Battle Reports as a Text File

Frank Hunter's Campaigns on the Danube is an operational study of the campaigns along the Danube in 1805 and 1809. Campaigns on the Danube's system focuses on trying to present the player with the same sort of decisions placed on their historical counterparts; how to feed an army and move that army according to a plan, all the while trying to fight a campaign. There is also an option to allow players to play out the battles with miniatures and input the results.

Battle Reports as a Text File

Post by Rasputitsa »

When you have FOW set and I use 'Hidden Enemy' you see no strength information on the counters of enemy units, which is fine, but after a battle the final Battle Report panel has a report on what happened during the rounds of the battle, including which units were involved, their strength and what happened, if routed.

This information is useful and valid, as a Napoleonic battle was close up and personal, with fighting at close quarters.

The Battle Report can be scanned on the right side of the panel, but is lost when the panel is closed and if you have several battles in one turn, it is difficult to assess what has happened in each case.

I have been taking screen shots of the battle panels to be able to refer back.

Having played this game for many years and never realised that you can copy the battle text out of the game. [8|]

Just mouse highlight all the text, <right-click> 'copy' and drop into a text file, I am using 'Notepad'.

The image shows a small battle, so it's not much information, but it shows the strength of the enemy French units and the hits they inflicted on my Austrian unit. The data on your own unit counter, as to strength remaining and losses, completes the picture.

This is much more important in a bigger battle, where you need to decide whether to engage again the next day, go onto the defensive, or try to withdraw and escape. Very difficult when you have little idea what happened to the enemy units, unless you have the battle report to go through in some detail.

Here is the copied text file from a bigger battle report, as after besieging ULM and waiting for other units to join him, NAPOLEON has launched an attack on ULM. The detail in this report is difficult to digest when still in the game screen, but important in deciding what to do next.

With 18 out of 25 Austrian units routed and only 2 French, it is not a difficult decision, but you need to be able to refer to the battle report in detail to know, especially when the results are not so conclusive and where there are other battle screens to interpret.

Battle of ULM, 17th October 1805. - text lifted from the battle panel and copied into 'Notepad'.

Note: I knew that Desjardins would be joining the battle for the French after the first round, as notified in the pre-battle screen (had 'To the guns' set), and chose 'Escalating Assault', so that the French battle intensity would increase when all units were present from round 2 onward.

So there is a lot of information in the game, which just needs to be viewed and a text file gives you the opportunity to review battle reports in more detail, whilst still being able to move on to the main battle map.
