Uuu, now we will see tough air battle over Johnston Island. With elite Allied pilots, and brand new airframes. It is actually within B17 range, from Pearl Harbor, but all B17s are in the west.
Get Yamato, and bombard, bombard (but watch out for mines)! Lets see, how CVs sink from largest naval guns in the world [:D]

Thx VSWG!

Yep, you're right inqistor, but Johnston Isl is a size 2 AF and we should be able to tangle with what fighters Andy can send in.
The Hornet was a big burning bonfire; nothing worse than huge fires so I'm expecting it to have sunk or be in sinking condition.

This turn the battle flared to life again, have to break the report into sub parts again.
I've never experienced such heavy sub activity in my UV-WitP-AE career!

2 carriers are sunk by subs this turn; firstly the Wasp is finished by 3 hits and slips beneath the waves.
Then Andy gets his consolation prize [:(]

The Kaga is harassed and hit repeatedly by 3 different subs by no less than 8!!!! torpedoes and goes to the bottom, taking all her ac with er.
Bah, exactly what I hoped to avoid but I guess I can't complain. Looks like this is the Jap part of the butchers bill.

Ground Combat

I change tactics and press through multiple attacks against Kalemyo; looks like we manage to get in enough
supplies to make it worthwhile. Today enemy losses were nearly as high as ours but included huge numbers of destroyed squads indicating that we've now broken one or two
major LCU's. Andy has airlifted AA units in, obviously our air strikes has an effect.

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 70541 troops, 754 guns, 1038 vehicles, Assault Value = 2721

Well, subs have done me more good than bad...but I guess it's payback time for Allies later on in the war!

Summaries

Our air losses today were very heavy as 70 ac went down with the Kaga; lost pilot screens indicate that many pilots were saved.
I paid a stiff prize to release the destroyed air groups including a small TBD from Junyo that was transferred last turn.

The good thing is that enemy losses were heavier as 3 carriers sank!
83 SBDs, 37 Albacores, 30 Wildcats, 22 Avengers and 14 Sea Hurries.

We also have confirmed sinkings of 2 heavy cruisers, 1 CLAA, 2 destroyers and a batch of smaller craft.

CV Wasp, Torpedo hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
CV Indomitable, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
CV Hornet, and is sunk

CA Pensacola, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
CA Portland, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
CA Chicago, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires
CA Salt Lake City, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

Poor Kaga, but that could hardly be expected.  I think she was worth the price.  Good luck for tomorrow's strikes!  Any idea where Big E went?

Andy said that he had received Intel that the KB had returned to the Marshalls and assumed it was low on fuel.
- Since we built strong logistical base at Christmas Island and had a sturdy fuel train we could in fact remain in theater and by hiding south of the Line Islands with no active air operations avoided being detected by the enemy.

Big E went back home to PH and avoided a last salvo of torps...

Have run the combat turn; massive surface and air actions as we take on the remains of the fleeing enemy fleets and challenge Corsairs over Johnston Island.
Will need some time to complete the turn and update the AAR [:'(]

Here's a little teaser!

Naval Battles - Palmyra recaptured!!!

Post by PzB74 »

Thx [:)] Yep, her certainly did - not sure he planned it though!

Another one of those turns that take hours to run and complete!
All this an AARs has been a continous rush today, feeling the strains of war now - need more beers [8D]

Ok this post will cover all sea and surface engagements for this turn.

In the surface battles we first encounter PT boats and some sub chasers: All are dispatched without friendly casualties:

PT-157, Shell hits 9, and is sunk
PT-163, Shell hits 2, and is sunk
PT-165, Shell hits 4, and is sunk
SC-738, Shell hits 6, and is sunk
SC-739, Shell hits 5, and is sunk
SC-743, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
SC-744, Shell hits 5, and is sunk
SC-751, Shell hits 3, and is sunk

We then finish of 2 damaged heavy cruisers:

CA Chicago, Shell hits 13, and is sunk
CA Pensacola, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

In heavy running battles we sink the damage Indian and 3 escorting destroyers; The Indiana was a wounded bear and but 2 16" shells into the CA Maya which severly damaged her and she
was later on finished off by a sub.

BB Indiana, Shell hits 30, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
DD Barton, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Sub ASW Attacks

A sub torpedoes the Agano; but not worse than the ship can keep up with the TF and fight on!
Need to RTB to fix battle damages later on though. Grenadier receives a direct DC hit in return.

The bugger boat Sunfish torpedoes a destroyer, she hasn't sunk yet but I'm not sure she'll make it.
The Maya, heavily damaged after surface action is also finished of by a sub south of Johnston Island.
A loaded fleet(medium type) oiler is yet another sub victim, goes down in flames.

RE: Naval Battles - Palmyra recaptured!!!

Post by PzB74 »

Well, Palmya is back in our hands, the enemy has been eliminated or chased from the Central Pacific.
The battle is coming to an end..a few more engagements may remain but it's time to orchestrate a withdrawal of most Combined Fleet units and
decide how to defend the Line Islands for the rest of 1943!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Mar 24, 43

Air Combat

In heavy air battles today we loose 68 but destroy 121 enemy ac!
Most importantly, 25 Corsairs, 41 Wildcats and 35 Swordfish, 5 P-38s and 6 SBDs.
50 of our losses are Zero's.

Our heavy sweeps of Palmyra is a good thing; we loose some fighters but manage to get control of the airspace and wipe out
quite a number of enemy Corsairs, P-38s and Wildcats.

The only hit on a surface ship is a 500kb bomb hit on a heavily damaged CLAA.

Ca 40 Swordfish attacked the KB and surface groups today; all but a few were shot down in a massacre.
Not a single hit was scored by enemy ac.

Again we bomb Kalemyo heavily but poor weather makes the raids ineffective.

The Sunfish must go! You need a special ASW unit whose only task is to hunt down and kill the Sunfish.[:D]

PzB I want to congratulate you on your victory, nicely done!
I have a question - did you set the same altitude for all your planes on CV? Report says the following:

Raid detected at 120 NM, estimated altitude 24,000 feet.
Raid detected at 120 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.

If your DBs really came at those altitudes they would have used level and glide bombing instead of dive and that would explain quite bad hit rate you got.

Yeah, think we rattles the Sunfish quite badly but would love to end its woes once and for all [&o]

Thx Djordje, all SBDs were set to 15k feet, did set a few to 19 and 10k feet to make it more difficult for enemy CAP but nothing higher.
This was earlier in the battle, later on I changed all bombers to 15k feet to better coordinate the strikes.

Isn't it a nice sight; we rule the Central Pacific all the way up to Hawaii in late March 43! [8D]
Next turn I've ordered destroyers to sweep Johnston Island, then 4 battleships and cruisers from the KB will bombard the place, a final attempt to cause mayhem.
