Valid Characters for SystemNames.txt?

Post by Kahnite »

Hi Folks,

I have two questions pertaining to a mod I'm working on.
  • What are the valid characters for text characters?
  • Is there a method (aside from outright replacement) for a mod to replace the existing SystemNames.txt?
I have found so far, that [a-zA-Z0-9 ] seem to be the only valid characters. This unfortunately makes it difficult to properly represent foreign languages (notably Spanish, Arabic and Asian [Romanized] names). Apostrophes (') are used for comments, so I tried Grave Accent (`) and/or Acute Accent (´) to represent "xxx´s Star", but these, in addition to any other accented character only results in a space substituted for the character (Example: "Jī Xīn" results in "J X n"). Is there any possibility of adopting a wider range of Unicode characters?

Also, for all you modders out there, the issuing of names in generated maps is completely random. No need to try to arrange them in any order.
Sincerely,
Kahnite
