no air or naval action today but I was shocked when naval search picked up an enemy cruiser squadron just one hex South East of Rabaul... either my nav search was full asleep or the enemy was sprinting in full speed... as predictable as my bombardments were I'm glad it was the day we were replenishing at Gasmata today, the mission type was changed to surface combat and the cruisers will stay at Gasmata to cover the base... I doubt it's an enemy bombardment TF, these ships are surely tasked to deal with my bombardments of Rabaul... there were no air attacks on the enemy out of Gasmata today, well, I have set the dive bombers to train nav search and increase their skill as I was fully relying on the Catalinas to pick up the enemy a day BEFORE they would be in strike range...

we also got some confirmed sinkings today, makes it 3 CV and 1 CVL confirmed sunk in the Banda Sea...

CV Zuikaku is reported to have been sunk near Salajar on Jul 14, 1942
CV Akagi is reported to have been sunk near Tockangbesi-eilanden on Jul 12, 1942
CM Tsugaru is reported to have been sunk near Rabaul on Feb 04, 1942

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 18 minutes

CA Atago
CL Natori, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires
CA Nachi, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires
CA Myoko

real bad day for the IJN when the spotted cruisers ended up at Rabaul today and my airforce took off to attack them... the enemy airfield was plastered by my ongoing naval bombardments so no enemy fighters were in the air, the weather was good so the dive bombers had a field day, putting three cruisers out of action with the first wave of incoming bombers already...

13 x SBD-2 Dauntless releasing from 3000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb
12 x A-24 Banshee releasing from 2000'

Japanese Ships
CA Mogami, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires
CA Nachi, heavy fires
CA Takao, Bomb hits 1, on fire

our anti shipping capabilities are minimal all over the map and one day where your kill 50 Allied dive bombers is a disaster but same as the IJ dive bombers, if they get a chance to hurt your ships without air cover they are real killers...

CL Kuma, Bomb hits 2, and is sunk
CL Kiso, Bomb hits 2, on fire

many times my bombers didn't take off or flew only one phase a day but this time everything favoured us... CL Kuma wasn't hit before and when the second 1000lb bomb slammed through the deck armor the light cruiser's magazin detonated and only debris was left of the ship...

another wave of Banshees and it's Nachi's magazin blowing up this time...

our dive bombers from Gasmata wrecked havoc on the enemy and I'm sure that everything still afloat will be on the run tomorrow and it was the last chance for the enemy to do anything at Rabaul...

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x A-24 Banshee releasing from 4000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb
8 x A-24 Banshee releasing from 3000'

CA Myoko, Bomb hits 8, heavy fires, heavy damage

Myoko has made some 250 miles towards Truk but was spotted by naval search and hit by another 8 bombs by a wave of Banshees... no doubt she's a reef too now...

Operation Kneecap indeed -- the IJN Heavy Cruiser arm is now seriously crippled. The downside is I don't think we'll be seeing any further major surface actions. [:D]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

It's kind of a mid 43 situation even though it's mid 42. The Japanese still have a fully operational airforce and they have more ground units than the Allied so we'll see how that goes. The next 12 months are definately going to decide what hasn't been decided yet.

wow... one of those things why I never understood the results of ground combat in this game... enemy being cut off here for months, no supply and still able to wreck my attacking units that are fully supplied, sitting at their base, no disruption or fatigue...

one of my big tanker convoys from the West Coast to Australia ran over an enemy sub near the West Coast, luckily the escorts sighted the sub first... there is one thing I'm still afraid of and that's losing tankers... all my tanker fleet has been moving non stop since the beginning of the war and I'm still limited in fleet operations at times when it comes down to fuel...
