Wow, nice to read about an unsung hero of the French Resistance. Funny that the French can still have "Royal Titles" even after the 1789 Revolution and that his son can now have his title, but regardless his story of resistance during Occupied Vichy France in WW2 is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

The French monarchy was reinstated after Napoleons fall in 1815 ( and 1814 ). It lasted until 1848 with the start of the Second Republic.

Yes, I read about this homme the other day. Quite a remarkable man.

The Bourbons were re-instated. Napoleon became a monarch himself, of course, and was quite happy creating a nobility of his own with Dukes, Counts, etc. As most of the holders of those titles who managed to survive the Napoleonic wars didn't end up being guillotined like their 'aristo' predecessors it's probably more likely this guy's title dated from the First French Empire than pre-revolutionary France.

Amazing man.

His family was listed as being noble in 1019.

I do not think the majority of nobles died under the first Republic. Many left and came back after the fall of Napoleon. But you are correct in that both Napoleons did creats their own nobility.

“The courage and skill of British agents is without equal,” he recalled the ambassador noting. “It is just that their French accents are appalling.” so 'Allo 'Allo wasn't far off the mark
