Damage From Enemy Ships Question.

Smugglers IV - Doomsday is a fun and challenging turn-based space-trading game where you take command of an advanced space ship amidst a galaxy torn by war and crime! Damage From Enemy Ships Question.

Every time I upgrade my guns to cause more damage the enemy gets an increases to their damage too. The problem is they always inflict more damage than I do. Is there any way to get ahead of the enemy in this game?
