Is the game worth buying now ?

Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge is a turn-based strategy that puts you command of a squad of specialists for hire in the genre’s biggest game-world yet: the African country Diamond Coast. Diamond Coast is a playground for the cruel and corrupt, each with their own agenda. Choose your friends wisely and buy an army of ruthless mercenaries to unleash mayhem on your foes. Choose “jobs” from different factions and complete them for cash to upgrade your weapons and hire more elite soldiers of fortune.

Is the game worth buying now ?

Post by PDiFolco »

Hi
I'm a JA2 fan (still playing 1.13 which keeps improving 10+yrs after initial release !), when HG was released here I had a look at the posts and somr external reviews and decided not getting it - game too hard, unrealistic gun combat, overpowered enemies ...
All this gave me the feeling of a rather badly designed and finished game... So well, after a couple patch are the most glaring problem fixed and is the game more enjoyable?
There's also now some "competition" with 7.62 now available in Europe through GG, has someone tried it, and how does both games compare- themselves and with JA2 ?

Edit : just looked at the tech req, man they're steeper than I thought ! I only have an Athlon 2400XP and a 128MB GF6600, they're below reqs, will the game be playable on this ?

If you got the money to spend then go ahead. I played breggade e5 the jagged edge which I think is the first game before 7.62 game. Too bad europe gets all the intresting games and the usa gets simple repetitive stuff :(

This game not really hard, you just gotta have a lot of patience and hope the enemy a bad shot lol

Well, despite having a rig that I am pretty sure is in spec, I have never been able to get it to run. And I haven't found Sean's responsiveness to my queries, and posts to be particularly good.

I still don't have a game I can play, which is very unusual for a Matrix game. So, on that basis I'd say don't buy.

But then again, I have been fairly casual about trying to get it to run, meaning I have not been hounding Sean with questions and stuff. But then again, that is the point I guess.

Hmmm, not very encouraging, one suggests I spend money and get some patience instead - I do have money, but no patience ! [;)] - and the other just can't run the game with an in-spec comp, whereas mine isn't! [:-][:D]
I played a bit of Brigade E5 and found it quite bad and uninteresting ... if it's in the same vein I'll pass.

Okay, Sean got back to me; you can buy it now [:D]

Seriously though, this is the only time I've had anything come remotely close to be slow at Matrix, and in fact, it is in large part cause I have not pushed on it. I'm really not displeased; the fact that it still did not work till now is in large part cause I did not bug Sean about getting back to me. But I did figure my little comment would remind Sean that he needed to get back to me [;)]

My laptop is kinda close to the boundary for spec for the game, and it is possible I'll never get it to work on this machine, so you might want to keep that in mind. Anyway, I got this souped up desktop thatI never have realy taken the time to get running --just too lazy-- if nothing else I'm confident I'll get it to run on that thing (eventually).

ADDIT: It is even more mea culpa that I let on before. It seems the last time I thought I had updated my vidi drivers on this machine, I actually had just DLed the drivers . . . Doh! . . . You gotta INSTALL them too!

So, the last time I tried to run the game and it failed may well have been my own boneheadedness about thinking I had installed new drivers when in fact I hadn't. Beyond that, I cannot recall if it was actually waiting to hear back from Sean or not. Might've just been totally me . . . in which, sorry for the bad comment Sean!

Will let you guys know if I get it to run on this laptop now that I actually DID update the video drivers.

Hey Sean here is my DxDiag on my hot new Desktop that I finally got set up with wireless today after months of it sitting idle. Should HG work on this rig, or do I need to update drivers or what?

You'll need to install the proper graphics drivers for whatever card is in the machine (DXDiag couldn't ID it).
There's also no sound card being picked up. If your board has a built-in sound card you may have to turn it on in BIOS, then update the drivers.

If you get those sorted the game should run ok depending on the graphics card you have - your CPU looks like it'll handle it fine.

Thanks Deathifier

Yeah, I did get my video card drivers updated and voila! Hired Guns works like a charm (at least the visual part).

Very helpful your comment about the sound card too. Last thing I was fiddling with trying to figure out before I went to bed (and then woke up from indigestion just now) was why I was getting no sound.

Sounds like I need to make sure my sound drivers are turned on in Bios and then install the drivers. Thanks!

Hey you guys, I'm still having issues with my machine. I have installed virtually everything on my two disks and also gone to the sites for my mobo and vid card (is 'VGA' an acronmy for video card?). In sum, I'm fairly certain that I have installed and updated all drivers. I have also checked in my Bios to make sure that the audio stuff is on. As far as I can tell it is.

But I'm still not getting any sound. Any real obvious reason why that might be?

One thing that maybe (?) is contributing is that there are actually two hard drives on there, a C: drive (the original from the original mobo that was in the case, and on which none of my games installed now seem to work as I guess their registry stuff is all screwed up?) and an E: drive which is like a 400 GB drive upgrade. I'm using the E: as the master and that is the OS I'm running and also the location to which all these utilities and drivers are installing. However, there is still an XP OS copy on the C: drive too. Maybe that is somehow screwing it up?

I suppose it is possible that my mobo does not have an integral sound card, but I really don't think so. There is a line for a Realtek HD audio driver package on the MSI disk.

If posting a screen shot or my upgraded Dxdiag or anything would help you to help me to sort this out, I'd be eternally grateful.

If windows can't detect the sound card hardware trying to install the drivers for it won't do anything and yes, VGA is video.
When I got my MSI board the on-board sound was disabled by default (why, I have no idea) and I had to find and enable it. If I recall right it was simply labelled "HD Audio", one entry buried amongst dozens of others, so if your board has it disabled by default then it'll need to be turned on.

According to your DXDiag you have a MS-7390 board from MSI, which seems to be named K9N SLI-F V.2 and has integrated audio.
A quick search for problems did turn up someone with a similar issue in 2007 which was resolved by resetting CMOS.

All resetting would do is reset the BIOS settings to default and, if you haven't been fiddling with them (e.g. overclocking), then it is an option to keep in mind if you still can't get it to work. There is one potential issue though - if you've changed the boot order for your drives (which sounds possible, reading the next paragraph) then you'll need to set them up in their current order again or it may boot into your old copy of windows instead.

Maybe that is somehow screwing it up?

If it is installing everything to E by default then I'd say it's booting to the copy of windows on the E drive and everything should be fine - the copy on C, as far as windows is concerned, doesn't exist however you could probably still boot to it.

If posting a screen shot or my upgraded Dxdiag or anything would help you to help me to sort this out, I'd be eternally grateful.

If, under the "DXDiag Notes" of the saved output it is still saying "No sound card was found." then it won't help, esp. if you got the video going ok and the game actually runs.

Hey guys, I finally got this thing running! AWESOME game. _How_ I got it to run, I have no idea. I seem to have just had to install all drivers three times, and then update all drivers twice! [:D]

Having stayed up till 2AM checking this thing out last night I will say this about buying it: if you have a machine that is in spec, you should DEFINITELY BUY IT!! Very cool.

We now return you to your regularly unhijacked thread.

USA people can buy 7.62 at GamersGate, as I did. I got it for 50% off sale at GG too.

Does 7.62 run for you OK? or is it buggy. I am very tempted to order it from GG.

Ah forget it, Gamers Gate does not accept straight credit card purchases like Matrix. Only paypal which I won't do, and I certainly won't use "click and buy" with all of their hidden service fees.

I haven't played it much but I did install some unofficial patch and mods that fix supposed issues. From what I have played so far it was worth what it cost me. GG accepts straight CC purchase. There are no hidden fees. I only use CC and have bought a few games from them with no issues.
