them refused to start and have an error message that the serial number could not be validated I think there are some compatibility issues and it would be nice if I could get it resolved.

I recently upgraded from windows 10 to 11 and I am facing similar issues, and more. I have decided to revert back to windows 10.
