The World at War ELO Tournament

Post by The Land »

Inspired by the War in Europe ELO tournament

Please join the World at War ELO Tournament!

Any game in the 1939 scenario of World at War can be included so long as both players agree. Everyone is welcome to play - you don't have to think you're the best player around to take part! Challenges can be posted in this thread and hopefully someone will pick it up.

The WiE tournament hasn't just created a formal ranking system - it also encourages a sense of community around multiplayer, encourages commitment to seeing games through, and helps create a spirit of sportsmanship.

When you are ready to play, just announce the match in this thread. Please use the format "New Game, Player 1(Axis) vs Player 2(Allies)". Once the match is complete, just post the result in this thread, e.g. "Game completed, Player 1(Axis) vs Player 2(Allies), Allied victory, July 1945". You're welcome to post a brief note about how the game went, but don't have to. That's all there is to it!

Games that are currently ongoing can be included so long as both players agree - new games should be registered as the game begins or in the first few turns.

Your ranking and stats will be tracked automatically (from your perspective) at the top of this thread.

There is no "schedule", you can play whomever you like from whatever side you like. However, the ELO system works best if players take matches against a wide variety of people at different skill levels and on either side - so you are encouraged to do this.

Rules:

Games for the tournament must be main 1939 scenario, unmodded. A small number of house rules e.g. Soft Build Limits or no Major diplomacy can be included if both players agree. (Please note these when you register the match.)

All victories and defeats count equally - no account is taken of decisive vs non-decisive victories vs resignations. If your position is impossible, you are encouraged to offer to resign so both players can take on other games.

Games in the 1939 Race to Victory scenario can be included. However for the Race to Victory scenario, an Axis Tactical Victory outcome will count as an Allied win for tournament purposes - this is for parity between the scenarios, an Axis Tactical Victory outcome in 1945 would very likely turn into a loss by 1947.

If you have an ELO rating from the War in Europe tournament, then your initial ELO rating for this tournament will be adjusted based on 50% of the points from that figure (e.g. 1100 in the WiE tournament starts at 1050, 800 starts at 900). Apart from that this tournament will run separately.

Please honour your commitments to play through games that you start. Please communicate with other players about how fast you are likely to be able to play, and about any periods you expect to be unavailable.

Ghosting
If a player appears to have 'ghosted' then the game will be awarded to their opponent. If your opponent does not appear to be responding and has not let you know of an expected absence, please attempt to contact them via forum PM and/or email. If they continue not to respond for >1 week you may contact the tournament coordinator, who will judge whether to award the game by default.

Long-term absences
If you're unable to play for a period because of work/family commitments, or simply burnout from too much gaming then please let your current opponent(s) know how long you expect to be away for. If you leave a match without communication it will be awarded to your opponent as above, but usually committed players find their opponents are happy to pause matches if they understand your situation.

Rules may be adjusted as time goes on, especially if people find loopholes in them.

How the ELO system works:

The short answer is: Every time a game finishes, the winner gains points from the loser based on how strong the two players are. If you beat a higher-rated player, you gain more points - as you were expected to have less chance of winning. In the event of a draw, a small number of points may go from the stronger to the weaker player (if two equal players draw there is no change.)

So over time a strong player will gain a high score and a weak(er) player will have a lower score. If a player becomes stronger with practice then they will eventually win more matches and climb in the ratings!

May the best players win!

Note re previous ELO rankings

I'm aware there was a previous ELO system set up. After looking at it, I have decided not to try to incorporate games listed in that ranking. It seems some players listed many matches against opponents who may not have been aware that their games were being included in a tournament. However, old games from the previous tournament can be included by request of both players.

I would love to join. I would encourage to agree for:
By Cpuncher
1. No diplo on Majors.
2. No diplo on Bulgaria (haven't tested if Allies can keep Bulgaria out of war until Mid 1941).
3. No DOW USSR until 1941.

Esp 1&3, didn't try 2.
Available from Monday-Tuesday, will see how many people will join and then offer a game straight on.

I'm up for a game against a player who can offer a serious challenge. I've played perhaps 25 or so games and have lost once. I can generally return 1 turn each day.

PM me if interested. Name as many rules as you can think of as I will "exploit" anything you don't specify.

Hello, up for a game.
Results are ca. 20-2, inflated because I bumped into a lot of beginning players. A lot of holes to cover. But open for a challenge from anyone really, can deliver at least turn per day.
I would gladly take Allies side. [:)]

Question, would 1939 Race to Victory games be 'qualifying' for ladder purposes?

Question, would 1939 Race to Victory games be 'qualifying' for ladder purposes?

This needs a bit of thought. In some ways the answer should be Yes, because the game and scenario setup is the same, except the time both sides have to meet the victory conditions.

However the time limit and the way victory is judged make Race to Victory easier for the Axis - as the shape of the game tends to favour the Allies late-war, and also the 'tactical victory' conditions are fairly broad for the Axis.

I'd suggest we include Race to Victory, but treat the Axis Tactical Victory here as an Allied win . After all, this is a situation where the Axis do not hold a great deal outside their core countries, and 2 years' more play would mean almost inevitable defeat.

I would welcome peoples' thoughts on this though, before making anything definite.

Great - just to check, as this is new for people and I haven't seen them in the thread: DoXiTXxX is aware the game is included in the tournament and happy to take part?

Thank you, The Land, for creating the ELO Tournament. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I'm new to multiplayer World at War but not new to the game.

Either side is okay and I'm open to a challenge from anyone. And I can commit to at least a turn a day.

Cpuncher's house rules sound good but I'm flexible for other ideas.

Please send me a PM if you are interested in playing.
