''Amphibious'' vs ''Cargo'' Resource Loading

Post by JorMallester »

I have just deployed some troops to Amami Oshima (Port 3) via an Amphibious task force. I am now looking to transport out some Resources that are sitting within the base using the same task force.

1) Should I switch the mission over to Cargo or keep it as Amphibious as I load?

Feel free to correct me on this, but what I have generally been doing when it comes to Amphibious task forces is using them to transport troops between bases where at least one of said bases only has a port no higher than level 3. I believe I had read something about ports being level 3 as a cut off point; good chance I might be imagining things.

As I was writing this I thought of just one more question...

2) When I am invading enemy bases with task forces, I should not use ''Transport'' missions right? Again, please correct me if needed. I have not reached a point where LST's and the like become a factor, so I do not fully understand their use quite just yet, but I will attempt to figure those out in due time.

This noob appreciates any feedback. Thank you for your time!

Not in game now to be able to check, but can Resources even be loaded into an Amphibious TF?

Even if so, changing to a Cargo TF would be the better choice as one would have to assume that the Amphib TF would 'Combat Load' the Resources resulting in a smaller total load whereas the Cargo TF would fill the ships capacities. The level 3 port will be fine for loading the resources into a Cargo TF.

Transport TFs can only unload at a controlled port, so you have only the choices of Amphib or Fast Transport TFs for invasions of enemy controlled bases.

LSTs and all other types of 'beaching craft' unload more quickly over beaches than other ship types. That doesn't mean you can't use other ship types for amphibious invasions. Create an amphib TF and see what ship types the game engine will allow you to place in it. Different types of ships have different unloading rates over beaches.

Most importantly, READ the manual as it explains all of this and I don't want to have to write a treatise.

Also, learn the differences between APs and xAPs, plus what also acts like an AP. As a Japanese, I don't think that you get the assault versions but learn those as well. Learn the difference between AKs and xAKs as well as the "-t" conversion. Learn the assault versions as well. The Allies can convert most of their APs and AKs to assault versions. The Commonwealth has LSIs which act like APAs which are the assault version of the APs.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

Many thanks for the reply!

I am not in game at this very moment, but I am 99% certain my ''Amphibious'' TF is currently set to load Resources. It even had the little message display up top saying ''loading resources''. I will verify for that extra 1% certainty when I am in game once again.

I really appreciate all the information. I have read through the entire manual once before. When I need information it is always my priority to first have a read though it once again. I did probably miss bits this time around; trying to find time to play the game and delve into the manual at this moment for me has been a struggle due to some IRL commitments.

Let it be known I take no joy in bothering veterans of the community with my silly questions! [:D]

Thanks again!

I have been converting some ships into those "-t" conversions. Very useful indeed!

1. As a rough rule of thumb, the use of an Amphibious TF for friendly ports sized 0-3 inclusive, will result in speedier unloading, than a Transport or Cargo TF. There are however certain modifiers which if in place, will negate the Amphibious TF advantage, Much depends on the availability of Naval Support and what exactly is being moved to these small friendly ports.

2. The advantage held by an Amphibious TF is very much focused on getting LCUs ashore, not on getting anything on board. Furthermore, the amphibious unload rates listed in the manual do not apply to unloading Fuel, Oil or Resources.

3. In your specific situation, it is unlikely that the type of TF is of much relevance for the return trip. In general terms, an Amphibious TF is inferior to a Transport or Cargo TF for loading raw materials. This is because it is the type of ship within the task force which matters (see following point).

4. An Amphibious TF dropping off troops at a friendly port will include xAP/AP/APA type ships. These ships are heavily weighted towards having dedicated "Troop" cargo holds over dedicated "Cargo" cargo (sic) holds. None of these ship types can carry Resources/Fuel/Oil in their dedicated "Troop" cargo hold, nor can they carry Oil in their dedicated "Cargo" cargo (sic) hold.

Find the table in the manual that lists the unload rate over beaches for the various ship type listed above by others.

It will show you just how valuable the APs and AKs that will upgrade to APAs and AKAs truly are.

Don't waste these ships by risking and losing them just because you can't restrain your exuberance for adventurism before you have the assets to make invasions worthwhile.

The Brits and Aussies have ships that can convert to LSI(L), which is the equivalent of an American APA. Find these ships and tuck them away in some low risk job, or harbor them in a safe port until they can be converted.
