Possible upgrade ideas

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Possible upgrade ideas

Post by Alan McDonald »

Two thoughts on RTW3:

1. Divisions - since you seem to be only put one type of shop in a division, could you implement a system of task force, where you can put multiple ship types together? You could include core, screen, and ASW/AAW/Scout rings.

2. Could you include a spreadsheet tab where you keep track of the number and status of your ship classes, including initial build, rebuilds and scrapped ship numbers, and active/deactivated status? Might also be able to track what division/task forces (if implemented) have ships from that class.

Also, thank you if your top weight counter was implemented from my idea, if not, thanks for including it anyway.

For the first point, you can already set a role to each division and it will be used in battle.

Not sure about historical basis, but since IIRC carrier task force is a tech I recall seeing in game perhaps different task forces can be unlocked via tech opening options for what can be your core group and what can be paired with them.

For divisions, one thing I would really love to see is the ability for small (maybe <6000t) CL to act as DD leaders, maybe allowing a single one into DD divisions. The size limit could maybe scale with tech/date too.

Two other things that would be great;
1. We have a ship history which is awesome. A similar one for commanders would be great.
2. Allowing refits/changes to ships under construction.

Yes, the division editor should be allowed to handle task forces, eg. 2 CVs + 2 CAs and 8 DDs.
However, there are some other shortcomings in an otherwise great game. I've played so far about a dozen scenarios, all in the 1935 time frame, as either Italy or the US, and noticed this:
1. No matter how hard I tried to be as unthreatening as possible, when playing Italy after about 12-20 turns France inevitably would declare war on me. The thermometer on the righthand side of the screen over the French flag would start creeping up from green, to Brown, yellow, orange and red. BOOM. When playing the US, the same thing happened with Britain.
In 1935-40, while war between France and Italy was historically plausible, between US and UK it certainly was not. More likely, US vs Japan.
2. I get saddled with a war, but more than prepare for it by sending ships out to areas likely to be targeted by France or Britain, there's not much else I can do except wait. For example, I would have loved sending immediately two well escorted CVs and a clutch of my new SSLs to Northern Europe to raid Britain, but how? Sending subs is possible, but the CV TF?
3. The system, in US vs UK, sets up a battle somewhere off Martha's Vineyard (usually a wild goose chase) or the Caribbean (contact!). The game assigns me two CVs in a division, full of new planes. How do I scramble them to attack the Brits?

Perhaps I'm missing something. I'm pretty sure.
