Historicon fan report..Steel Panthers?

Post by wodin »

Just read the superb write up by Rob the competition winner who went to Historicon.

Well worth a read.

Anyway what really made me sit up is that Mr Grigsby talked about a return to a tactical game ala Steel Panthers..does anyone know if this is actually going to happen or just general chatter? If it does happen thats the best wargame news I've heard in years. Infact if it is happening that news is the best birthday present I've ever had.

It's going to happen, but we can't put a timeline on it yet. [8D]

I'm as excited as you all are.

I would really love to see an updated or even better a brand new version of SP, and would buy it in minute of release.

Cheers

I have a 100 dollar bill Gary can have for a reborn Steel Panthers :)

I can wait a bit, I consider 'a bit' something like 2015 Gary :) Don't make me wait too long eh, I'm not getting any younger here. Forget I said that.

I don't expect a cloned Steel Panthers, I would like something like how Panzer Corps is to Panzer General in that it is not the same game, but looks like the same game.

I'll settle for anything that doesn't make a court date occur.

Do not get too pumped up yet.

The timeline was WITW and then WITE 2.0 and then WWII in Europe complete and then Steel Panthers.

I just hope longevity runs in his family.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I really had a great time.
I'm seeing my news on Steel Panthers is getting people excited, and you should be as I am. I do want to say that I did not get the feeling that this would be anytime soon. They have a lot of plans that they want to get done first it seems. On a related note, during the presentation Gary did admit that he has more fun developing the tactical games compared to the monsters he's been working on.

Sulla sounds to me then highly unlikely..not sure how old GG is but I doubt he will still be programming\making games in his seventies and to be honest even if he did I doubt I'd still be bothered by then anyway already gaming is becoming a tad boring and I doubt a fire up a waragme once every three months and a game in general once a week if that.

As I see it, a day will come, when the idea of setting up a board game will be a find memory.

The day will come when I need to reconsider my living space to be more in line with being a senior.

When that day comes, I will be more and more likely to be found sitting in a chair watching film reading books and playing with a computer.

I don't expect to be unable to play a computer wargame as soon as I expect to run out of need for my board games.

The day I can't play a bit of a game on a laptop, is likely a day I am ready for the dirt.

Hmm, this could be great news, IF he sees it through. It would be tough to surpass "the Old Warhorse", so I'd love to be involved in it, just to make sure my beloved USMC is treated properly. [;)]

One of the things I've always wanted to see was increasing the number of weapons slots per unit increased from 4 to 6. This would cut down on the number of variations needed in each OOB. I'd also like some improvements in the WWII long campaign to make them more historically-based, perhaps as an option.

My ultimate goal is a 1st Marine Division long campaign focusing on the campaigns/battles they fought in, which were Guadalcanal, New Britain, Peleliu and Okinawa, with perhaps an optional variant based upon the invasion of Japan.

Another overriding concern with me is the importance of using combined arms, as opposed to the focus on armored vehicles in WWII warfare. Huge tank battles were the exception, rather than the rule. One more thing: in a fast-moving situation, communication and coordination often triumphed over superior weapons. These are crucial factors which should not be ignored.

Why ?

The SP versions we have now are already quite perfect imho.

Of course they have certain flaws but if you know these, you can work around them or even use them to your favor.

The why, the software blows from a point of view of functioning on a computer these days.

Plus I'd want the game to eliminate some aspects.

KG mentioned the long campaigns. Personally the long campaign idea is ok, but the actual long campaigns in the software are of little value to me, they suffer the same problem they do in other games. The moment the player can just pick certain combos that have eventual abusive unhistorical overwhelming superiority over the AI the game has lost me.

I played a few long campaigns way back, but the AI was never even a remote challenge after the core force was too improved. It felt like I was bullying the AI. And had nothing to do with history. I liked the Mega Campaigns approach, the player was given the forces and told the mission and you made the best out of what you were given.

I prefer scenarios over buy it yourself for this reason too. A well researched scenario is fun, but just about all of my experience with DYO in wargames has been entirely unsatisfying in the extreme.

If this new Steel Panther dealio happens, you guys might redeem yourselves for the Combat Leader fiasco.

Make this new SP for Xbox One. MS marketplace is the big time and SP is a hit! Update graphics is all. Port it to PC as an afterthought [8D]

I think by the time SP happens, the X-Box One will have happened and will have rolled over and died actually.

Not that I support the PS4, but at least the PS4 is not being manufactured by fools.

yeah I would definitely buy a new an updated SP, they keep doing Close Combat and Panzer General clones so why they waiting so long on a SP remake with better graphics (3d) and newer OS ease of install and play?

If Gary makes it with 3d he can keep it (and cram it). 3d doesn't equal better graphics, it just makes it 3d.

Well, this was my second wargame and i love it (i have the original SP on his box hehehe) and i am really interested in a new one.

But what we expect from a new SP???

In my case i want the same feeling when play it than when i was young and see the intro videos and play battles where i can feel the battle sounds but of course we are not in 199x lets made a list:

-improve graphics, yes, this is for me a must have, made terrain more detailed with a better way to see elevations specially on wood/jungle terrain, in units well, bigger hexes give the option to have bigger vehicles and units with more details (not like in SP titles a single unit icon you can have 2-3 with diferent camos and squads where you can see diferent uniforms at least) and a much better look and not only this, you can play at the "satellite height" you want.

-3D... i dont say no but i prefer a good 2D (maybe with the option to play using counters) over an average or a bad 3D.

-Improve the infantry with the add of stats for any soldier (like in CC) with his morale, experience etc etc to made in campaigns/operations appear the replacement factor in the lower level (same in vehicle-gun crew) and of course appear the option to see the weapons soldier by soldier here we can see use enemy weapons if one guy is out of ammo or you see a usefull one (here could be automatic, be on the hex where are weapons and ask you if you want pick one and what) add melee combat and a banzai/hurra rule.

-Campaigns... well, i really prefer something shorter, more operational, to have medium small units (from company to battalion size) i think for example in move your units along the Crusader battle, Guadalcanal battle etc etc, more than move from begin to end of war i dont say remove this option but i prefer operations specially if you can play it over the same map to see how evolution the battlefield along the operation.

-Of course mantein the number fronts that game can cover or at least give game the option to cover one front complete, or all Pacific or all West Front or all East front.

-Multiplayer... provide team game support??? not only 1 VS 1.

One interesting point is what level... squad level like in SP-SP2 and Win SP that for me is ok, or maybe SP III level??? are in near future interesting titles covering the SP III level... depends a lot of how is the game for me but i think that SP original scale is ok.

Other thing is be alive or at least not be to old to see the game [:D]

What do you think?

EDIT: something i dont remembre add to the list, apart the % of hit enemy add for vehicles a penetration % and a "blow up" % could be a good add.
