Is there a way to stop bonsai attacks

several times I have had one or two units do bonsai attack against large forces when they're the first troops ashore.
Even though there are 10 times more troops still coming short. Also, I've had reinforcements commit bonsai charges
when their reinforcing large Japanese forces that are using bombardment. I think the game should allow us to prevent
the futile attacks of history in the game. I played the game to try and avoid the mistakes of the Japanese. Otherwise
there's not much point in planning the Japanese side, if we're going to be forced into making all the same mistakes.

If you want a serious reply to your question then you'll have to make a lot more sense then this. Perhaps upload a screenshot of the game situation so we can help you clarify it?

Sounds like you are trying to assault an atoll with a couple of xAKs and expect miracles but really can't be sure... What is the date in game? Which scenario...

So you want to play the Japanese as long as you can make all your little electron soldiers behave like "westerners". Japanese junior officers seem to have "mastered" many skills not trained for in western military academies...like assassinating the prime minister and launching coups. Some resemblance to the society that existed in Japan in 1940 or so seems appropriate for a historical game.

I might add that historically the IJ never showed any great aptitude for a contested amphibious assault. The US took quite a while to work the bugs out of that doctrine.

I can't say I lie awake at night worrying about small trees attacking me. However, in answer to the question I think you were asking, the last step of land combat is to figure out if the situation is hopeless for the defending troops. That is they can't retreat, out of supply, no hope left, etc. Then one of several things happen. Allied troops might surrender, either side might be "wiped out by attrition", or the Japanese might do a banzai attack. They go through a couple of phases of land combat until they are essentially wiped out.

If they didn't do a banzai, they would have been wiped out by attrition instead.

This is not a bug.  It is working in accordance with s.8.4.2.2.1 of the manual.

Well, if the soldiers are well camouflaged, and keep low, then a banzai charge transforms into a bonsai charge.

Except for the yelling. They would have to be vewy vewy quiet.

I got to admit I enjoy the quirky sense of humor, okay I'll write it off as a bug?

Not a bug. If you don't succeed in getting a big enough and well enough supplied reinforcement contingent in place all at once, it will suffer piecemeal destruction. The answer is to get a strong enough force in place quickly enough.

Is he really experiencing "Banzai" attacks, as in the desperate last throes of a surrounded force, or is he perhaps experiencing mandatory shock attacks without understanding why they are triggered and confusing them with Banzai attacks?

What he seems to be describing are mandatory shock attacks.

Atoll invasions trigger an automatic shock attack. If you fail to take it with the initial wave, each subsequent reinforcement triggers another shock attack.

River crossings trigger automatic shock attacks, even bringing reinforcements across trigger new shock attacks except when you have a certain ratio of defenders to attackers already in the hex.

Alfred can explain the complex formula far better than I.

This rule applies to BOTH sides, so it isn't an affliction partial to the Japanese if this is the type of Banzai attacks you are referring to.

I'm still trying to come to grips with a mental image of a bunch of sculpted trees rushing across the sands of an Atoll [:D]
