Mind Blown

Post by 22sec »

In my over decade of playing AB I have never thought, until today, about turning off both Sprites and Unit Icons. I must say I am blown away by what the game seems to have become. When I can't see the indivual squads and vehicles, and I only see the Unit Flag, the game takes on a different feel. It almost feels and looks like Command. I will post a screenshot soon, and more playtesting.

Quick update, definitely changes what AB is playing this way. I didn't realize that I would now have to track the enemy advance in my head. There are a few visual cues still available, which can almost seem to have the feel of a command post map.

I probably really need to do an AAR playing this way. I am finding it to be much more intense, with an added level of stress.

Current preferred view.

I notice that the remnants of a battered infantry platoon are engaged in a nice firefight with some Soviet forces in the village. The platoon's flag is gone since only infantry squads remain. Unless I turn on Unit Icons for a brief second I know nothing of my force that remains.

And from about the view I first realized a fight was going on.

Few realize what you actually see in a TOC. Maps don’t reflect tanks and people, it’s just symbols… which is very telling in a lot of ways.

Reminds me of a game I used to play years ago; Decisive Action (no longer available as far as I know) by Jim Lunsford. Except in this format it’s about two tiers down in organizational level.
