At the beginning of the game I made a few Q-ship conversions. In retrospect they probably would have been much more useful as AMCs, but since I have them now I may as well use them. Admiral Halstead is the first to see action. One of the things I'm starting to like about Qs is they can carry 1000 cargo, as this particular ship is, so you can carry supplies, an entire air group, or a small part of an LCU while adding to a convoy's escort. Or, unlike this case, you can send them out alone, and try to blow away subs that try to sink them with their deck guns.

IJN BB in trouble. Landing in Aleutians

Post by Connfire »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/29/23

News reports from Japan – “Thousands of candles are lit up tonight praying for survival of one of our proudest and most beautiful dreadnoughts, that's barely holding on to its life”. This is the first indication to the rest of the world that an IJN BB is in trouble after the Battle of Midway.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/30/23

Headline in today’s London Times – “Were Japanese South China Sea Wargames a Ruse or Threat”? China swears to Japan it did not leak any information about the classified wargames which were supposed to take place about the time of the Battle of Midway. The paper cites “unnamed sources with in our (the UK) government” for its information.

Thousands line the shores of Tokyo Bay, as BB Nagato limps into port under tow. It is obvious to even untrained observers that she has a dangerous starboard list. With great effort, tugboats move her near a drydock. Repair ships surround the vessel in an attempt to correct her list enough so she can safely enter the drydock. Other boats remove her crew. The scene continues until nightfall shrouds it further view.

Just before midnight, people living near the area hear sirens and horns, and a great commotion from the shipyard. Daybreak reveals a shocking sight - the battleship Nagato has completely capsized at her mooring.

All of Japan is mourning. In the days and weeks that follow many journey Tokyo Bay to see the forlorn sight themselves, and the closest unsecured shoreline area starts to take the appearance of a shrine (years after the war, it would be the site of the Nagato Memorial Museum). Many light candles, offer prayers, and vow revenge against the American enemy.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/03/23

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The battleships New York and Arizona left Midway today, under heavy escort.

After the Battle of Midway, New York was reduced to a floating wreck, with 98 system damage. Arizona suffered over 80 system damage, and was also flooding badly. Her sister ship, Pennsylvania, miraculously escaped damage, and stood guard against raids (I had no idea at the time BB Nagato was in so much trouble). Immediately following the battle, AR Prometheus and AR Liberty (a recently converted AK) were rushed to Midway at full speed from Pearl Harbor with heavy escort. I tried to set them on a course with the least chance of enemy contact, but they actually encountered 3 submarines on the way, sinking one and badly damaging the other two. By the time they arrived, BB Arizona’s floatation damage was at 69 and climbing. Thanks to the timely arrival of the ARs, the flooding slowly receded, until after several turns finally both sailed left for a classified shipyard.

As the squadron slowly departed Midway, all hands manned the rails and saluted the shattered, visible wrecks of BB Nevada, which is a total loss near the mouth of the harbor, BB Oklahoma, which is capsized near the beach, as well as the other battleships which lie beneath the waves. It will be a long time before either dreadnought is back in action, but at least they survived. ARs Prometheus and Liberty are the unsung heroes of the battle, and just as Midway will be forever remembered as one of the US Navy’s worst defeats, so to will the ordeal of the USS Arizona be remembered as one of the Navy’s great survival stories.

International tensions rise...

Post by Connfire »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/10/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Japanese government formally protests the Four Powers Defense Pact between the Dutch, British, Chinese, and French as biased and grounded in prejudice rather than facts.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/11/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Four Powers reply that since the Pact is defensive in nature, Japan has nothing to fear unless it plans on going on the offensive. They also remind both Japan and the USA that neither power has responded to the League of Nations resolution calling for a cessation of hostilities in Asia and the Pacific.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/12/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By this time, Japanese spies have confirmed the presence of European troops in Canton, Hangchow, and Foochow. They do not detect any American presence anywhere in Asia (except for the League of Nations mandated 15th Infantry Regiment which has been squatting in Tientsin since 1920).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/13/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Japanese government states it believes that the League of Nations mandate for American troops in Tientsin no longer applies now that USA is at war, and asks for their withdrawal.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/14/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Four Powers asks the USA to remove its troops from Tientsin, and for Japan to withdraw its troops from Shanghai, so they can be replaced with British, French, and Chinese units.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/15/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a major foreign policy speech before a joint session of Congress, President Warren Harding recognizes the right for China and Asian colonial powers to form the Four Powers Defense Pact. He states that China has a right to engage in whatever alliances it deems necessary to protect itself.

He pledges before the American people that while not a League member, the USA will honor the recent League of Nations resolution and not engage in offensive action against any Asian power which has not attacked it. He reminds the world that the USA is not the aggressor in this conflict.

However, now that China is part of the Four Powers Defense Pact, having warring factions within the country risks igniting another Great War. He has received assurances of safe passage from the Royal Navy for US troops withdrawn from Tientsin. With that in mind, he states that he will begin withdrawal immediately, once he receives confirmation of the following conditions:

1. The Japanese completely withdraw from Shanghai.
2. The Japanese reduce land forces in Tsingtao and Port Arthur to a token force (1 LCU).
3. The League of Nations agrees to send peacekeeping forces to help protect China, if it so asks.

China asks for immediate withdrawal of US forces and Japanese forces from its territory. It guarantees the safety of the US 15th Infantry Regiment from Tientsin to Hong Kong, by rail. The United Kingdom makes a similar pledge for safe transport from Hong King to US territory utilizing the Royal Navy. Japanese forces are asked to quit Shanghai, and reduce their forces to 1 regiment in Tsingtao and Port Arthur, via ship. China further asks the US not to harass withdrawing Japanese troops with their submarines.

Lastly, China asks the League of Nations for peacekeeping troops for its protection. Britain and France immediately state they will offer troops for this mission, while Holland states it will provide support for the operation.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/18/23

Prime Minister Andrew Bonar Law finds some disturbing intellegence on his desk this morning.

The State Department says US forces will withdraw from Tientsin when there is clear indication Japan is withdrawing as requested. They further state that US submarines will not attack Japanese ships in Chinese territorial waters.

Benito Mussolini announces Italy will send troops for a peacekeeping mission to China if requested by the League of Nations. He receives no reply. [:)]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/19/23

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is a cold, foggy, rainy night in London:

The Japanese ambassador is summoned to 10 Downing Street, where he meets with Prime Minister Andrew Bonar Law, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lord Curzon, and War Secretary Lord Derby. With an ashen face, the PM states:

"It was our sincere hope that forming the Four Powers Defense Pact would discourage the Asian war from spreading to China or our colonies. Now the Chinese ambassador informs us that Japanese troops from Tsingtao have seized a key rail junction 120 miles inside Chinese territory. As you know, we and two other nations have a defense pact with China".

Lord Curzon then interjects "And we intend to honor our commitments".

The PM continues: "This aggression must stop now. Inform your government that for the sake of world peace, you must immediately withdraw your Army".

Lord Derby then states "We will give you one hour to communicate with your government. We await your response".

The Japanese reply that a matter of this importance would have to be queried by air mail only, with 18 days to reach the emperor.

After a long silence, Prime Minster Law says. “Very well, that will be all for now”. As the Japanese ambassador walks out, he hears Lord Curzon pick up a telephone and say to the operator “Paris. Get me President Poincaré. Wake him up if you have to”.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/20/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leading British, French, and Dutch newspapers are carrying variants of the headline “War Warning!” The three country’s leaders will be making joint statements in their respective countries tomorrow at noon, local time.

The British, French, and Dutch ambassadors to Tokyo jointly request an urgent audience with the Emperor. If that is not possible, then the Prime Minister, within 48 hours. They have been empowered to act on behalf of their governments.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/21/23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The British, French, and Dutch heads of state all make similar speeches, though the British version is quite notable:

British Prime Minister Andrew Bonar Law’s speech is before an anxious crowd in Trafalgar Square. Carried live on the BBC wireless to most of the English speaking world, his speech reads: “Less than 10 years ago, the civilized nations of the world banded together to save the world from aggression. Japan was a part of that Grand Alliance, and we even had a mutual defense treaty which lasted for decades. Japan’s losses in the Great War were comparatively small compared to ours. Because of this, Japan did not seem to learn the horrible lessons that many others, such as our nation, had to learn through our own blood.

Regretfully, Japan appears to be taking the same course taken by Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1914. Even before she was emboldened by her defeat of the United States Navy, we received indications that her long-term plans included attacking European colonies in the Far East. The Japanese even went so far as to call us ‘barbarians’ while trying to bully China into stationing their troops into major cities, for reasons that could only be offensive against us. So intimidated was China that they asked, and we, France, and Holland accepted, a request for a mutual defense pact…”

(BBC Announcer) “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Prime Minister appears somewhat overcome at this point, as he is swaying at the podium. It is odd how often he seems to need to clear his throat. One of his aides is approaching…but wait, he has resumed talking”.

“…We had hoped, I had hoped, this would persuade Japan that further aggression was against its national interest”.

(Another long pause – BBC announcer “The Prime Minister seems very troubled at the moment”) “…but we have failed. I have failed. The Japanese have seized a key rail junction 120 miles inside of Chinese territory. Japanese ships have been sighted off Hong Kong. All forces of the Four Powers Pact are on alert, and will fire upon any Japanese troops or ships that threaten our countries. We are on the brink of war. I urge the Japanese leaders and Emperor Taisho not to drag our nations into another Great War. (Another long pause). The British people, none of the world’s peoples, deserve this. (A few seconds of indecipherable words from the PM) I never expected I would be a wartime Prime Minister. I…”

(Gargling sounds are heard, then a long pause, and growing sounds of alarm in the crowd come over the radio).

BBC Announcer – “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Prime Minister has fallen at the podium. He is being attended to. His hand its at his throat. We cannot tell exactly what happened, but the crowd is becoming extremely agitated. Police and soldiers are filing into the Square, and an ambulance is trying to approach the reviewing stand. It looks like…what's happening over there?...yes?...very well. Ladies and Gentlemen, we will update the situation in Trafalgar Square as more information becomes available, but for now return to our regular programming…”

Prime Minister Andrew Bonar Law has been admitted to the hospital. He is reportedly anxious to get back to work, but he is being evaluated for further tests. Several disturbances broke out in Trafalgar Square after the Prime Minister collapsed, but they were quickly squelched by the police and army. About two dozen anarchists who were holding peace signs and chanting anti-government slogans were beat up badly by the crowd before they were whisked away in police lorries. Most, but not all, have been released from police custody. Despite this, government sources indicate that the Prime Minister collapsed for health reasons – he was not attacked in any way.

European ambassadors receive a messenger rather than an audience; the messenger informs them that the Tientsin issue is no longer worth of Europe's attention and Japan wishes nothing but peace with the British, Dutch, and French. The British and Dutch ambassadors react with stoic silence, while the French ambassador very undiplomatically shouts “Tell you superiors we are serious! Do you think your country can stand against the whole world? Do you want to learn the same lesson as Germany? We are near the end, here!”

China reports Japanese troops continue to move deeper into its territory.

Troops from France and Belgium cross the German border, and begin occupation of the industrialized Ruhr region. They meet almost no resistance. France states the occupation should come as no surprise to anyone, as Germany has been delinquent in paying its coal reparations 35 out of the last 37 months, and is also behind on timber and other reparations. The occupation was planned for last month, but was put on hold due to rising tension in the Far East. But reparations are needed now more then ever. Prime Minister Poincaré later admits that the operation had been planned for months, but also states he “…hopes other rogue nations are paying attention”.

With his voice raspy and emotional, Prime Minister Andrew Bonar Law addresses Parliament. He apologizes for “being weak” during his speech nine days before, as well as for his failure to prevent England from another war. He announces he has been diagnosed with terminal throat cancer, and regrets that his body is up to the rigors of being a wartime Prime Minister. He further reveals that his resignation was accepted by King George V this morning, and urges the nation to rally behind its new Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, during this time of crisis.

There is a large concentration of IJN ships 1 hex SW of Hong Kong - lots of AMCs and some BBs too. Looks like he's trying to repeat his success at Midway with the Royal Navy.

Historically Ikoma was originally classified as a CA, but in 1912 was reclassified a BC. She had 4 12" guns, and could steam over 20 knots. In World War I, she often operated with the Royal Navy out of Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia. Her sister, Tsukuba, blew up in 1917 after her ammunition magazine caught fire at Yokosuka.

Well, at the beginning of the game I thought losing a dreadnought BB would have been one of the worst things that could happen. I guess after subsequently losing 8 BBs in one turn, losing another didn't have quite the same impact as it would have before. Looks like Kaga got beat up a bit, but she'll probably be fine. Here's a picture of Benbow, taken from the Iron Duke, just as the battle was starting, with Emperor of India and Marlborough behind her. [;)]
