Playing pirates

Never played them so been reading up and found a guide from 2016 written by NephilimNexus which mostly makes sense except for Defence Bases.

It says ...

'You can build cheap defence platforms over independent worlds and I highly suggest doing exactly that. First, it lets you take any defence mission contracts that they post completely risk free. Second, it usually keeps empires from colonizing it (however in large games AI colony ships will magically slip past when you're not looking). Third, it keeps rival pirates from screwing with it. You can also build cheap defence platforms over empire homeworlds and I suggest doing that even more. Once you've destroyed their homeworld spaceport you should immediately send your construction ship there (with escort) and build a defence base on top of it. Doing this will effectively take that empire out of the game entirely. From that point forward any time they try to build a space port or construction ship, it won't get past the first build cycle before your defence base blows it away.'

It makes sense but the problem is I cannot build a defence base at the planet, the only option I have is to build a space port? I can build one in space but as that would not move with the planet it's pointless.

Could someone clarify please?

It would appear not. [;)]
Sorry I can't help you. I've never played them - never really wanted to. I spend most of my time fighting them off.

Thanks, my first time as well. Harder than it looks, although you have the advantage over civs you don't over other priates and they seem to have bigger ships, probably found them.

When playing as pirates, to build anything not normally allowed, you need to use the "queue next mission" menu. This requires the selected constructor to have a mission, and it's trivial to trick the game-logic.

Pause the game, select your constructor.
It it's idle, click on the "Stop" command in the bottom left corner of the screen, or press S. This will give the selected ship a "Hold at [itself]" mission, lasting only a second, but the game is paused so it's fine.
If it's already doing something (a mission is displayed, e.g. "move to" or "refuel"), then you don't need to stop it.
Go to wherever you want to build whatever, and with the constructor selected, Ctrl + Right Click on your target, "Queue next mission" -> "Build at" -> and select whatever you want to build from a list of your station designs, irrelevant of normal restrictions.

Want to lockdown independent colonies and defend them against other pirates? Defensive base! Even on empire-owned planets!
Want to build a research station on that juicy +30% bonus, but pirates aren't allowed to? Guess what, now you can! (Not that you really need research bonuses after you've set up enough pirate fortresses.)

Another question.

If I have a pirate base on a planet do you continue to raid it? Seem to me the answer is yes as you get money with both but raids also produce resources and research stuff.

You certainly can continue raiding.
However consider that any ongoing combat on a planet where you own a pirate building also has a chance to destroy them. Including your own raids. The longer the fight, the higher the chance.
Once I have set up a base and a fortress, I don't raid that planet anymore, raids aren't worth enough to waste money in rebuilding those expensive pirate buildings.
