2 mediums: Firefly & Achilles

Although there's not quite as much going on in this forum as it used to a couple of years ago, I'll nevertheless share 2 titan designs of mine, with whoever is interested in them. And to make things more interesting, both share a story of failure and success.

Note:
I'm aware that there is some other titan called "Fire Fly".

Quite some time ago, I was playing Company of Heroes. For some reason, I thought it might be cool to model some of the most popular WWII tanks as Titans in ToS, featuring their unique characteristics!

The first titan I made was the Sherman, and I foolishly believed that it was good. The whole design revolved around mobility, heat regulation (for a fast RoF) and stealth capabilities (ECM). I despised the use of heavy armour or heavy and specialized weapons, as it wouldn't really fit the historic Sherman's capabilities. Needless to say, the design was useless in almost every battle. The paper-thin armour (25 AP maximum, Center Torso) was a joke and the dual AC7s coupled with a medium laser were hardly enough to bother enemy titans of the same weight category.

So I made the decision that the design needed a complete overhaul. Heat regulators, jump jets, ECM and scanner systems were toned down to free up weight and space for an overall armour upgrade by about 20%. Range and rate of fire were sacrificed to install more damaging weaponry, consisting of the AC12, a black ray gun and a pulse laser. With this dramatic increase in both offensive and defensive capabilities and the reduction of redundant systems, the Sherman has finally evolved into a titan that can successfully take on other medium titans, and more importantly, win against them in medium and short range combat. Why the name change? Simple: "Firefly" was the name of a British Sherman variant that was outfitted with a significantly more powerful AT gun, that could even crack heavy German tanks at normal combat ranges. It was upgunned so to speak, and the same is true for my Firefly variant of the Sherman titan design.

Similar to the Firefly, the Achilles had a predecessor that didn't achieve any satisfying results on the battlefield. It was called "Titan Destroyer", in allusion to the American M10 tank destroyer aka "Wolverine". The design is pretty similar, but it featured only 1 medium laser as backup weapon and was based on the same chassis as the Firefly. When I realized that the medium and short range firepower was, despite the 2 gauss guns just insufficient, I once again made some changes to save weight (also sacrificed a little bit of armour protection) and install a large and a small laser to create some firepower during the long loading cycle of the both gauss guns. Although the Achilles (name again based on British WWII tank) surely can't take a lot of damage, a good offense is a good defense.

I hope you enjoyed the short stories of the origin of these titans, and maybe they could even be a useful addition to your titan database. [;)]

So, in order to upload the database entries, I just renamed the file into 3.jpg.

Remember to rename it back into 3.xch in order to use it.
