hey i was just wondering what everyone was doing and how many people still visit these forums, and can i get a copy of the titan database update sent my way.

also i wanna show these off :P i just made em a couple days ago, some similarities to other titans around but you can only do so much with lights and recons i guess, both pretty nasty at short range/cc and a little stopping power at lower-mid range.

That quad must be one overheating design... personally I'd probably downgrade the engine...

quad king does ok, it has a little tendancy to get a little hot sometimes, but the level 8 heat reg helps, i put in a decent computer hoping to be able to call shots with it for a quick kill or disable, if you can get in 4 pulse laser shots to a specific location its usually enough to mess up a light titans day.  i acually only used it a couple times, and had 2 in a pair, was playing leapfrog with them because of heat at the end of the battle when everybody gathered in one hex, but it usually cools down whenever im running to get in close to another target and not firing much. as for the engine, i read somewhere that a better engine helps the reload times of energy weapons, that was the basis for that, is that true? if not then im going to downgrade it and add desperately needed armor and/or a shield.  also i want to note that a group of cherry poppers are quite nasty when comming around a hill real fast on a heavy titan }:), if only they displayed cockpit videos of the pilots to see his face when i preformed group chainsaw surgery on em, heh it seemed to be packing nothing but missles and a laser too, i couldn't tell too well but thats what he was firing at an ally nearby. i can only imagine what a couple of duelests will do in the hands of a few capable sadists.

also heres a design that i was hoping would rock, but 3 of em got messed up pretty bad by a pair of attilas and 2 recon titans that i cant recall what they were (they took the brunt of the flamethrowers and went down pretty fast).  the two recon titans got immediately put out of service and one of my dark lancers had bad damage to the head so i backed off and lobbed autocannon rounds (mostly unsuccessfully) at that point, the other two ran out of flame thrower ammo when gettin close and personal with the attilas and got knocked down a couple times, it was a pretty gritty battle and nobody was really in good shape, i started running into heat problems with the black ray gun, my main weapon, and was reduced to hand to hand for the most part until i knocked one down then i took the oppotunity to drive him into the ground despite my hot titans, i blew him to bits along with everyone else in the hex and suffered unconsiousness and shutdowns. luckily my two pilots were barely hangin on in their now useless titans, the other attila survived also but i ran over with my damaged one and finished it off, it got pretty nasty but i managed to pull off a win. the flamethrowers carry limited ammo and they are part of the damage package so when they run out of ammo the black ray gun gets abused and the titans effectiveness gets reduced a lot, the f-throwers are housed in the L and R torsos which are armored good, as opposed to the left arm which was the last space i could make availible for the autocannon, and have no space for extra ammo without sacrificing armor, which sucks because i intended for this to be a well armored design. the idea was to close in with the auto cannon go for a quick knockdown with the BRG and waste em with the flamethrowers.  im thinking taking the autocannon out and just throwing in a good ol chainsaw and making it an in your face titan design, so at least when the f-throwers run out, i dont have ammo or heat to worry about as much and can still dish out some pain on a regular basis.  the only problem i see now is what happens if the arms get blown off with no ammo left.

any suggestions?

got the idea while writing the above post and made this, the improved CC dark lancer... the chain lancer, this should alleviate any heat issues and provide good damage at CC range, armor is lower on the RA due to the limited space i get from putting the black ray gun in on this arm, but the chainsaw is well armored as well as the rest of the titan, now no worries unless your up against something that can pop you off before you get to it, using it along with a long range titan seems to be the awnser.

Yep, energy weapons recharge at a rate determined by their size and available PUs. So you really have to consider both heat and power for your energy titan's efficiency. Having good heat dissipation but an engine that can't keep up is pretty much a waste most of the time - not saying it's the case here, mind you. Of course, having too many weapons always has a minor benefit, if one is damaged or otherwise unable to fire, you don't actually lose much firepower.

I'll try to send you the latest version of the database in a couple of days, if you don't have it already. I'll also send you the latest version of the guide, it has some very useful info, it explains the engine thing. There's a link to an older version in the forums.

The weapons on a titan should go together, just like different titans (or weapons on them) should go together in your squad. I think a chainsaw goes nicely with a BRG as you can down your opponent with the latter, then finish him off with the CS. A chainsaw goes with flamethrowers too, for example they are both for about the same range. I don't know how well BRG goes with flamethrowers though... I'd probably ditch the latter and see if I can downgrade the engine, then fit in a 2nd chainsaw. I figure the idea with flamethrowers is to overpower your opponent with heat, thus you'd need at least 2 dark lancers for them to be effective. You'll need to concentrate on a small number of tactics at one time.

My close in guys are L and R mechs too. The maneuverability is a good thing if you need to get close, also I don't use jumpjets that much so my larger mechs end up being at longer range.

Each energy weapon takes a max of 3 PU, but not all the time - the version of the guide I have is vague on this. Say you have a big beam cannon that takes 19 PU to reload, the 2 first seconds it takes 3 PU/s and is down to 13 PU for the r/l, now it's treated like a smaller gun and takes 2 PU/s until it's down to 5 PU, after which it takes another 5s to finally be ready for the next *ZAP*. This means that an engine that will deliver 3 PU to just this gun will be overkill and some of those PUs will be wasted towards the end of the cycle. It's better to downgrade the engine and just fire your big energy weapons in a staggered pattern, you'll be more power efficient that way.

Also, I wouldn't worry if one armour slot has "10% too little". What gets actually hit depends on chance, so the damage distribution won't be even in any case. Overall efficiency of the design is more important.

Notice that there the LL for example recharges at the exact same time wether it has 2 or 3 PUs allocated, and some other weapons will only have recharge time increase by 1 sec if only allocated 2 PUs. Check the Choosing an Engine for Optimum Performance section in the guide, pag 8.

I have not been playing ToS for a while so pardon my rather long absence. It's one of those great games you just don't have time for sometimes, but always fun to come back and play. Anyways, on with some titan designs:

I hired a jock named Bob that was quite a bad shot with everything but energy weapons and was specialized in light titan piloting skill and damage control, happened to be my mechanic (a former civilian titan engineer at a salvage yard, operated and worked on cutting laser titans). As soon as he made it past rookie level I designed a light titan for him, initially it was called the SZL Nova and only had a BRG plus the two pulse lasers, continuous laser fire along with the BRG accumulate heat quickly so I decided on adding machine guns for some faster and less heat dependent damage output if overheating occurs, threats will likely be in machine gun range by the time significant heat accumulates. I toyed with idea of a Plasma cannon instead, but went with the BRG in favor of having no minimum range and less heat, I neglected the heat resistant armor in the legs because of armor and weight concerns. The design has a decent powerplant and heat regulator, as well as a number of standard defensive features including a light shield. The titans cockpit and torso are integrated, head and central torso armor are exceptional for a light titan, as well the back torso. A good design for an energy weapon jock, but not as devastating as I hoped.

This heavily armored light titan acts like a medium, has a good array of diverse weaponry scattered across its chassis and the targeting equipment to use it well. All ammunition based weapons are located in the arms with laser weapons on the torso, the flamethrower may potentially damage the titans power axe if the titan RA is heavily damaged, use its ammo as quickly as possible if under heavy fire and when in range. The armor all around is very good, any particular section of it will withstand the rigors of a firefight including the arms, legs, and lower torso. The back torso is slightly less armored than the Nova, but still good. Long range titans will piece it up a little, but once in full attack range it is hard to deal with. It does have a little medium range punch from the heavy meson gun, a good hit to the head of an enemy titan will get noticed and may disrupt an enemies ability to fight anywhere it penetrates. This titan was designed to be a light tank and lives up to its role nicely, in the right hands it can roll right through several enemy titans quickly. Close in attacking with meson gun as good opportunities arise, blast away until a weakness in the enemies armor appears then hack it off. Titans that fall down in front of this beast can quickly lose their head, good titan pilots should consider ramming if you have time to get a good scan, if it falls down be sure to administer head trauma. The SZL Enforcer doesn't have any extensive defense systems, the best defense is a good offense.

This is actually a less armored version of the SZL Enforcer geared more for accurate medium range combat and higher mobility, while still retaining a little of the CC punch for an "active" defense from CC titans. It keeps the heavy meson gun, but loses the flamethrower in place of an AC4. Engine, heat reduction, and energy weapon systems were downgraded in favor of jump jets and a top of the line battle computer, scanner is also slightly better. Ideally, this titan should follow closely behind the SZL Enforcer and provide support fire, it doesn't perform as well on its own. This titan should be able to fight for a while, but its offensive power will be significantly reduced once it runs out of ammo. It doesn't have as much punch and attempts to make up for that with accuracy, paired up with an Enforcer I tried to make a good head busting team. Beware of significant hits to the arms.
