SPACE PLANES

What are they good for? We are always short of money, and they aren't a prerequisite for anything - why buy?

Hello wegman,

For NASA, the X-15 might be useful to get a head start against your opponent and be the first to achieve the 'Man in space' goal. For the Soviets, the PKA might be useful to develop a cheaper option than Vostok that not only allows you to achieve the 'Man in space' goal, but also 'Man in orbit'. Notice that the game is quite light on pre-requisites so, technically, there's nothing stopping you from opening advanced programs such as Apollo early in the game.

Cheers,
