AAR: Again, once again

Post by Iskandar »

Okay, back into this game, after a pause to do other things.
(one of the few games that draws me back in again and again)

Reading a few things here, and having gained more experience, I decided to start over, instead of going back to my old squad, which is mired in the Metaborator campaign.

Strife (the new squad)
Huntress in Swift Death
Mad Cat in Lightning (2 GME's and a Pulse Laser)
Drip in Fireball
Mord Sith in Badger

Ok, Savanah Campaign, mission 1.

As always, this mission is fairly easy.
Well, mostly easy.

As always, sent my squad down low, instead of going over the hill. Sometimes you can convince an enemy or two to come down below the hill, and take them out piecemeal that way. No luck this time, the enemy went over the big hill, and I approached from the bottom.

Well, mostly from the bottom. I screwed up Drip's movement, had him waiting on enemy for movement for a while, so he got left behind a few hexes before I noticed. So while three approached the hill from the across the water and small lake, he approached from the other side.

So, while everyone else made the water crossing and then the quicksand crossing(and doing scans, mostly useless, although Huntress got a couple of yellow scans that way), Drip's Fireball made first contact with a Quantum and a Wrathchild. He quickly melted a leg right off the Quantum, but the Cold Light Gun tapped him in the head. And the Wrathchild's Neutron Blaster took even more hitpoints away. With back up from the enemy arriving, and the rest of my squad still three hexes away, I was a mite worried. However, he stayed together, and the started heating up the Wrathchild. Then the other two enemy Titan's arrived, a Ripsaw (two Light Meson's, two Vibra Claws, nasty) and a Zealot. Fortunately, the rest of my squad arrived at this point, 1 hex away, in quicksand. Well, most of them arrived. Everyone made there rolls to enter the quicksand, except Huntress. She failed, and failed, and failed, and pretty much kept herself out of the battle.

So, the Fireball was in a hex with the downed Quantum and the Wrathchild. The other two enemy Titans were 1 hex over, and the rest of my squad was running over to the enemy from 1 hex passed that. My Lightning got a yellow scan on the Wrathchild, and planted two GME's and a Pulse Laser into it, disabling the LoT. At which point, my Fireball, out of ammo for the FT's, with a red head, left arm, and RT, withdrew over the hill, and out of sight of the enemy.

Meanwhile, first my Badger charged the Zealot. Did 7 ponts of damage, and knocked herself down, but not the Zealot. Embarassing.
However, the Lightning had better luck, charging 2 seconds later, doing 10 points or so, and knocking it off its feet. Once those two were back on their feet, and the Zealot wasn't, it was a simple matter for the Badger to keep it down with the Black Ray gun, while the MG's and the Lightning's Pulse Laser worked it over.

Meanwhile, the Ripsaw had run one hex away, and turned around and was coming back. Finally, after the fifth or six try, Huntress levered herself back to her feet, and brought the Swift Death into the fight just seconds after the Rip Saw had returned. She charged, bowling over the Rip Saw, and somehow kept her feet. Since she had a yellow scan, she then targetted the Rip Saws RL (damaged from the charge), and ripped it off with a couple of Axe hits. The Zealot's Lot went next, and everyone ejected.

Damage was fairly light to the squad, except the Fireball, which got pounded. 20k in repairs just to it alone, and 20k more for the rest of the squad (most of that for the Swift Death. Most of that damamge was self inflicted from the charge and falling repeatedly.)

So, 130k + of salvage and payment - the 40k of repairs and 30k of upkeep netted me 60k.

Kinda blah, but considering that I screwed up fairly badly with the Fireball, I'll take what I can get.

Got decent experience too, well, except for Huntress, who spent much of her combat time face down in the mud.

Drip came to me with a 14 in Dextrerity. I was well pleased.
Everyone's leadership is 25% or better, and am working on bringing everyone's Defensive and Scanner up to 50%.
Also, primary weapon skills will be at least 50% after the next battle. And, hopefully, so will CC, except for Mad Cat, who will stay around 30%. He is destined to be a support Jock, and will be gaining a GMH Titan as soon as he can pilot Lights.

Everyone has a Primary weapon skill, and a secondary.
Huntress is Close Combat/Cannon (whe will gain Energy as soon as she goes into Heavies, as CC becomes worthless then.)
Mad Cat is my Guided Missle/Energy Jock.
Drip and Mord Sith are Energy/Cannon. They get to play with the fun weapons. Black Ray Guns, Meson Guns, Neutron Blasters. Though Drip will probably stay in Flamethrower type Titans up to the Crucible.

I will be adding another two jocks at the end of this campaign, and probably two more in time for the Metaborator Campaign.
By the time Mertaborator time comes along, I hope to have 1 Assault, 3 Heavies, 2 Mediums, and 2 Recons. Everyone of them with JJ too.

Okay, will be doing (proabably shorter) AAR reports every two missions or three missions or so.

I love this game.

know the feeling![:D]

Cool!! more AARs. I get a real kick out of reading these. Sounds like Huntress needs to practice running in quicksand till she gets it right [:D]

I need to do a 'fresh' squad sometime soon myself. I've been itching to replay the earlier missions

Kinda blah, but considering that I screwed up fairly badly with the Fireball, I'll take what I can get.

Why blah? 60k is good for a first mission. You have 4 jocks, so upkeep is kinda high.
Everyone's leadership is 25% or better,

Actually, you need 26%. [:)]
Huntress is Close Combat/Cannon (whe will gain Energy as soon as she goes into Heavies, as CC becomes worthless then.)

The Close Combat skill is needed for HtH combat too (including recycle time), and DfAs. It's never useless.
I will be adding another two jocks at the end of this campaign, and probably two more in time for the Metaborator Campaign.

Watch your budget. Keep an eye on your leader's rank, it determines when your squad can move up to higher weight classes - you'll need money for that too (and PXPs, don't spend them all if not necessary, keep them when close to a weight class upgrade).
