while the display works, some of the graphics do look like their a bit blurred on this, may have to change some DPI settings or alter to a lower compatibility mode to fully support all the features of the game on a modern O/S, as the txt that comes up for casualties etc, does look a bit blurred but readable on screen, but do think the DPI may need altering to suit the res used maybe[;)]

read me says it all tbh to sort out DPI issues that some may have on windows 10,

Windowed Mode:
Horse and Musket is designed to run in 1024x768 resolution. Even on most new systems with flat screens, as long as you have your display driver scaling settings properly set, the graphics should look nice and clear. However, some systems or video cards do not scale all resolutions well. For this reason, we’ve included a Windowed mode that allows it to run on any system without scaling. To enable Windowed mode, perform the following steps:
1. Locate the installation directory for Horse and Musket, Volume I
2. Open the HorseNMusket.ini file, it should open in your text editor
3. Find the line that reads “WindowedMode=0” and change the 0 to a 1.
4. The next time you launch Horse and Musket, it will appear in a Window rather than full screen

not that i could find the line, so just added it myself lol[X(]

then you get no blurred txt, but windowed and not full screen so game works as designed and not stretched and wrong DPI settings used etc[;)]

and now after a few plays, some time on the editor as well, as that's where the fun is[8|][&o]




either load up a pre done battle and alter it, then rename before saving or a blank map and make your own[;)]

Thanks for the tips.

50% of my gaming time is spent on archaic John Tiller games so I don't mind a bit of compromise in terms of resolution or having to run Windowed mode but since I use my system as a work computer as well - stability is key.

Seems from your tests that stability is not an issue.

i have a brand new imaged system, so each test on each new game installed is on a fresh O/S of windows 10, so no, nothing so much as a minor niggle tbh, DPI and screen res aside seems to be very stable, i have the default AV from windows, and nothing else on the pc mind you.

it's part of the job i signed up for and was requested by Admin, bit of a pain for each game install, but then if no issues, it must be either on someone else's hardware or software wise, and not windows 10 in general etc.

Unfortunately, this is not working out so well with Windows 8.1

Normal mode was completely shot as it tried to put me into 1024 x 768 but failed (this was sort of expected)

I then went to Windowed mode via the .ini file and then it launched but the Window is very small. Other older games you get the option to set the Window size in the ini file - like Master of Orion 2

or there are settings from the menu to select a resolution level - Time of Fury

So - trying to play from the Windowed mode - text was still blurry, the mouse was very laggy and was not responsive on the sides of the Window that were not near the edge of the screen.

The only "luck" I had was changing to 1024 x 768 in advance of launching. That seemed sort of ok but screws you in terms of any other Apps you are running.

Oh well ... seems I'll play these every few months when I'm not multi-tasking ....

Whenever I see a post on this old game thread I have to take look as this was one of my favorite engines for an era that is almost never done in gaming. Keep hoping I'll see the developer come back with news of a GNW , Spanish Succession war game in the works.

It's not playing nicely with mine (Win 8.1 at 1920 x 1080) at all - which is a shame since it appears to have a lot of potential ....

Hello, Windows 10 and 1680x1050 res. The game works fine, just a little too pixelated for taste but at the right "sweet spot" zoom the graphics likely look as good as they ever did. I tried wndoes mode too, looked a tad better but I hatehaving a little window within a big screen. Hope you can fiddle to get the game to work on your rig, I think the combat mechanics, especially cavalry charges are the osme the best out there! cheers!
