CEAW Ver 2.0

Post by Happycat »

I see that Fury will soon release a new version of CEAW.
It was one of my earliest Slitherine purchases, and I loved the game, but also was frustrated by its limitations.

A fellow in Norway, back in 2007, was one of my reliable opponents, and we found that we thought very much alike about the game. He was a programmer by trade, and so he would take his ideas and mine, and tweak the game engine (I think it was javascript?). Between the two of us, we had a good knowledge of WW2 history and I think that the game mod became a fairly accurate representation of the events of 1939 to 1945 in Europe. I should add that all of the modifications were with the blessing of the original designer/developer of CEAW.

Later, a fellow named Ron, from Arkansas USA joined us, and we became the BJR mod for awhile, which then evolved to become an officially sanctioned Slitherine mod called the CEAW Grand Strategy Mod.

I'm not claiming any great fame here, but I do know the original game as it evolved from what Johan, the original developer made, to the improvements that Slitherine added by hosting the GS mod. For about 4 or 5 years, the game was a constant presence on my hard drive and lots of fun against another human. I won't talk about the AI :P

It will be nice to see that old phoenix rise from the ashes of obsolescence and fly once again, with all of the advancements made possible with current technology.

For some further background on the old Grand Strategy Mod, for those interested, here's a link to a post my old friend Ron put on the MWIF forum about a year ago.

I played CEAW back in the day, including the GS Mod. It is a testament to the mod that Matrix Games included it with the Commander - Europe at War Gold version as an update. [See https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 4&t=322068 We should assume that the upcoming full remake will incorporate most of the latest GS mod features to ensure hth gameplay is balanced and realistic.

As for AI, yeah that was a CEAW weakness. Notably, there were no Axis or Allied redeployments to North Africa and Egypt to keep that theater interesting. It is a must for an ETO wargame. There were also other AI combat weaknesses that should have been resolved. The good news is that Hubert Cater's SC-series "fuzzy logic" AI and Event scripting has been darn near perfected over the past two decades and should bring noticeable improvements to CEAW for solitaire gaming. Plus, the SC-series Editor is robust enough to allow modders to adjust most everything or create new campaigns.

The GS Mod team should keep an eye out for the call for playtesters. Help make the upcoming full remake a constant presence on players' hard drives for years to come.

Hey Guys,

I heard that the band might be getting back together! :D

By the way, I'm from Alabama not Arkansas.

Also, I'm retired now would love to get back into this classic. The first human to human game of CEAW I ever played was against Jim, and then Borger. Learned a lot from both! And took many of defeats from both too!

Would love to be on the beta team for this product (if needed and still possible).

I was in to CEaW in 2016, but moved on to Strategic Command III. I really enjoyed SC-III, so I find this news ... fascinating.

I was on CEaW and moved on to MWIF. But I still have room for CEaW ver2!

The difference is being able to finish a game in a few weeks with CEaW vs (for me) in 17 months for MWIF. Check out my last AAR in the MWIF forum! Check out my current AAR too.
