Changing Ranges for Units

Post by seanny »

What files do I need to look at in order to change Ranges for different Units?
And do I need a program to edit these values?

I wanted to add range to Artillery Units in particular ;and maybe to Infantry and Tank Units as well.

I thought if I added some extra range to all units then I could have a homebrewed Game that is more like Panzer leader Board Game for example.

Edit,
If you wish to try out my Extended Ranges,

Download-
NEW Version 3 ,now with increased Infantry spotting range to 5 hexes

I have the Steam Panzer Corps Gold Edition in case that is significant.

I had a quick look at the files in the main folder and it is all unknown to me as to which files do what.
(I did have a quick look at the Graphics/Units folder and changed some pictures there but that is a side issue. I created a few Board Wargaming Counters to base some infantry Units on and that has worked out well.)

But my question here is how to increase Unit Ranges.

I found this thread,
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 5&t=208395

And with a slight initial hiccup I do seem to have successfully changed the range in game for my 1st unit.
I gave the Wehrmacht 43 inf a range of 2 ,which is correct to my Panzer Leader Board Game idea.
It does work in game.
I will experiment with some other units as well.

I have changed all the basic Infantry Types to a range of 2.
This includes Infantry and Infantry Heavy Weapons.
At present I have left all the other Units alone ,as in Tanks can still only fire 1 hex and Arty fires I assume 3 hexes.
This does change the game a lot.
The AI in particular seems really keen about the change ,was not sure about this until I tried.
Only playing the Italy Scenario at the moment.
But I really like the new tactics of having increased Infantry Range and I think it visually enhances the game ,giving a separation for fire of 2 hexes between the firing muzzleblast and the intended targets area of effect explosion.

I am still thinking about how I will modify Tank and Art Ranges , one consideration is the Map Terrain and the fact that I don't think LOS is handled by the game. So if I give my Tanks a long range it could look weird if for example they fire through a hill/mountain onto a target at extended range. For Arty this is not an issue theoretically since Arty can fire indirectly. Maybe I will limit Tanks to a range of 3 and Art a bit more perhaps 4 to 8 maybe. At present I have not done this though.

I think the Infantry Extended range alone is a good change. One rationale is the fact Infantry have Light Mortars and Light Machine Guns and also they can engage in hit and run tactics ,skirmishing and recce manoeuvres where they could have longer engagement ranges than tanks for example. It is WW2 after all. I don't think Tank Engagement Ranges were that long in practice anyway -could be wrong.

H TANKS 3

I thought I might draw attention to a Board Game Counters Mod I created ,
May be of some interest ,
It is pretty minimal but works well with my Extended Ranges ,I think at least.

I normally have Fog Of War active when I play against the AI.

In playtesting I have noticed I am having trouble sometimes Spotting the enemy in order to effectively use the Extended Range of my Artillery.

In contrast the AI does not seem to suffer from this problem.

I think I need to adjust Spotting Distances as well.
I will only do this for Infantry since I do like the surprise Fog of War can provide and realistically buttoned up or even open topped AFVs would not spot the enemy that easily at Distance.

Yet to come up with a new download ,thinking of making common Infantry Spotting Distance of 5 instead of 2.
Will only change Infantry Spotting Distances.

There is a new Download in 1st post ,with this change.

Shouldn't recon units get their spotting range increased as well? And airplanes?

I just noticed your post.
Valid point.

I have not played this game in quite a while.
Been playing other similar games ,mostly Hex of Steel.

However I will get back to this game.
Perhaps not straight away.

I have linked the Editor I used in one of my earlier posts.
You could use my file as a start and edit more if you wish.

Recon units can move multiple times in the same turn.
