Looking to purchase a good set of comics.

Post by walsh »

Hello all, I have a small kid and I am just getting prepared up to make it good on his birthday which is around the corner. He is a book-lover and likes comics with superman being his fav. Now, I don’t get enough free time and the gift I had like to get him would be a collection of his fav heroes’ comics. There have been some online stores that I had visited but did not find any interesting stuff. Any suggestions to make his present a good one?

I´m not sure what you´re asking for.

If you´re looking for a new comic to introduce your kid to, may I suggest The Adventures of Asterix?

In my humble opinion, this is the best comic series ever (well, except for #33, which sucks) - although Don Rosa´s series on the early life of Scrooge McDuck is almost as good.

If your son likes Superman, I can't recommend "All Star Superman" enough. The first 6 issues are collected in a book, and I think issues 7-12 will be released in a book soon (not sure though). It's written by Grant Morrison, one of the best in the business right now, and drawn by Frank Quitely, my favorite illustrator. Also, the coloring is simply amazing. It's definitely an all-ages story too.

"Superman For All Seasons" by Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale is another superman favorite, and many put it ahead of All Star Superman. Kid-friendly, too. It tells the story of Superman growing up and becoming a hero, while All-Star is more of Superman just doing cool stuff - kind of throwback stories.

Walsh, why not introduce your kid to the comics whose heroes have kept adults smiling for years, the presentation of these boxed sets is awesome - I've been collecting them as they've come out.

PEANUTS BOXED SETS

These are complete collections - something he may cherish throughout his life.

My favourite comic of all-time, which I started reading just couple years ago, is Yoko Tsuno. Belgian comic serie, where main character is japanese woman, is unusual to say the least, but it really works. Whole serie is in full color! Selection of english language versions is most limited, but if kid likes it enough, he has good reason to study french. I'll point you directly at first english language issue at Amazon.com.

Note: English localization is made in wrong order. At least the first two issues work independently, even though there can be some references to other issues (that aren't in english). If you want more info, Wikipedia has it.
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

"Danger Girl" by J. Scott Campbell

Great stuff.
Let's see what Wikipedia has to say...
Danger Girl is an American comic book series created by J. Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell. The comic features a group of busty, scantily-clad secret agents led by a mentor named Deuce. The comic is a spoof of James Bond-style spy/action stories, with the Danger Girls being a send-up of the Bond girls. Unlike the Bond girls, however, the Danger Girls are the stars of the series
Great, huh? [X(]
