I thought I play around with the MapMaker. The US SRTM data is 3x the resolution of Europe so some pretty high res maps can be made. I tried my hand at making a map of Avalon Harbor Catalina Is. A nice holiday spot here in So. Cal.

Lets see how far they get this time.

And after watching the news tonight, I'd be careful of all that smoke! (wildfire season seems to be in full swing up there).

Thanks

back from vacation...i need a vacation from our vacation. 1900 miles, 3 states, 2 days in yellowstone and 3 different water parks.....in 6 days[X(]

Wasn't close enough to see the flames from the wildfires but the smoke sure covered the area, alot of Idaho is hazy and one of the passes in washington is closed due to wildfires. I've already made it known...daddy is on full rest duty today......with PCO[:D]....well that is after costco and fixing up the garden after being gone.....don't think they understand the concept of full rest duty

Well dammit....marginal loss......AGAIN. The hunting was good, i did keep my losses pretty low but just ran out of luck and time.......Damn stugs. Well i played that one 3 and 1/2 times to learn the controls, time for a different scenario....that one kicked my ass.Anybody have any favorites to recommend, I like medium to small engagments. Here's some final screens.

Yeah the first is my own damn plane killing a stug..bad omen there. I did get to flamethrower a unit.

that map is really tough. and friendly fire doesnt help!

I have a few that I like - but if you haven't played the boot camp scenarios yet, I'd really encourage you to give them a go.

I started the "Battles for Mcensk" campaign.... 4th panzer division in 41

If you look between those trees at the edge of the map you can't tell but those are 3 T34's .I'm not sure how this is going to work out, i have about 7 tanks bouncing shots off those T34's, might have to work around to the right for some kind of side shot......shot after shot is bouncing off straight on.So far being the firstest with the mostest isn't paying off.

I finished the first battle of the campaign. When we last left our hero his tanks were trading shots with T-34's

I get one.....they get one.

So i keep moving forward. I've secured the first flag at the crossroads and send 2 halftracks loaded with infantry to scout and maybe secure the flag on my left. 1 halftrack got taken out by a T-34. I secure the flag on my left while taking fire from the buildings......when O shit....3 more T-34's on the left road. I have no tanks in position to fire on the T-34's, I try to withdraw the halftracks.1 Doesn't get away. Meanwhile i work a couple of tanks forward and right for some side shots on the T-34's on the center road while my other tanks keep firing.

Halftrack blasted, the troops that bail last about 5 turns before dying from the fire from the houses. The only infantry i lose in this battle.

What i didn't know at the time was the T-34's on the center road were knocked out. My 2 tanks that worked for the side shots were pretty far forward and as it turned out way over extended when 2 KV's showed up on my right SURPRISE... SURPRISE. I had did some minor scouting toward the right but not enough it seems. So it's fighting withdrawal time. I had 1 other tank with LOS to the KV's but it was basically 2 vs 2 .
I was getting off 2 or 3 shots to 1 and must of bounced 30 -40 shots off the frontal armor while withdrawing.

So I'm withdrawing everything within LOS of the KV's... everything is bouncing off....I think there immobile but i'm not sure they haven't moved in a couple turns..nothing wrong with their guns though. My squad who holds the flag on left dies and i lose the flag. I'm trying to disengage my infantry on my left from foxhole clearing duty to make a move on the flag on the left.....and i'm wondering where the T-34's on the left are haven't seen them for a few turns.

screens

A return shot from one of the KV's kicks up dust...every time they fire i'm holding my breath hoping they miss, while my shots continue to bounce off.Around turn 35 i manage to work 3 tanks around for a side shot on the KV .....guess what.......bounce,bounce,bounce.Scenario ends on turn 37 with one more of my tanks getting knocked out by a KV. I never regain the flag on the left which results in a minor defeat.

My mistakes were not scouting the right enough, i wasn't close to prepared to respond to anything coming from the right. I should of reinforced the left flag. it was tough, i didn't have much infantry transport except 3 half tracks and my tanks which i unloaded when they engaged with the T-34's so my infantry was slow coming up and getting held up by troops in foxholes. I used the smaller tanks P-38's i believe to help clear the foxholes and support the infantry. They would of been useless against the T-34's and KV's. My losses 4 tanks, 2 halftracks, 1 infantry unit. I take out 4 enemy tanks and numerous enemy infantry squads and 2 Mg's.

On to battle #2
as a side note I think the withdrawal order needs to be a suborder of all the orders so you can use it to back off with one tank. Sometimes you want to reposition a tank without turning
