If time and motivation allows, it'll also be useful to have at least some special messages (even if just one). The briefing already informed that there is some controversy in the Indonesian request for assistance and that Australian Forces should maintain a suspicious posture but having some little detail revealed about possible intentions of the Indonesian military would be very welcome.

RE: Operation Balpara 2019

Post by Maromak »

Hi and thanks again for creating this excellent scenario. I have just finished with a minor victory/848.

I think others have already mentioned most of the points I was going to make including extending the range of the patrols and the warning message/Frago once the Indonesians become hostile. If you check the Losses/Expenditures below, there are a very large number of civilian aircraft that crashed in the first few hours of the scenario, presumably due to lack of fuel as I don't think they were fired upon. Something to check.

The cloud deck at 10k ft made ground strikes more complicated which was a good addition. The QW-1 MANPADS were very difficult to detect and destroy and brought down a few of my aircraft that got too close.

Did you consider adding JORN radar coverage?

I think once the range of the Sukois and/or F-16s is extended, the player will have a lot to manage between ground strike and air defence. In the current version, the Su-27/30s didn't give me many issues as they generally RTBed before getting close to Sumba. For the majority of the scenario, I only had two F-35s dedicated to anti-air patrols.

Again, well done!

Edit: wanted to add that there appear to be a couple of TA-50 missions with triggers but no targets. Using the editor I manually launched the TA-50s but they just RTBed straight away presumably as they had no target?

Ok, something squirrelly with the airlines, the 747 has enough fuel to get between any two airports in the scenario without trouble. I'll definitely check that.

I've got some pretty big changes in an update, ready to go. Falcon, and TA50 improvements, more interesting militia behavior, and yes, frag-o's. The last was a huge, glaring omission. And yes, the Flankers. First of all, I turned refueling on, d'oh. Second, I hopefully made then much more of a factor.

Just so my legions of fans don't think I've forgotten (ok.... five of you). I'm playtesting Release 2 right now.... I added or changed a ton of events, I want to make sure they're working. It's a slow process on a 2.5 ghz pc, with 2 gb ram and native video. :-)

Ok, finished a run through last night, finally. All the new events and so on work as designed, which is good. I've got a list of a couple dozen minor tweaks to get ready for release.

Question for the folks that played this before: what are your thoughts on having an SF squad or two on the island? It should certainly ease the complexity of finding/targeting Militia units... but would that make it too easy?

I think that's up to you, what you want your scenario to be.
- Having Special Forces going in first is the more realistic way in my opinion.
- Doing it without such assets might be a more beneficial way for the overall scenario challenge.

A good compromise would be to give the player the ability to deploy SF if he wishes to by sending a NH90 or C-130 into an area connected to a spawn-event. Just an idea!

OK, finally an updated version, uploaded in the first post of this thread.

Change Log (well, at least partial... I think I lost a couple pages of notes):
- Upgraded Indonesian Su-30s to allow more interesting loadouts (if Indonesia were getting into a fight with someone I don't think this is too much of a stretch; I used Malaysian version as stand-in)
- Improved Indonesian tanker situation
- Redeployed many TA-50s
- Added targets to all Indonesian strike missions
- Gave the Indonesian 'phibs a reason for being in the scenario
- Moved a lot of the militia units off-island, and added a few, activated via teleport events, to simulate units coming out of hiding
- Added a few more fleet broadcasts and more ongoing intel during the scenario
- Moved some RAN units to make the game flow better (at least, in my play-through)
- Added two ASAS patrols on Sumba; relocated one of the SSKs to be consistent with having just dropped them on the island. (ASAS units simulated using USN SEALS)
- Added variable weather

Let me know what you think! I think it's going to be tougher, but a lot more realistic and hopefully immersive. I enjoyed playing it through, even on my insanely slow computer.

Two other notes:
- Maromak, you posted that all the airliners died when you played it the first time... I couldn't reproduce that.
- You also mentioned JORN... I didn't include that here, but I'm interested. I'll have to do a little playing with it to see how it impacts the scenario. There will be another upgrade coming when 1.07 releases, to take advantage of the improved strike logic. I'll take a look at JORN at that time.

Well damn..... were any weapons expended, by anyone? Anyone want to help with troubleshooting????
- I ran the scenario with only the civilian side, no airliners down
- I ran it with only civilians, Indonesians and militia, no airliners down
- I ran it with all sides, through the entire scenario... no freakin airliners down.

I'm at a loss. When Maromak said he saw that on the previous version, I looked for it, couldn't make it happen.

I specifically checked for expenditures, and no weapons expended. OK I will look into what happens as soon as I finish actually playing.

That made me laugh.

The airliners are pretty frustrating. Everyone's on recurring Ferry missions and well within their max range. I'll try to investigate further, but I may need some help. Maybe once the 1.07 rush is over, one of the devs can take a look.

I have just spotted one of commercial aircraft flying at 300 ft altitude. Unfortunately it ran out of fuel before I identified it. What would be its fuel burn at 300 ft? Are you sure ferry altitudes are not set somehow?

Well,

Weather is PITA, because automatic ASuW/Ground patrols don't work in bad weather, and I had to micromanage helos waay more than I liked.

Indonesian amphib group was not able to make it in time; not sure because I damaged some of them or just because they are too slow.

Automatic refueling is PITA, and missions are too distant to be able to work without refueling. I'd rather you move Indonesia somewhat closer to Australia, really.

Lost Perth FFG to aircraft/missiles. Lost multiple helos to MANPADs.

F-35Bs really made no difference whatsoever. Most of AAW encounters were handled by SAMs.

All in all, mixed impression. The scenario, admittedly interesting, as it is needs too much micromanagement for my liking.

As far as aircraft goes, this is probably a bug when the aircraft ferries at 300 ft with much higher fuel burn than normal.

I just filed a bug report, tm.asp?m=3809233

Thanks for the bug report.

Re the rest of it.....
Not much I can do about Australia's location. Personally, I wish it were closer to the states, the 14 hour flight is a bit long!
The Indonesian phibs aren't going to get to Sumba before scenario end, they're just targets.
The weather is supposed to complicate things. I've got decently long periods of good weather, interspersed with short periods of utter crap. Pretty consistent with my experience in the tropics.

When I was playing, I set up a cleanup mission covering the entire island. This is what I normally do in similar situations. The mission is ASuW patrol (Ground-only), then I assign whatever aircraft I consider spare/available to that mission with appropriate loadouts. The targets get detected, identified, and killed as the aircraft arrives. The aircraft then returns to reload, rinse, repeat, and this continues hopefully until the territory is clean, fully in background. This leaves me free to designate priority targets and manage whatever other aspects of the war there are.

With your scenario, I got basically all helos sitting on top of their targets until bingo fuel; so that required micromanagement of, well, eight or so helos over multiple targets, kind of cumbersome to play. I then did a small scale test, and eventually filed it as another bug report - tm.asp?m=3809325 - if you have ten minutes to spare you can download that test scenario and see what happens. In your scenario, I get the same effect as in the small test, multiplied by the number of helos.

I guess this cannot be helped without some code change in Command.

I can also vouch for the 300 ft alt ferry bug, but I see you've submitted it already.

What build are you guys using, is it 1.06 (not sure of build number) or one of the 1.07 RC's? I'm just insanely frustrated that I can't duplicate it!!!!

It also kind of kills the whole scoring system on the scenario, which isn't ideal.
