Ralf was on holiday for a week then I had issues with my new internet provider, but we back now.

Its mid November. Main news is that Allies have captured Lae and a CV battle (of sorts) took place with bad results for the IJN. The KB, which has been lurking around Rabual for weeks finally launched a series of poorly co-ordinated strikes at max range against my CVs which are busy covering invasion fleets. Flying into a 300 Hellcat CAP all his a/c went down for no result, about 200 Vals and Kates, which I guess is almost half of the available strike a/c on the KB. Meanwhile my 4E and 2E bombers have closed Rabual airfield and will continue to do so. His fighters have done reasonably well considering the stage the game is at, but he most have few high exp pilots left.

Points gap is down to 2000, and I think this will be even by the end of the month. Ralf will just have to gritt his teeth and hope for the best now...........

yeah, situation deteriorated for the the Empire. After weeks of roaming the seas, fruitlessly using up now precious fuel and accumulating wear&tear damage, I decided to go in finally. Wrongly I guessed Paul is sending his forces to Gasmata, for a final assault on Rabaul. But instead he went NW for Wewak, so my fleet ended up at extreme strike range. About 250 A/C lost for nothing, amongst them about the half of the elite units still alive.

Rabaul is effectively dead as Airbase, closed by some bold raids. It´s really getting dirty now. Very annoying after all.

after the recent debacle I sent my still strong surface fleet towards Wewak, in order to crush the allied invasion fleet.
The night battle went well, but then Pauls carriers launched some deadly strikes on my fleeing ships... BB HIEI gone, along with some cruisers and ecorts. Many others damaged. Overall rather a disappointing result, given this was the final battle.

Wewak will fall soon, Gasmata is in allied hands already. Looks like Paul will achieve victory at the end of the game. No wonder after a bold and smart 1943 play.

the last two turns saw some carrier action NE of Kavieng. KB launched some nice bold strikes that sunk BUNKER HILL plus at least one CVL and one CVE. 2nd day strikes hit VICTORIOUS and consorts. She should be dead as well, along with a few small flattops.
Own damage almost none, since the allied strikes aimed mostly for my crawling surface vessels. MUSASHI is in a very bad shape. At least Tokyo sends a last batch of heavy ships, 2 BBs with cruisers and DDs are announced coming down from Japan. Too little too late I´d say.
However, all this couldn´t prevent Paul from taking Wewak and Gasmata, and landing at Kavieng and Buna as well! There are much too many fires burning everywhere, which I can´t fight let alone extinguish. He is leading about 500 points already.

Yep, thanks to the famous "React one hex despite being ordered not to react" bug I have managed to lose half of my remaining carrier strength.

Four separate air combat TFs all set to follow one another, first day one of them reacts a hex (and therefore loses 75% of its CAP) and is pretty much destroyed. Second day the same thing happens to another TF with similar results. Bunker Hill and Victorious along with 5 or 6 CVL/E all gone. Meanwhile almost all of my strike a/c go after already dead BBs or transports. If the game was not so close to the end I would have thrown in the towel after the above turn played out.

Credit to Ralf for being able to preserve his CVs this far into the game and pull off the latest victory, but I really feel the dice rolls and bugs have all been against me in this game. As I said to Ralf, UV is all about enemy flightdecks sunk and my forces have failed miserably this game. A win on points is looking likely, but irrelevant to me.[8|]

despite the IJN strength before Paul launched his invasion tour, it´s kinda allied landslide now. He took Hoskins, Gasmata, Momote, Saidor, Madang, Fischhafen, Kavieng and Wewak. Rabaul is my last base in this vicinity, but effectively out of action.

I sent out KB again, with filled up airgroups. However, these crappy IJN pilots you get in late 1943 are nothing but cannon fodder. Lost about 100 (!) during an attack against two transports and a minesweeper which had no CAP overhead... At least they managed to sink these vessels somehow.

Two shellings of Kavieng from my BBs caught some allied DDs, but otherwise it was a rather disappointing commitment.

Tokyo decided to sent a dozen transports down to me, about the last thing I need now. Such slow ducks can´t survive in these hostile waters anyway.

Still a little bit more than three weeks to go, and point gap is already 2000 in Pauls favour by now...

a small bright light occured recently: I could repel an allied invasion try at Vila. Otherwise, overall situation quite dark...

Mid December and Rabual falls to the Allies, and with that Ralf resigned. Points difference was about 7000 in my favour at the end (due to him losing 2700 and myself gaining 2700 for Rabual).

However, this was an empty victory for me. I lost the vast majority of my CVs whilst not sinking any in return. Losses in BBs/CAs etc were about even. All the old UV bugs appeared at one stage or another, and the "sync bug" meant I had to rely on the text combat report for the actual story of each turn. Not the best way to finish my UV career, but it has brought me many hours of entertainment over the 7 years I have played it, so it will be missed.........

Congratulations to Ralf for putting up an excellent fight for so long, he did want a rematch but I have simply worn this game out now. Hope he finds another opponent soon.
