Run out of things to research

I can see plasma rifles, grenades, etc. but I can't research them. They are grayed out. In fact, I've run out of things to research. There's nothing else I can research. Is this normal? Do I have to wait until some time limit elapses for more items show up in the research area?

I only have 6 bases and 6 lightning fighters. I'm attacked by scouts, fighters, and cruisers at my current level (if that helps). The toughest aliens I battle are the ones with the long arms and claws. They usually take me two shots to kill them.

Ok.  I understand now.  I had to capture a commander and interrogate it.  Now I can research more technologies.
