He posted the same question elsewhere. I told him to make one more post to hit the 10 needed before he can post a screenshot.

I think it's supposed to be an * not a w, as to what it means, I too would like to know.

It means that 62nd Infantry Group is a sub-unit of 42nd Infantry Division. Clock "Unit Organization of 42nd Infantry Division" to see whereabouts of other sub-units.

As others have said *-symbol indicates that unit is a sub-unit of larger formation and can be recombined with other sub-units to form 42nd Inf Div.

Just to add a little to this thread here is the 42nd Division structure.
Notice that the other components of the division don't arrive for almost 2 years.
Also keep in mind if you create a division from its parts you do not get the ability to then break it back into the separate components although you can split a full division into three equal sections with each section containing parts of the components.

I spent way too much time looking for a "w".

I usually play the Allies, but I have noticed that if you do not recombine Japanese subunits, you retain several Recon Regts that use tank movement rate, which you can use along Jap tank regts (both have the same movement rate). If you combine subunits into divisions, and then split the divisions, you only get three infantry regts (A/B/C) which use inf movement rate, thus losing the fast-moving recon rgt.
