A turn that saw a incredibly stupid move by me. I send 1/3 of a corps into Siangtan from the Hex SE of it.
But that hex side was owned by Japan and they did a shock attack and that almost completely wiped the
unit out. Live and learn. For some reason I think I was of the opinion that my having a large AS in the hex
would mean it would not do a shock attack. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

Another bombardment attack at Changsha.
Again I think it about a tie.

Another bombardment attack at Changsha
I am not sure how to score this. At first glance I took 11.6 times the casualties that he took.
But, I do not think the casualties number takes into account the loss of 8 guns and 2 vehicles.
also the 12 guns and 6 vehicles disabled. I have no idea what was lost by him, but I really think
it is about a draw again.

I landed the Americal Division at Lunga, there are no enemy forces there.

We tangled in the air over hex 81,53, SW of Changsha
I lost 5 P-40B, 3 air-2-air and 2 ops write offs.
He lost none, he is using Zeros to sweep.
I put my P-40Bs up high to see if they can do better, these
are seasoned AVG pilots. I lost 2 of these fine pilots.

Important items to note.
  • Many of my aircraft were too far away from Kirakira to divert and ended up as ops losses.
  • I had at least 7 write offs, these were listed in the ops report.
  • We lost about the same in dive bombers.
  • He lost a lot more torpedo bombers than I did, mostly dueto flak.
  • The interesting item is that he lost 19 Zeros in air-2-air while I only lost 9 due to air-2-air.
  • I had complete coordination while his strikes were quite uncoordinated in the morning phase.
The only ship listed as sunk is BB Fuso. But there are no float planes listed as lost, so probably didn't sink, yet.

I still have 4 operational CVs, Yorktown, Saratoga, Indomitable, and Formidable.
I also now have 3 powerful SCTFs, one with 4 British BB Vangards, and the other with 3 New Jersey BBs.
Both have been sent on full speed missions to try and intercept KB. Maybe one will connect.
My CVs will exit the area at this time and see what happens

Interesting turn, but some greif.

CV Enterprise did not make it, just too much even for good Allied Damage Control.
Neither of my SCTFs made contact, he moved one hex to the West, that was unexpected.

But, according to Tracker Japan lost 9 aircraft on the ground, 3 Zero, 3 Kate, and 3 Val. Sounds like he also lost a CV.

Here is a screenshot of the area.

Notice that KB is not showing many aircraft available. Also he launched strikes against my two SCTFs and they were weak.

I would guess Soryu as the most likely IJN CV to have sunk.
It hurts to lose Enterprise but I bet KB will miss those Kate and Val pilots even more for the rest of the war!

Good luck with the intercept efforts - don't forget the FPs on night search so you can get a react (and patrol orders for the TFs so they do react!).

One problem is that the Vangards do not have float planes. The New Jerseys do.

Do they need to have patrol orders? I am learning a number of things I never gave a thought to.

I will use BBFanboy's information about putting my SCTFs on patrol.

Moving the DS West and and a hex North, I should get another shot at KB

Yes - the surface combat react only works if the TF is patrolling. If you just set a point to cruise to and have retirement orders, the TF would have to get lucky to bump into the enemy. Reacting to a FP contact is much more likely to bring success.

That is probably why my SCTF intercepts have not worked over the years.

I have all three TFs patrolling the same hex, 2 hexes WNW of KBs current position. I have the New Jersey FPs doing night
Naval Search and the DS has SBDs for daytime search. Tomorrow I find out if that worked.

If it's not too late I'd station some PBYs at Lunga or one of the empty dot bases in the thick of the action (e.g. Munda), maybe one squadron on day and one on night patrol. You can sneak in an AVD or fly in some aviation support by PBY in a turn or two to take care of maintenance.

I have a PBY on Kirakira with coverage for most of the area. There is also a PBY at Townville covering some more of the area. I do not have any PBYs on night patrol.

Normally I would not think this did much. But there were sinking sounds soon after and there was a Pete listed
as destroyed on the ground. And, I have a BB TF in that hex and there is no TF shown in that hex or any around it.

I do not see any TFs in the area, but Woodlark Island has an anchor symbol, I am going to do a Naval Bombardment with
a CA led TF in the area and send a recon aircraft over the base to see what might be there. The DS will stand by and wait to
see what develops.

In an badly conceived idea I tried a DA at Siangtan thinking that he would be low on supply and there are no terrain bonus
in the hex. It was disaster.

Nice work finishing off those cripples! Those two BBs were damaged in the earlier battles, including 2 or 3 torp hits apiece IIRC. A few more bombs sinking them is quite believable.
I would suspect the weather of preventing FP launch and therefore preventing DL on the enemy BBs by your TF. Pity! BB vs BB confrontations are so rare! :(

Anticlimactic turn, nut much really happened.

I got a good Naval Bombardment of Woodlark Island, but no ships are showing in the harbor.

Ground Bombardment Attack at Changsha, about equal.

Aerial bombings at Siangtan, little damage, some disablements.

Night Naval Attacks from Rabaul, no hits.

I can only assume that he has put his salvageable CVs into another TF and vacated the area.
I am going to leave also, my ships and air units need some extensive work. Also it is hard
to do many Naval ops at this time, I am low on fuel just about everywhere in the South Pacific,
it takes time to transport it from the West Coast to the bases that need it.
