S400 with active missiles and midcourse updates

Post by giantsquid »

Hello everybody,
I was playing “Incident at la Perouse” scenario (Japan vs Russia) as Japan, and noticed the Russian are firing deadly 40N6 active missiles from 200 nm using Su-35 and Mig-31 fighters to provide midcourse update to SAMs directed at Japan planes. I have read USN can do the same with Standard ERAM and advanced E-2, F-35 etc… thanks to cooperative engagement capability, now in CMANO: http://www.warfaresims.com/?p=4076
I can see in DB the USN systems support CEC, but no info in Russian systems. Maybe in game terms it works like CEC anyway for Russian side too? Thanks.

Hi Francesco,

They are different: The Su-35s/MiG-31s do not shepherd the 40N6s directly; instead, they communicate their updated target data to the S-400 battery which then transmits corrections to the airborne missiles (you can enable "Show Datalinks" in the map settings to check which unit is guiding which weapon).

This is an important distinction because it means the missiles are still effectively slaved to their firing unit. If the datalink is jammed, or LOS between the missiles and their firing battery is broken (not uncommon when shooting at a distant low-altitude target, or if the target ducks below a ridge), or if the battery itself is attacked and either destroyed or has its comm devices knocked out, the missiles stop receiving updates. If any of the above happens with CEC/SM-6, the missile actively looks for another available datalink provider (E-2D etc).

So, big difference in targeting flexibility & robustness.

Thank you so much for your clear answer. I’m always impressed by the amazing depth of this simulation and the work done by you developers.
So the best tactic to counter long range S400 shots with active missiles could be:

1. Kill the planes updating your position
2. Break the data link line of sight between launcher and missiles with terrain
